What They Didn't Teach You in Photo School: What you actually need to know to succeed in the industry

Rate this book

This book won't tell you how to take photographs. It will, though, teach you a much more difficult set of skills: how to be a photographer.

Passing on hard-earned lessons from a successful career in commercial, editorial and lifestyle photography, Demetrius Fordham shows how to snag the best internships and assistant roles, impress at an interview, develop an amazing portfolio, forge strong relationships with clients, and lay the foundations of your own successful career.

Illustrated throughout with Demetrius' own duotone photography, dramatically typeset to appeal to visual thinkers, and presented in an appealing handbook format, this is the book that will launch the careers of the next generation of photographers.

I always argue that there's things you know, things you don't know, and things you don't know that you don't know. This book is a fantastic read for photographers at any level. From how to brand yourself, look for clients, to basic resources with information on pricing and portfolio critiquing, it's a good book to go through. Admittedly, a few things are dated (questioning the use of instagram and pinterest, for instance). But otherwise, I'd recommend it to any photographer. Especially one starting out or one who needs to brush up on some basic knowledge in the field or how to present/market themselves in this industry.

Pretty valuable life advice for passionate photographers. I recommend it for a better understanding of this world which is built of way much more than passion and talent.

A practical and current collection of recommendations which should be useful for any novice. Lots of common sense issues but nothing in great depth.
