How would it feel if every day,
All the people ran away
If all they saw was a monster wild
When you were really meek and mild,
If you had not one single friend
With whom your leisure time to spend.
For Cyclops this could be his fate
As a monster men just love to hate....

Today We Did
Cyclops lives on a beautiful island which is invaded by evil pirates looking for a place to rest and relax. Frightened by the giant with one eye, the pirates decide to capture him and sell him to a traveling circus. He becomes a prisoner to be gawked at, prodded and tested by underhanded scientists.

Cyclops is an illustrated ballad, and is the first book in the Chronicles of Curious Creatures series. It is cleverly written with lyrical text; I got into quite a rhythm as I read. It described all the characters and locations well and with humour. I really liked that the evil pirate was called I.M. Mean!

The text was white on a black background, which I normally find more difficult to read, but it suited this story quite well. The size of the text also changed through the story, which just worked. There were lovely coloured illustrations throughout. I particularly like the way the villains are depicted in the pictures.

Cyclops is suitable for middle primary school students to lower high school students. It is a good story for sharing aloud too, I just love the way the story rolls off my tongue! More books in this series will be available soon!

One-eyed beasts, who have the strength to crush an army of thousands--well, not necessarily. This lovely book introduces cyclops in a beautiful ballad style tale which will have kids wanting to read it again and again.

This is the first in a series of monster books. The text is done in rhymes, which flow very nicely and slide over the tongue as smooth as a song. In other words, this can be read by kids alone but works wonderfully as a read-aloud.

The story itself is unexpected and grabs--a cyclops who lives on an island is captured by pirates and sold to a circus. It gives a new twist to this creature, which usually is seen as a brutal beast. The text is written white on black, and in this case, that works just fine.

But the biggest treat in this book are the illustrations. They are unique enough to grab little readers' attentions (big ones too) and lead through the story, adding just the right amount to make fantasies soar. It's fun simply to flip through them and enjoy the artwork all on its own.

Summed up: This is a lovely read for young monster friends, and one I can highly recommend.

I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

'Cyclops' by Rachel Meehan is a wonderfully lyrical book for kids with great illustrations. It is a modern take on the mythological character, where Cyclops is the only good/kindhearted character (despite being a one-eyed giant that's a stereotype for the big, bad variety) amidst a sea of bad characters - be it the pirates, scientists, doctors or circus owners. And it has a tragic ending.

While I cannot rave more about the beautiful rhyme and rhythm of the ballad-style story (which also makes it a pleasure to read it out loud), my 7 year old was quite disturbed with all the bad things happening to a harmless giant. While we adults have come to accept unjustified exploitation as something that we really can't do anything about sitting in our cushy homes, children do not look at it that way. The book prods them to ask a ton of questions and think about difficult situations, which is great. But from my experience, I think it would be more appropriate for children aged 10yrs and above. At the same time, I cannot wait to read the other books in this series.

This was an interesting read. It follows a friendly Cyclops, who is captured by pirates, sold to a circus, and then detained by the government. The rhyming isn't perfect, but it's not bad. The entire tale is accompanied by some really unique, vibrant illustrations that fit the tone of the story very well.

For a kids story, this is pretty dark. Everyone but the cyclops is a bad guy. And, yes, the cyclops kind of finds escape in the end, but only kind of. The upside of this is that I can see this starting some good conversations with kids about how we treat people. Maybe save this book for your older kids who can handle the more serious themes.
