"YOU ARE MINE, A GIFT FROM THE SEA"

The beautiful and pampered daughter of a powerful earl, Lady Elizabeth Sommersett is en route to an arranged marriage in the American Colonies when a storm sinks her ship. Washed up on the shores of paradise, she awakens to find herself in the powerful arms of a bronze-skinned stranger who claims the astonished Englishwoman as his own.

He is called Cain -- an Indian warrior, brave and magnificent in battle but gentle and tender in the ways of romance. It is he who frees Elizabeth's captive spirit -- as together they share an indomitable passion that will give them the strength to bear peril, imprisonment...and the cruel vengeance of an aristocracy determined to destroy their love.

The main heroine is a whiny, rude and ignorant girl-a classic for how noblewomen were raised back then. She's spoiled, and she's also very unlikable.

Then there's Cain. He's patient with her in a way I definitely wouldn't be. He teaches her cooking, he helps her figure out how to do things she otherwise wouldn't be allowed to do due to her being simply a female.

The two of them work out their differences. Cain attempts to get her to agree to marriage. The romance is a slow burn. But with her engaged to an earl, there's obviously problems ahead.

This by far is one of the best historical romance books that I’ve read in a while. Rich with detail, not to much hate between the characters, sometimes you are holding your breath through trying events, and the love between the hero/heroin is just phenomenal. When this book ended, I was kind of disappointed, I could of just kept on reading. Great book, great read, and leaves an imprint in your mind for days to come.

And so began my descent into the rabbit hole of romance novels. Bought this as an impulsive, teasing gift for a friend, and the intention was to read it as well, and I happily enjoyed it overall, far more than I have with some others I have happened to pick up.

A historical romance set between the North American colonies and England, Elizabeth Sommersett is a pampered lady of standing that is shipwrecked on the way to the colonies to wed her betrothed due to her sense of duty. She is saved by Shaakhan/Cain Dare, a descendent of Virginia Dare and member of the Lenni-Lenape. After the tragic loss of his family, his visions bespoke of a woman he would rescue from the sea that would be his. His bold declarations are supported only by patience and the highborn woman meets her match, both challenged to re-evaluate their beliefs and lifestyles, as the two reside together and grow closer until he honors her request to take her to her people. From there, prejudices surface from those of her world and tragedies continually try to separate the two, and through it all, she realizes her feelings and he does not stop from seeking to free them both from their respective enslavement until they succeed.

As for the dangers, my chief complaint would be the standard romance novel formula of many small story arcs of dangers that are here and gone fast and not necessarily related to one another. Unnecessary, however, there was a main story plot that was tied with the romance plot that gave some strength to the work. The supporting cast of characters were developed enough to add flavor to the story, but didn’t outshine the main characters.

The clash of culture and display of prejudices which slowly change as Shaakhan’s brazen handling of Elizabeth’s arrogance was humorous, but the devotion and love was more than evident from him in his quest to show her what love is and what marriage should be for. This was more of a heart melting pairing while the philosophical standpoint of prejudices being unable to stand up to the deep feelings one can have for another, it is a hopeful adventure amidst the dangers and setbacks. I was completely invested in these characters and loved watching them evolve and grow. Probably my favorite one out of the few romance novels I have read up until now.
