I believe in Dan Ames..a good writer...but this book is not the quality of the first three. I felt it was not as smoothly put together. I enjoyed the story line, but it jumped around and I was finding it a bit difficult to follow the investigator's reasoning as to how he could link the two killings. Still, I can't wait to continue to enjoy Dan Ames' works!
Detective makes fast work in solving two murders in upscale Grosse Pointe. Fast-Paced a d perceptive introspection uncovers motive. Close families in familiar neighborhoods.
Nick an impulse buy to buy a boat, without knowing how to even sail one. With friends from his work, and feeling the fresh breeze, knew that he wanted more times like this. Getting out of the medical world and the endless race of making more money. Bullet came, causing him to go overboard and ended his life. John is pulled in by this being his wife’s brother, and his sister is .Chief of Police. Good flowing plot, intriguing, and love the remarks between Ellen and John. Love this series as well as all of his books.
Murder always seems to happen close to home for P.I. John Rockne. His brother in law, a prominent doctor is murdered while sailing in his boat. A sniper. The good doctor has no known enemies. Sometimes your enemies ar we very close to home. Another classic whodunnit. This is an excellent murder mystery.
I enjoy reading these short mysteries, not only because they are well-written and easy reading, but primarily because I lived in Grosse Pointe and I like all the references to places there. Most would rate these 3 Stars.
I'd actually give this 3 1/2 stars. I like the John Rockne series. The main character is unique and funny for a private investigator. The murder in this plot hits close to home, so I thought this story could have been fleshed out more. Seemed too short and abrupt to me.
My husband read this, not me. He's the mystery guy. He says it was pretty good, fast, and easy read. The location were all familiar to him which he liked.
Another captivating novel in the series, which keeps you guessing right to the very end. Sharp writing with humour, sarcasm thrown in for good measure.
This is a mystery so it really isn’t my cup of tea. It took me a number of days to finish, since I didn’t care who done it, and I just wasn’t that into it. 3
Again, one I found pretty good, I weighed out between a 3 and 4 here, but ultimately had to decide on a 3. The book has a case involving John's family, and therefore, he's more emotionally invested, but there really wasn't enough of a book here for that sense of investment to play out for the reader. While the "Whodunit" vibe is lavished all over this book; there isn't enough from the other character's to make you really care about the culmination of the plot, and the end of the story.
The more interesting aspect was the one given the least amount of attention: John likely has a new nemesis in the series. We'll see where it goes, I hope, in the next book.
Overall, this was a decent read, but I felt like a lot of liberty's were taken to finish up it "quickly", and what could have been "great", considering all the emotional angles, plausible depth, and attached scenarios, settled on just being "Good." It kind of skimmed the surface with the main plot, and used a side-plot to bolster the lack of depth in the main plot. Hence: I had to knock it down a star.
Still like the series as a whole, and if/when the next book comes out, I'll still read it. I just hope the author puts more of an investment into the series and John's nemesis' than I've seen to date.
Another opportunity to catch up with private investigator John Rockne. Wise-cracking P.I.s normally wear on me, but the author has found a nice balance between serious and humorous.
