I wasnt sure how good this would be but was actually pleasantly surprised.  Im ignoring the movie novelisation which was just an ok re-telling of the film.

'Silent Zone' was a good tale of the secrecy and early days of the US governments study of the aliens spacecraft and encounters.  Good characters and a good story made it an enjoyable romp.

The other story 'War in the Desert' was based around the very british people in the movie when the americans announced their plan.  It gives far more depth to them than they ever saw in the movie and saw life brought to the whole region and its dealings with the aliens during and after the films events.  It reveals a lot of information about the aliens and their technology and im hoping this wont just get overridden in the new novels Crucible and Resurgence.

Overall a good collection of stories if you liked the original film.

It was an absolute treat. To begin with, I never knew there was a book for this movie! At first, I was a tad bit skeptical, as I wasn't sure if reading this book would do justice to the movie that I grew up watching so many times. But I am happy that I picked up this book and read it cover to cover. It was such a feeling as if I am watching the movie all over again. The only difference is, I was reading it, and there were so many smaller and minute details that weren't shown in the movie(obviously). Each and everything was well linked and at the very end the way the book ended is a wee bit different from the movie and that was the only part I guess that deviated from the movie that I thought could have been kept as it is. Loved the book in all totality. Even the conversations between the characters were all accurate and at no point did I feel that the movie was better or I did a bad move by picking up this book. Loved it!

This omnibus was a mixed bag for me: the first book (Independence Day), especially compared to the cinematic film, seemed sparse and somewhat lacking in the expository content I had hoped to find. The next book (Silent Zone, back story of Dr. Brackish Okun) seemed better, if only because it contained new information (at least new to me) and explored the Dr. Okun character in some detail. Finally, the third book (War in the Desert) was the best of the three, with well-developed characters and lots of action; a very suitable companion piece to the rest of the stories.

The first novel was the longest movie I've ever read, but pretty much just like the movie. Second novel was good, third one just irritated me.

Silent Zone, featuring Dr. Okun, was a little too disorganized for my taste. His character exploration is riveting, and I did enjoy following him on his quest from a hippie to the lead scientist to Area 51, but the pacing threw me off. From chapters completely unrelated to the numerous characters featuring no other than Bridgette Jones, to other lackluster chapters, the pacing lacked, and the ending felt abrupt. Then on to War In The Desert, a fantastic story built around a simple blurb from the original Independence Day movie featuring a ten second conversation. It follows Reg as a flight instructor in the Middle East, features events from the other side of the globe that the movie never showed, and does so while still echoing themes of division within cultures, and unity as a human race in general. I thoroughly enjoyed following the war between mankind and aliens that continued long after the city destroyers had been annihilated, and the ending provided several well-needed character arcs. My only complaint was the numerous characters the omniscient narrator followed. My feeble mind found it difficult to keep track of everyone, in addition to a magnificent story.

If you enjoyed the film, then this is something you definitely need to read.

The first book is, I think, based on the original screenplay for the film, as there are some differences to what is seen on screen. But the story goes into great detail than the film and provides some interesting back story to the characters, which makes some onscreen actions make a lot more sense.

The second book, Silent Zone, is a prequel to the original film and tells the story of how Dr Okum got to be where we find him in the film. An interesting character piece that also sheds a lot of light on the aliens technology and how it all works.

The final book, War in the Desert, expands greatly on the brief scene we see of the British and Middle-Eastern pilots in the dessert, with the story taking place before, during and a few days after the attack.

Three novels for the price of one. Nice! I must say that the action scenes in all three novels were excellently written. It would have been nice had Silent Zone been the first in the set, but it's OK as the second. It's a prequel after all. I liked the back story on Dr Brackish Okun very much. Nicely done! Ware in the Desert was very entertaining and somewhat educational. Assuming that the author is either experienced or well researched, what I learned about Middle East cultures was very interesting. I hope it's all factual. In any case, if you enjoyed the movie, you'll definitely enjoy all three of these novels. Carry on!

I loved this book. I particularly enjoyed Silent Zone which gives the backstory of Dr. Brackish Okun, who though he is a seemingly minor character in ID4 was my favorite. It also expounded on the aliens prior to the attack that takes place in ID4 which was awesome. Just an all around cool read if your a fan of the ID4 movie.

Good read

The omnibus starts out with a novelisation of the Independence Day movie, in that it is nearly completely like the movie, the second and third novels are of the crazy scientist and Area 51 before the attack, and then the fight from the day after Independence Day in Iraq. Good read.

Three stars because the editing is very poor throughout the omnibus--missing periods or question marks, commas in the wrong place, spelling errors, etc. Otherwise, the three stories were fun to read.

An excellent read - the second book took me a bit longer to read, but all in all this volume greatly fleshed out the film! The whole story is so much richer now that I've seen all sides of it :-)

Pretty good stories, unexpected like, but regretfully the author took the Lords name in vain too many times.

ID4 Trilogy, War in the Desert is Action Packed Best

This is a trilogy of novels from the Independence Day universe. The first book is the novelization of the original film. It is entertaining, but there is not much additional insight into the events or characters. The second book, "The Silent Zone," is the story of Dr.Okun and the background on the Alien ship. This was funny and interesting and had quite a few surprising twists and turns. It explained a great deal about how the secret base's research focus was determined. The third novel, "War in the Desert," was the RIP roaring tale of how the coalition forces brought down a saucer in the middle east desert and discovers that the battle has just begun. This was an exciting, action packed tale that would've made a great movie on it's own. For reference, this ties in to the scene in the original movie where the pilots are in the Saudi desert and learn of the planned American attack. That is the general starting point of this novel and it brings together hated enemies who learn to put aside their differences and work together, fighting deception and aliens along the way. This one was my favorite and featured some great characters. This is a great set of stories that bring you deeper into the ID4 universe. War in the Desert really shows a much nastier side of the aliens than the first movie did and gives more information and insight on their terrifying plans and culture. A must read for fans of the series, especially book 3.
