For two years, Captain Gloval and his crew had been chased through the solar system, only to be made to feel like unwanted relatives when they returned to Earth. Now, in direct violation of Council orders, Gloval commands the Super Dimensional Fortress to rise from its landing site in the Pacific . . .
Drama, action, romance, sci-fi… “Robotech” has it all!
OUTSIDERS ON THEIR OWN HOME
On the previous novel, The SDF-1’s crew thought that the worse was behind once they were able to return to Earth, after a desperate journey of one year travelling through the Solar System while facing several attacks by the Zentraedi army.
However, once on Earth, they realized that instead of being the ultimate hope to protect humankind, now they were unwanted outsiders on their own home.
The United Earth Government lied to the Earth’s population about the dissapearance of the SDF-1 a year ago. They invented the story of a human anti-UEG terrorist group assaulting Macross Island and the SDF-1 with nuclear dirty bombs. And then, you can bet that watching the return of SDF-1 was an embarrasment to the truthfulness of the UEG.
Only Toronto offered a safe haven to the SDF-1 and its crew, but sadly was a bloody messy mistake due a terrible attack by Zentraedi forces provoking an accidental overload on the defensive systems of the SDF-1 resulting in a massive destruction over the territory.
Then, the SDF-1 is ordered to leave the planet.
Besides the terrible losses of human lives on Earth, the SDF-1’s crew also suffered deaths on key members causing a deep grief on the close ones to the fallen heroes.
TOO CLOSE COMBAT
Now in this novel, they are in space again with the Zentraedi fleet ready to attack again, and this time the battle will be too close for comfort.
The “Daedalus Maneuver” conceived by Lt. Cmdr. Lisa Hayes has been a great addition to the combat repertoire by the SDF-1, however, Commander Breetai now is ready for it.
The “ram” effect of the “Daedalus Maneuver” now instead of destroying the battlewagon of Breetai, now is an unintended “bridge” leading the battle mecha of the Zentraedi into the SDF-1 and right in the middle of the civilian population of Macross City inside of the massive fortress.
Zentraedi Battlepods against RDF Veritechs, battling in too close quarters in the middle of the streets of the Macross City contained inside of the gigantic SDF-1.
Also, there will be another kind of “close combat” when the star fighter ace of the Zentraedi, Miriya Parino, would infiltrate the Macross City population with the deadly intention of killing the human ace, Max Sterling. However, this deadly match will have a totally unexpected outcome.
THE POWER OF LOVE
Commander Breetai had trapped months ago some RDF officers, and he along with his advisor, Exedore, they were in shocked when they watched Rick Hunter kiss Lisa Hayes (actually Lisa had to give Rick the military order of kissing her... I want to serve in an army like that!).
Breetai is convinced that humans have the secret of the “Protoculture”, the secret behind the power of the Robotech Masters.
So, Breetai sent three spies studying the Macross City population inside of the SDF-1, and they were successfully living there for months, however, instead of bringing key information to accomplish the defeat of the humans, they are bringing the seed of rebellion, the seed of love.
The Zentraedi is a genetically created race by the powerful Robotech Masters to be used as their point army to conquer and control their vast empire. The Zentraedi only know about war. They even have separate spaceships for their male and female warriors.
However, the spies discovered the most powerful “secret weapon” of the SDF-1...
...Lynn Minmei.
She is the winner of the Miss Macross beauty contest and now THE pop singer idol of the population, civilian and military, of the SDF-1.
And unknown to her, now she is the very reason of a massive inner rebellion in the ranks of Zentraedi fleet.
Many Zentraedi warrior never felt in their hearts such feelings before, even there were soldiers that they didn’t thought that they even have any hearts at all. Now, the songs of Minmei is “invading” the Zentraedi fleet with the most powerful force in the universe...
...LOVE.
Commanders Khyron and Azonia are focused to recover the Protoculture Matrix from the hands of the RDF, and with that being able to climb up in the chain of command of Dolza’s main fleet, surpassing the regional command of Breetai’s fleet.
However, Breetai and Exedore, will expose an unexpected proposal to Captain Gloval and the SDF-1’s crew.
This felt very short. Mostly it was the big battle with Kyron. But there was also really great parts with the cult of Minmei among the Zentradi and them wanting to join the SDF1, and lots more Mirya. More death and Minmei being a total selfish idiot. I discovered that these were written by two writers, one I loved and one I didn't. I like to see the one I loved having more to do with them. Lols
Episodes 19-23. The tone definitely shifts from the show. The book frames this time period as more lose after lose. Stalemates are seen as loses due to casualties. Dark tones which is better
Great series of books for kids that enjoy or are interested in science fiction. I read these books in middle school (I'm now in my 30s) and loved each one. The stories are fun, engaging and relatively fast paced. I'd be tempted to reread them now just for old time's sake if I didn't have so many new books on my to-read list.
I knocked it down a peg because, in retrospect, there are some aspects that are a bit too cheesy. I'm sure when my kids are old enough, they'll get thier own copies.
This book was interesting but not my favourites off all.But it took me longer to finish. My favourites of this series was the third book. This one was also exciting. It talks about the SDF1 returning to Earth and in Earth they have problems
At 130-someodd pages, this entry feels thin even by Robotech standards. That it often treads dramatic water and trades in tired tropes (alliteration!) doesn't help matters. It's a serviceable entry, but nothing more.
