About the author

Leena Katriina Lehtolainen is a Finnish crime novelist, best known for her series of novels about the policewoman Maria Kallio.

Lehtolainen was born in Vesanto, Northern Savonia. Her first novel was released when she was only 12 years old. She studied literature in Helsinki until 1995 and wrote crime novels from 1993 on. Since about 2007 she has written other genres of books. Her works have been translated into various languages: Spanish, Dutch, Chinese, Lithuanian, Polish, French, Swedish, German, Estonian, Czech.

Brilliant, As Usual

I have so enjoyed all of Lehtolainen's books translated into English and am very sad at finishing the last one. Am hoping there are more to be translated soon!!! This last one was quite complex and brought the narrative of the first two to a nail biting climax. And speaking of nails, what is up with the Finnish habit (according to these books) of bodily wounds during passionate encounters...biting, scratching and battering bruises all over the body including legs??? These women take no prisoners leaving with rough (on the men) marks to show for it. 😱. I appreciate the glimpses into Finnish culture, especially the breads, and plan to try to make some tho not the Black Bread that requires a number of days, blankets, plastic bags, coffee, and a precise sense of timing. Do check out the recipe online for a dramatic read of the process!! Great reads, all of them!

No, this one is pretty sloppy -- the plot is all over the place, without much drive underlying anything, and a lot of extraneous "romance" rather than bodyguarding. It would have deserved a strict external editor, but above all a far stricter self-editing critique all the way along with its writing. I can see why the fourth in this mini-series has yet to be translated into English.

I really like this book because Leena made everything in the previous books come to a conclusion in this book. But we meet Vanamo, who is Hilja's half-sister and we meet Deividas who is David's son.
Yuri recommends Hilja to Usko Syrjänen to bodyguard his fiance Julia Gerbolt. Not telling her that Ivan Gezolian is her father. It all goes back to when David bombed Syrjänen's boat with four men aboard and the isotope of uranium. Long story short it works out. You have to read it to find out what happens.

Leena Lehtolainen is most famous for her Maria Kallio series which presents the Finnish police woman with a family. The Bodyguard trilogy presents another strong female character Hilja Ilveskero who is absolutely fabulous!!! Great entertaining crime fiction with humour!

I liked this third part of the trilogy very much, especially the half crazy main character. One thing I didn't like: the easy way Lehtolainen got rid of the main villains!!!

Oon kasvanut pieneksi Hilja-faniksi. Lehtolainen onnistuu jotenkin kiinnyttämään lukijan henkilöhahmoihinsa. Tää oli aika perinteistä Lehtolaista, täydellistä viihdykettä kylmiin syysiltoihin.

I'm sorry I can't give this book more than 3 stars, as it's very well written: characters, places, etc.
However, it's the third installment in "The Bodyguard Trilogy", and it keeps referring to events and people that have appeared/happened in the first two books.

Some books you can read as stand alones, independently of the others, but this one is almost impossible to understand without reading the first 2 books. I really wish someone had bothered to let readers know this.

Olin pettynyt tähän kirjaan. Ainakin dekkariksi se oli tylsin, jonka olen lukenut. Sarjan kolmannen kirjan kohdalla tajusin, että yksi syy, miksi tykkään tästä sarjasta, on paradoksaalisesti se, ettei tää oo liian jännittävä. Mukava lukea jotain turvallisen hyvää dekkaria, jossa hahmot on tuttuja ja jossa on sopivasti romantiikkaakin - ja jonka malttaa jättää yöunien ajaksi kesken. Sopivaa ohjelmaa siis arkiviikoillekin, kun on tehtävä muutakin lukemisen lisäksi.

Leena Lehtolaisen teksti vie mukanaan, mutta jostain syystä Hilja Ilveskero ei ole hahmona niin mielenkiintoinen ja uskottava kuin Maria Kallio. Henkivartija trilogia ei valitettavasti yllä samaan kuin Maria Kallio - dekkarit.

Menihän se tämäkin Henkivartijafinaali. Enemmän pidin kuin siitä edellisestä, joka mielestäni oli vähän sekava.

Jos minun kuitenkin pitäisi panna nämä Ilveskerokirjat mieltymysjärjestykseen, niin ensimmäinen olisi ykkönen, tämä viimeinen kakkonen ja keskimmäinen sitten se viimeinen.

Hilja oli kyllä ihan virkistävä tyyppi, Reiskasta nyt puhumattakaan. Ja itse asiassa pidin kyllä Juristakin. Ja Laitiosta. Ja... no olkoon, aika monta mielenkiintoista tyyppiähän sinä oli.

Tarina vain oli vähän hatara, Maria Kallio -kirjat ovat kyllä olleet enemmän mieleeni. Näissä oli niin kovin paljon juonenlankoja ja niiden kaikkien kunnialla loppunsaattaminen näytti olevan työlästä.

Toivottavasti Lehtolainen nyt kuitenkin palaa Maria Kallion pariin.

Taattu Lehtolainen kuten sarjan aikaisemmatkin osat. Ehkä hitusen hitaampi paikoitellen, mutta piti otteessaan. Kuuntelin tämän kirjan, ja se sopi hyvin siihen tarkoitukseen. Tarina on taitavasti punottu ja uskottavasti kerrottu. Pääosan nainen on sopivan vahva ja itsenäinen. Olen nauttinut näistä kolmesta kirjasta paljon, enkä yhtään vähemmän sen vuoksi, että ensimmäinen osa, Henkivartija, löytyi vahingossa reissussa matkalukemiseksi toiselle. Kirjan loppuessa olo on kuitenkin seesteinen, tähän on hyvä lopettaa.

Yllättäen hieman parempi kuin sarjan kaksi aiempaa osaa, tosin ei missään nimessä yllä Maria Kallio -kirjojen tasolle. Loppuratkaisu vähän hölmö ja hätäinen; ensin pohjustetaan melkein kolmen kirjan verran ja lopulta viimeiset kymmenen sivua ovatkin sitten sellainen antikliimaksi kaikelle, että melkein hävettää. Ihan kuin Lehtolaisella ei olisi ollut harmainta aavistusta, miten päättää trilogia ja kuinka pistää päätökseen massiivisten tapahtumien ketju.

Tämän kirjan takia tunsin jo omantunnon tuskia. En meinannut millään päästä tähän kiinni ja ensimmäiset sata sivua mietin, olenko näin ajautunut pois Lehtolaisen maailmasta. Ehdin syyttää jo nuortenkirjoja, fantasiapainotteista lukemista ym.

Kunnes kirja nappasi mukaan. Tuli niitä juttuja, joita haluan eli kylmien aseiden lisäksi tunnetta ja muistoja.

Mutta sillen en mitään voi, että tämä genre on mulle vähän vaikee. Melkein tässä pysyin koko ajan mukana. Melkein.

Jetzt hat sich die Geschichte - im dritten Band - aber schon ein wenig gezogen. Das Setting, dass Hilja mitten in der werten kriminellen Gesellschaft herumhüpft, greift halt nicht auf Dauer, obwohl es eine Zeitlang seinen Reiz hatte, weil dadurch auch die "Bösen" ein alltägliches Gesicht bekamen. Aber das ist halt der Spannung nicht besonders zuträglich.
Die Standpauken vom alten Lehrer hätte ich mir auch sparen können.

Trilogian 1. osa oli koukuttavin, mutta kokonaisuudessaankin tämä oli mainio kokonaisuus. Hilja Ilveskero naishenkivartijana kansainvälisissä rikoskoukeroissa oli kokonainen, lihallinen hahmo. Käänteet menivät totuttua lehtolaista överimmäksi, mutta muutoin tuttu, helppolukuisuus, jossa käsitellään myös yhteiskunnallisia asioita, oli läsnä. Äänikirjana mainio kaamosajan kumppani.

You'll like this if you enjoy Scandanavian noir with female protaganists. Hilja is an interesting and very complex character. I had not read the first two books and think I might have appreciated this more if I had but it still was a well written interesting novel. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.

Overall this was a good book. While I am not a fan of first person narratives, I thought this one was done as well as it can be. We saw the story entirely from the perspective of the main character and knew what she knew with nothing held back. This trilogy has an advantage over the author's Maria Kallio series in that it was written fairly recently rather than more than 20 years ago.

I have now finished this trilogy and the Maria Pallid series. Being Finn I was familiar with many of the names. Both central characters are truly memorable and their stories unput-downable. I wait for the next story this author writes. Both lead women are strong and willing to get to the truth. These books get 5 stars on all points! Enjoy them!
