Robotech - The Macross Saga

Robotech: The Macross Saga - Volume 1

Rate this book
Robotech stands as one of the premiere animated sci-fi series of the 1980s, one that helped usher in a new era of cartoons in which drama, romance and character development were as important as action. This volume collects the first six issues of Comico's initial Robotech series as well as supplemental bonus material in a 176-page trade paperback. Written by Carl Macek and Jack Herman, with art by fan-favorite Dave Johnson, Neil Vokes, Mike Leeke, Reggie Byers, Chris Kalnick and Jeff Dee, and featuring a cover of original series production art, this is the first of six volumes that will reprint the entire Comico run, which itself was an adaptation of the Robotech television series. This story begins as an alien spacecraft — the SDF-1 — crash-lands on Earth, creating a global impact that leaves humanity waiting for the aliens to return. As mankind prepares to defend itself from an impending invasion and rebuild the SDF-1, the story of Rick Hunter, Lin Minmei, Roy Fokker and others unfolds.

THIS STORY HAS EVERYTHING!!!
(channeling Stefon from SNL's Weekend Update)
Macross city's hottest comic is "VOLTRANZORDAM!!!" (Voltron, Transformers, Power Rangers, Gundam)
You know, that thing where a child pilotting an F-14 that transforms into space robot, and then he fights family-sized green and blue aliens in a Godzilla-esque cityscape while his girlfriend competes in a talent show?
This book's got it all: giant doors, space tuna, reverse Hitler-mustaches!

Disclaimer: I grew up on this show so all of my opinions here are incredibly biased.
If you haven't watched Robotech (and enjoyed it) I cannot recommend this book to you. This is not high art. This is a soap opera with laser, robots and giant aliens for hard core nerds only.

Now, back to my heavily biased opinion:

If you missed the excitement of the Robotech Macross TV show in the early 80's, with its soundtrack clearly ripped off from Superman and/or Star Wars, do not fret. While it's available on DVD and to a few streaming services, it's also available in paperback. And unlike many graphically adaptated screenplays, this printed version doesn't deviate one inch (a few millimeters maybe, but not a whole inch).

Before starting this, jaded by many comic book disappointments, I assumed this comic version wouldn't live up to the show or that it'd be slow and I'd just have to slog it out. Not the case at all. I found it very difficult to put down. It was just as good as the cartoon in every aspect. The fast paced variety, humor, drama, romance.
I loved every page.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed all the sappy, cheesy, awesomeness of the original animated series.
A FAN-F@#$IN'-TASTIC READ!!!
