"You what?" Suzanna laughed incredulously, "We're not communicating, are we?" You see, I'm Timmy's guardian. Me."
"Not legally." Logan Bradford stared down his straight imperious nose at her. "I trust you're going to be reasonable about this and not turn it into another -"
"Reasonable? Shipping a recently orphaned four-year-old to a strange house full of strange people is reasonable? Mr. Bradford, you'd better get off my property now! Before I call the police."
"All right, enough." She saw fury flash in his eyes. "I admit you've invested time and effort in my brother's son. How much compensation do you want?"
Well this was definitely a trip down memory lane. When I first read this book, I totally fell in love with it. Now that I’m a more seasoned reader I enjoyed it but not as much.
It is definitely a clean romance which I swear I don’t remember it being back in the day but hell I was younger so just kisses was probably terribly scandalous 😂.
The one aspect that I really appreciated with this book was how independent and self sufficient Susanna was. I find that older published romance novels can tend to have female characters who are a bit weak willed and lacking the ability to fend for themselves without a man. Susanna showed that she could be a provider and that when it came to acquiring a partner she was only looking for someone to share the burdens and the joys with.
Logan actually was also atypical. He was a man who was very observant of emotions and then grew to be more emotional self aware so that he could navigate and problem issues in a family setting better. Much better than the bodice rippers we remember from this era of the Romance genre.
In the end I think this is a sweet cute read and though I’m unsure if I’ll do another reread if this again when I’m even older, I can definitely recommend for younger reads getting into the genre.
1.5, really. I will never pick up one of these without reading the synopsis again (I'm still not sure how I did this time). The story was ridiculous. The characters were awful, except for poor Timmy who I wanted to miraculously become self-sufficient thus allowing for all of the adults in his life to die off by the end.
The Bradford men were heinous human beings with no redeeming value. Logan was never redeemed enough for me to justify any romance between he and Suzanna.
Suzanna had potential, she showed some backbone in the beginning, but that died quickly. She fought some in the initial court date before the judge, but didn't say the right things and neither her nor her useless lawyer pointed out that it was obvious the judge was a close personal friend of the Bradfords. That whole scene was idiotic. Especially that they let the judge's obviously biased ruling go with no formal objection. If nothing else, my behind would have been on Good Morning America or something like that the next freaking day. So she ends up spending more time with Logan because, surprise surprise, four-year-olds (especially recently orphaned ones) don't handle being uprooted and forced to live with strangers well. Does Suzanna try to parlay this into something that will get her sole custody back? No, the whole guardianship suit becomes background to her and Logan's burgeoning attraction.
I can't believe I actually read as much of this thing as I did (though I mostly skimmed, the irritation wasn't worth it). I think it's the fact I spent a dollar on it that forced me to do so. Thankfully, this was an obscure 1994 release, so I'm not worried about people clamoring to read it, or even happening upon it like I did. I didn't intend to write this much about it, but I just had too many feelings to not put them someplace.
