This stirring book of photographs introduces the many wolves that have been given sanctuary at Wolf Haven International near Mount Rainer in southeast Washington State. Annie Marie Musselman was given the rare opportunity to photograph the wolves at the Wolf Haven sanctuary. These captive-born and displaced wolves came from a variety of captive environments. Some of the highly endangered Mexican and red wolf pups will be raised with the possibility of future release into the wild. Human contact is very limited, so the images captured by Musselman express a wild spirit that is very different from anything seen in domesticated animals. Brenda Peterson's text puts the stories of these wolves, and of wolves in North America, into context as she describes their behavior patterns and social structure. Wolf Haven uncovers new truths about wolves and the ways humans are finding to coexist with these wild animals.
Brenda Peterson is the author of over 20 books, including the recently released murder mystery, Stiletto. Her first memoir Build Me an Ark: A Life with Animals, chosen as a “Best Spiritual Book of 2001,” to three novels, one of which, Duck and Cover, was chosen by New York Times as a Notable Book of the Year. Her second memoir, a dark comedy of family and faith, is I Want To Be Left Behind: Finding Rapture Here on Earth; it was selected by The Christian Science Monitor among the Top Ten Best Non-Fiction Books and chosen by independent bookstores as an Indie Next and a Great Read. Her non-fiction has appeared in numerous national newspapers, journals, and magazines, including The New York Times, Chicago Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle, Seattle Times, Reader’s Digest, Christian Science Monitor, O: The Oprah Magazine, and Utne Reader. Loved reading about this wolf sanctuary on my door step. Not a lot of content but some lovely photos. Wish there had been more, but I respect the sanctuary putting the needs to the wolves first.
Beautiful photographs paired with essays about the history of wolves and of the history of Wolf Haven, a wolf sanctuary located in Tenino, Washington. Some of the essays tell of the work that Wolf Haven is doing to breed the endangered Mexican red wolves for release back into the wild, and other essays tell the history of some of the wolves and wolf-dogs that are living out their lives in the sanctuary and how they came to be there.
WOLF HAVEN: Sanctuary and the Future of Wolves in North America by Brenda Peterson tells you almost all you need to know about the book just by reading the title. First, the photographs. Beautiful, living illustrations of the endangered North American wolves including the Mexican Red wolves and other species. Each photo captures the bond between humans and wolf as well as displaying the gulf between us. The animals are magnificent, powerful creatures who look so much like our household friends it is easy to forget they are creatures of the wild, tolerating humans as long as the latter doesn't intrude too much. Some of the prose struck me as a bit too poetic for my taste, but not too saccharine so as to be intolerable. When speaking of the animals themselves, the wordage became far more palpable. Yet we are talking about a "romantic" being in so many ways that it wouldn't be right not to wax poetic about them to some degree. The book is in support of the Wolf Haven project and the reintroduction to wild territories of wolves and coyotes that have been hunted to near extinction. This is thanks to political control of the wild areas in America without the proper scientific voices being listened to. But slowly, the book assures us, wiser minds are beginning to see the light. I won this book through GoodReads.
An amazing look at wolves in sanctuary, how they got there, and why they are necessary. My only complaint about this book is I wish it had more info in it. A great read if you're like me and love all things wolf.
Overall, this book is very well done and would be palatable to a wide range of audience. The writing is clear and easy to follow without being overly scientific or poetic. This said, a few sentences are slightly embellished and a tad flowery. Most of the photos are truly gorgeous and appropriately captioned with only a few exceptions. Wolf Haven would serve as a great introduction to anyone looking to find out more regarding the story of endangered wolves in North America. Photography fans will also not be disappointed with this gem.
Partially funded by a Getty Images grant, Wolf Haven : Sanctuary and the Future of Wolves in North America's collaboration between photographer Annie Marie Musselman and writer Brenda Peterson yields an informative and striking book about the history and ongoing battle of North America's endangered wolves and offers readers a comprehensive introduction to Washington's Wolf Haven sanctuary. In addition to being a lovely coffee table photo book, scientific and political backstory are woven in to help readers understand the hot topics of the wolves endangerment and conservation efforts. Individual wolves from the sanctuary are also introduced, some with more troubled pasts than others.
I received this book as a Goodreads giveaway in exchange for an honest review. Thanks to the authors/publisher for participating in the giveaway.
I didn't realize this book was about the word Mexico. Call it Lobo, stop ramming MEXICO down my throat. What is Mexico doing for its wolves? Obama has to be pictured at the end...I knew it was not just me half way through, once Thelma & Louise was referenced. Beautiful pictures, but I credit that to the Wolves vs the skill of the photographer. I judged a book by its cover, lesson learned.
This moving essay about some of the wolves featured in a wolf sanctuary located near Seattle tells the sad stories of abuse that previously defined these wolves and wolf dogs' lives. Rare pictures of the wolves help to create a moving story.
Makes one proud to have this unique wolf sanctuary so close to home. We have always loved visiting Wolf Haven and this book explains so much about this wonderful endangered species.
Fascinating read and beautiful photos. Some great information about wolves and the sanctuary. I didn't know much about wolves until I read this book and now I'm captivated, wanting to know more.
