My Thoughts

A play overloaded with ideas - about religion, identity, family and the media. It feels overloaded as it often doesn’t nail the subjects it tries to tackle. It feels long and overwritten in parts and in other parts sharp and funny. It’s brutality is commendable as it examines a truly compelling fictional situation in a very real wider context. The ending is also very good.

Although some individual scenes are clever and often funny, this play is pretty much a mess - way too long, too many ill-defined characters, often difficult to figure out exactly what is transpiring, the Irish-isms don't always translate, and when you have to rely on video for your final scenes - well, that kind of defeats the whole purpose of it being on stage now, doesn't it?

It's vivacious. And at times, funny (fuckin' dervish with haemorrhoids), although sometimes the laughs are easy. I think there is too much going on and it isn't entirely clear what is happening and why. It's a shame I missed it when it was done in Belfast. I would love to see how it was staged.
