After seeing the film I knew I just had to learn and read more of this wisecrack. This collection was perfect in giving me the overarching story of the merc with the mouth. I laughed a hell of a lot and I'll definitely be reading more Deadpool!
This collections attempts to make a in-depth Deadpool introspective with a wraparound story that connects Deadpool roots with one of his more recent time-traveling romps, but it ultimately fails. The old Deadpool comics, while an interesting curio, don't provide almost any information of Deadpool origins, and most of the newer comics just plain suck.
There are much, much better Deadpool comics out there, go read those.
I think 'The Definitive Deadpool' proved that I love Deadpool as a character, but not so much his story. He is genuinely funny - making jokes in all the wrong places and breaking the fourth wall - but I think that's the novelty of his character. The actual story lines didn't impress me much, sometimes not making much sense without context or just generally not engaging. Saying that, the four part Weapon X story line was absolutely fantastic, and Deadpool's relationship with Death was a complete surprise (I would love to see that in the movies). There was enough in 'The Definitive Deadpool' to save this from a 2 star rating, but I honestly didn't enjoy it as much as expected.
A lot better than the previous Marvel Platinum collection I read. This time around, there are only a couple of plots that are left hanging and one where we jump straight into the last part of a longer story. Overall, this is an excellent briefer into the character of Deadpool, showing off his character and some of the main events during his career. Art quality is very good throughout and the writing is satisfyingly tight.
