Robotech, was an old cartoon show from the 80's. It combined three different japanese tv shows(Macross, Southern Cross & Gensis climber mospeada), into one, creating a space opera that spanned generations.

For those of us who grew up in the 80's, robotech was different than other shows. It had a number of complex themes. Characters you loved died. The main characters fell in love, broke up, suffered loss and despair. Those feelings carried over to other episodes, they didn't just return to the status quo.The villians weren't black and white, sometimes they became allies. If you missed an episode, you were missing part of the story.

Robotech Art 1 is a lovesong to the TV show. It's full of images of animation cels from the show, summaries to all the episodes, character bios and development sheets, as well as a history of the program, and japanese animation in general. My copy is tattered, and practically destroyed from use (that's what happens when you're a kid, and you love a book so much it goes everywhere with you). It filled in the episodes my mother had forgot to tape for me, taught me to draw, and interested me in Japanese animation.

I can't say that it would have much value to a casual reader, or even today's anime fans. Many find Carl Macek's treatment of the original material repugnant. If, however, you enjoyed the show, the book is worth hunting down-it's quite marvelous.
