The good keeps going better and better

A LONG JOURNEY

In the second book, the Super Dimensional Fortress One (SDF-1) and its crew had to integrate the entire population of Macross City, inside of the massive fortress.

Also, due the chaotic jump to Pluto, they lost the Fold System that it was in reality the "Protoculture Matrix", the very reason because the Zentraedi fleet is after them. But also, the loss of the mentioned piece of robotechnology forced the Engineering crew to do changes into the way of how the SDF-1 would battle from now on.

First, now if they want to use the main weapons, now they have to transform the SDF-1 into a gigantic colossus with a humanoid-like shape, where the Navy destroyers attached to the fortress would be indeed now the "arms" for this new shape of the fortress. However, this new shape shouldn't be called lightly since each time that they have to transform the SDF-1, a real mayhem would occur in the area of the "new" Macross City inside the fortress.

Second, after the dissapearing of the Fold System (aka Protoculture Matrix), an unusual phenomenon remain in the form of a field of energy particles that now the Engineering crew would canalize to creat a "Pin-point shield", a kind of force field but only able to create three mobile energy circles that they would be coordinated from the Bridge to move them during an attack to a expected zone to be hit, but of course while effective when the "Pin-point shields" be right on time, any mistake or lack of speed to move those three fields would mean that some zone could be exposed to be hit without the defense of the mobile shields.

During this past year, Rick Hunter as been promoted to Lieutenant and now he has his own small team to lead. The Vermillion Team with the responsibility of leading two rookie pilots.

In a long journey of a year across the Solar System, the Robotech Defense Force (RDF) crew aboard of the SDF-1 faced threats and dangers by the Zentraedi fleet, mainly in the areas of Saturn and Mars.

Now, they finally returned to Earth but...

UNWELCOMED IN THEIR OWN HOME

The SDF-1 is finally back to Earth but now they aren't welcomed anymore!

Now, the UEG (United Earth Government) is looking at the SDF-1's presence as a danger to Earth since the Zentraedi fleet dissapeared along with the SDF-1, a year ago, keeping the planet from harm.

So, the UEG's command staff is ordering Captain Gloval to leave Earth at once to keep the world out of the "war zone".

However, these orders not only are dissapointing to these heroes making them as "unwelcomed aliens" in their own world, but also is problematic since they need supplies and with need to do repairs. The crew is exhausted and many of them want to visit their relatives and loved ones that remained on Earth during all this year.

And of course, the Zentraedi fleet can reappear at any moment.

THE REMAINING INVITED TO THIS "WAR DANCE"

Maximillian (Max) Sterling

A rookie pilot who joined the RDF during the trip back. He is an odd fellow in the military, skinny and wearing glasses. However, while he is still a rookie, soon he is showing an uncanny dexterity to pilot Veritechs and dogfight skills which soon enough may be superior from Rick Hunter's and even from Roy Fokker's. He is assigned to Vermillion Team, the new group lead by Lt. Rick Hunter.

Ben Dixon

Another rookie pilot. He is tall, muscled, with an eternal smile on his face and a good heart on the chest. He is the other pilot assigned to the newly Vermillion Team lead by Lt. Rick Hunter.

Miriya Parina

She is a female Zentraedi and she is recognized as the finest warrior pilot in the entire Zentraedi Fleet. She is First Officer on the fleet under command of Commander Azonia, which is an only-female fleet (Zentraedi keep their warriors separated by sex genre in apart fleets). Also, Miriya is the field leader of the Quadrono Battalion, the main attack wing of Azonia's fleet.

While most of the male Zentraedi warriors use Battle Pods (mechas with a form of kinda of "big heads" with cannons and a couple of legs attached), the female Zentraedi warriors proved to be able to control the more complex Power Armors (humanoid-like shaped mecha).

The SDF-1 battles the Zentradi warrior race on their journey back to earth. While toxic human emotions infiltrate into the clone aliens, a mission to scout out enemy movements lands our human protagonists Lisa Hays and Vermillion Squadron leader Rick Hunter and his subordinates Max Sterling and Ben Dixon in enemy hands - literally - as the aliens median height reaches some 50 feet tall! Under questioning by the Zendradi leadership our heroes witness the destruction of a world by their combined armada of 4.8 million warships just to prove they can do it, outrageous alien disgust over the concept of human reproduction, and intense concern over an unknown power source called protoculture which may be what their attack on earth has been about since the beginning. The aliens want to capture the SDF-1 believing it to harbor some incredible science that the crew has yet to discover at least by the name they've given it. Our heroes escape and the SDF-1 breaks through the enemy lines to arrive at earth to the celebration of all on board, even the alien spies...

I got this book after it was abandoned in the lost & found in Junior High. I was already a Robotech fan, as that was one of my childhood cartoons, but this was such a new, weird angle. At the time the idea of a group of writers creating an unseen expanded canon was completely new to me, & these were confusing in the best way...& the Invid Flower of Life remains a MAJOR influence on me. --MK

By far the best of the novels so far! The spies show up!!! I love the spies. They are just perfect and awkward. And the SDF1 lands on Earth and discover all their fighting has been for a miltary government that doesn't care about them and said they were dead. Still confused as to why Lisa is falling in love with Rick. But loving the novels so much!

It's bee my fifth or sixth time reading it. I am thinking that the more I read it, the more I nit-pick it. Seeing that it is based off an American cartoon, that was adapted from an anime. It might not have had a great source material to work with. Still it's a quicker way to catch up with a beloved series, than watching the anime.

This is the point where the series really starts to pick up; the SDF-1 returns to Earth after a year or so in the outer solar system, only to find that all is not well on Earth. Action, explosions, heartbreak, dogfights and the only book I've ever read where FOD is even mentioned.

The writing is still not high art, but it has hit is stride and the issues earlier on have ironed themselves out a bit. Characters have blossomed a bit, and you truly get the sense that these are war-weary veterans.

Which leads me to an observation I had in regards to the differences between the Robotech continuity and the Macross continuity: Robotech is a story of the human race slowly being worn down; Macross is the story of humanity's rise. I'm not sure what bearing it has on anything, but it's interesting how different the two universes are, considering they sprang from the same seed.

Great series of books for kids that enjoy or are interested in science fiction. I read these books in middle school (I'm now in my 30s) and loved each one. The stories are fun, engaging and relatively fast paced. I'd be tempted to reread them now just for old time's sake if I didn't have so many new books on my to-read list.

I knocked it down a peg because, in retrospect, there are some aspects that are a bit too cheesy. I'm sure when my kids are old enough, they'll get thier own copies.

The drama picks up considerably in book 3 of the only known novelization of a cartoon series. The stakes are raised for all the players and our first of many tragic deaths happens. It all goes ugly from here on out, kids. But remember, you can't have despair without hope, and hate without love.

Godawful. Skip these adaptations, just watch the shows. Hard to believe Brian Daley was parially responsible for this tripe.
