The soldier and the waitress.
They met by chance.

Jason Daniels was on his way out to Iraq. Another deployment. Another tour of danger and darkness. And all he wanted in his last few hours stateside was a moment of connection, of normalcy. In Kat, he finds not only delicate beauty but softness and sweetness. Behind that warm smile, she held a sincere heart that reached out to him.

Kat Ryans knew there had been something different about this soldier as soon as she had seated him. She had seen that hidden look of pain on his rugged face. With his hardened physique and powerful presence, it was clear that this man was nobody to be trifled with. But through it all, she still managed to see his wounded heart. A heart that needed a healing hand.

Together, they only had the one fleeting night before Jason left.

Two years pass.

Now Jason has left the Army, hollow and empty with only nightmares to fill his evenings. He fights every day to keep his sanity and to push away the darkness of his heart. He fights against the doubts he has of himself, wondering if he is just a lost cause.

Kat, having experienced her own wave of hardships and troubles, is fighting for her family and her town. Putting behind her own dreams of romance and love, she works to keep together the only place she had even been able to call home.

Then one fateful night, the soldier and the waitress meet again. Their lives collide completely and they see the wounds they have both gathered over the last two years.

But love is bravery. Love is courage.

Through love, can they both teach each other that they are not broken?

I received a digital ARC of You're Not Broken via Hidden Gems for the purposes of providing an objective review.

Friends to lovers or second chance romances are my romance trope catnip, and You're Not Broken was a bit of both, with more emphasis on second chances than on friends to lovers.

Kat and Jason meet one night in her uncle's diner, she senses his loneliness, and spends a little time with him after her shift is over. It's the first and last time she sees him, for over two years - he's deployed overseas. They write at first, then his letters stop, and Kat grieves for a while, then decides she needs to just get over him and move on. She's got too much crap to do to waste any more time on this guy.

Her family life is rife with tragedy throughout the book; she's a big sister holding the family together almost by sheer will, and her stubbornness comes in handy while Jason's gone.

No word from Jason for over two years and she runs into him again in a most unexpected place. She's cold and dismissive with him, not without reason. Jason's pretty determined to make some sort of amends, though, and he keeps showing up.

So far, despite the poor editing and numerous grammatical errors, I'm enjoying the story. Hart has me hooked, even if I am reading with a mental red pen in hand. Oy vey.

Then, the sex happens. It's a romance, so sex is gonna happen. I like a good raunchy sex scene. Well, frankly, I LOVE a good raunchy sex scene. But the section with the sex in it is decidedly different from the rest of the book, almost as if two different people wrote the disparate segments. It's also out of character for both the heroine and hero - in this case, the language changed, with the descriptions getting coarser and the characters going from zero to sixty in one weird scene.

When I read the first bit of it, my first thought was, "In the diner? With all the frakking windows? No way would she do it there. No way would he subject her to the potential humiliation of being seen. And what happened to all his objections? They're just magically swept away?" I still have a really hard time believing these two did the deed in full view of anyone who might have been outside. On top of the difference in writing, that took me out of the story entirely. Their first time deserved a little more thought put into it.

My favorite line was one which truly resonated with me: "If anything, I feel more useless and inept the older I get. I think it's because I keep comparing myself to who I thought I would be by now." For much of my adult life, this was a core part of my consciousness - comparing myself to the myself I thought I'd be and coming up way short. I get Kat, in that way at least.

Final evaluation: Good story. Promising writer. I'll be watching Gemma Hart in the future. With the help of a good editor or at least a proofreader, she has the potential to be great.

3.5 to 4 stars. There was so much promise in this book based off the first few chapters then it seemed to lose some steam. The initial meeting and interaction with the H and h led me to believe there was going to be so much more. I hurt for Jason, the H, because you could see the pain and sorrow in him. I loved Kat, the h, for being open and strong and wanting to comfort Jason out of human decency. That buildup was all great and I was hooked.

Unfortunately I got unhooked when Jason came back and they met again. The rest of the story felt too rushed and I missed the connection they had in part one. Where was that chemistry, that "it"? Both the H and h were MCs you want to root for and want to be happy. They're genuinely good people. They deserve their HEA but somehow the author missed giving me that feeling of connection with them in the second half of the book.

This is short; only half the book is the novel it promises.

Sweet Kat works at her uncle's diner and meets Jason, a military man passing through her little town on his way to be deployed again. Their chaste encounter becomes pivotal to both their lives. After a two year absence, he returns to help her save her beloved diner and town to repay her act of kindness.

It's a bit more complicated, with her sick brother and his debilitating PTSD, and their romance is tested. The conclusion was a bit too simple, but it was an easy read. It did seem a bit clunky, especially the love scenes which felt rushed and almost unsexy. At least the relationship built slowly and wasn't rushed.

It's a quick read with a nice HEA. It does leave some minor questions unanswered. Plus, there are some missing words and a few grammar mistakes that were difficult to overlook.

Jason is a solider who meets Kat the waitress while he is in town . He is mysterious and Kat is interested. They go on a date and get close in a short amount of time . He gives her an address to write to him while he is overseas in military and then he goes back . Kat writes to him and Jason writes a few times but then the letters stop. Kat tries and writes but when nothing happens , she figures she needs to move on and while she tries, her heart breaks beause Jason really made an impact.
A few years later Jason is back in town and he runs into Kat at a bar she just went to and that Jason happens to frequent. She was looking for help from her uncle's friend only to find he died the year before. Kat is going thru some rough times and was hoping her uncle’s friend could help her. She still cares about Jason but holds herself at arm’s length, because of what happened before; she doesn’t want to get hurt again. Jason tries to push her further away because he doesn't want to hurt her. –Jason has PTSD and suffers from episodes of rages that comes on real sudden and will do anything to protect his lady because he is so head over heels in love with her. Kat and Jason find their way back together and, in so doing, find a way to heal the pieces of themselves think are broken..
This is a sweet and at times sad story of 2nd chance love story and how if you do not grab your love, you can lose it. I like the characters ; they have spunk and they have a zest for life.

My rating: 4.2 stars ****

I think my opinion of this book is skewed by all the other books I’ve read since I purchased this one seven years ago, way back in December 2015. Maybe if I had read it back then I’d have a far more gracious reaction to this story and the writing than I had…

This story could have been sweet and heartwarming. Instead, it left a lot to be desired.

Jason finds himself in a small town diner the day before being deployed to the Middle East. When he asks the waitress, Kat, to sit and talk for a few minutes she does, and then offers to meet him for pie when the diner closes later that night. They spend hours talking, exchange addresses, and Jason leaves agreeing to write. But after several months of correspondence, Jason ghosts her.

Two years later they have a chance reunion. Jason learns how tough things have been for Kat since he left, which then spurs him to go all knight in shining armor on her.

I had several issues with this book. First, as many other reviewers mentioned, there are SO many proofreading errors. Wrong words, missing words, in one place they say there’s a job in Kentucky but then the next two times it’s mentioned it’s in Kansas. I can overlook a handful of errors, but there were a lot.

My next issue is that you have to suspend a whole lot of belief. A young, early-20s woman is going to lead the charge for revitalizing the whole town? The money to make all these renovations is available - and the work starts happening - within days? (That wouldn’t have happened even before a global pandemic and supply-chain problems!) Kat worries about keeping the diner in business, but there’s not a single mention of the astronomical cost of her brother’s medical care? Also, Jason and Kat never have a conversation about him ghosting her? Lots of loose ends are left flapping around in this story.

The one good thing is that Kat didn’t just immediately fall back into Jason’s arms because he’s still hawt (on the flip side…we also don’t ever get an apology for his poor behavior - Kat just forgives him because she knows how tortured he is because of his deployments). I also loved the witty, bantering dialogue between all the characters.

But other than that, I just barely got through this one. Thankfully it was a fairly short book (probably around 200 pages) and things moved quickly - which resulted in me feeling like the book needed more to be fully developed.

Side note: when you purchase this book it looks like it’s 565 pages long and it is NOT - there is a second book included by another author. I’m glad I knew that going in, otherwise I may have quit on You’re Not Broken thinking I had only gotten through a third of the book when I was really two-thirds done.

Will I read more by this author? Maybe. I’d be willing to see if she’s cleaned up her manuscripts and developed her storytelling skills. This book was one of her earlier books and I’d be curious to see if she’s grown as an author.

Enjoyable

Jason and Kay's story was sweet and enjoyable. The storyline, characters, and dialogue kept me entertained. There could have been a few edits here and there but I enjoyed the story.

The second book, by Michaela Adams, was also a good read read. However, it also could have used a little bit of proofreading, also.

You're Not Broken by Gemma Hart is a stand-alone romance about a military man and a small-town girl. Their meet-cute is absolutely precious and their story is bittersweet to start but has a great happy ever after. Well-paced with great characters and some fairly intense but infrequent steamy moments I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Kat Ryans is working at her Uncle's diner, Doughy Pop's, and helping him take care of her two younger brothers after tragically losing her parents. Things are tough but they are happy and close knit. When a hunk of a man shows up in the diner and asks Kat to just sit and talk with him for a while she is intrigued and obliges. Jason Daniels is set to deploy again and is on his way back from Arlington visiting the graves of his fallen men. When Kat takes a moment to sit with him it settles something inside him he didn't think would ever be at ease. They spend the evening together touring the town and park and agree to exchange letters while he is away. This goes on for a while but communication suddenly stops. When events start to spiral out of control for Kat she no longer has her soldier to lean on and has to handle things herself. Is she strong enough to take care of her family? Whatever happened to Jason? Can a damaged soldier allow love in to help heal his broken soul?

About to deploy to Iraq, Jason ached for a bit of human kindness. When he meets Kat, he sees a kind and beautiful soul. She asked to write to him and he agreed to keep a connection between them. They lose contact. Now, it’s two years later, they unintentionally meet again, and Jason comes to Kat’s rescue. Will he be able to stay away from her to keep her safe or will their connection pull them together for good this time?

It’s like magic! You’re Not Broken would NOT let me put it down, it was so darn good! Ooh, what great characters! Not only a thoroughly enjoyable hero and heroine, but a fantastic cast of lovable supporting characters that kept the story lively and energetic. Each and every interaction between characters was heartfelt and tear-worthy. The war-beaten hero saved the day on every possible occasion and was easy to love. Ms. Hart knows her stuff to keep the reader completely engaged from one end to the other, in touch with everyone’s feelings. Sweet, touching love abounds. I loved it and you can bet your sweet bippy, I’ll be back for more! 5 Stars!

I received the book as an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.

Kat meet Jason in her uncles diner, a couple of days before he was deployed again. They had an instant connection so they kept in touch and wrote letters back and forth. Then one day the letters stopped, and it broke Kat's heart as she had no idea if he was ok or the worst happen.
I loved this story, it has its heart warming moments, and also sad moments from when someone goes off to war and has so many bad memories that the only thought Jason has is to protect Kat and stay away. While Kat also has her bad moments cause she too has been through so much. But in the end I love how they started to spend more time together and grow that bond back and get closer. I especially liked that when they spent time together they were just both better and also had better sleep. I would recommend this book to any one who enjoys Military stories, a man who wants to help the special girl he once spent a evening under the stars with before he got an even harder exterior.

Before being deployed Jason finds himself in the small town of Peytonville, sitting at a diner asking the waitress to spend a few moments talking to him. Kat and Jason's connection with each other was deep and instantaneous and lasted through most of his deployment. When he returns, Jason feels broken and that his only choice is to distance himself from Kat, despite their attraction.

Even with his self-imposed distance, he still finds ways to help Kat's town, which is on the verge of being taken over by developers...

Kat and Jason find their way back together and, in so doing, find a way to heal the pieces of themselves they perceive as broken.

There were a few typos throughout the book that didn't get caught in the editing process. But it was a good book and a great happily ever after for the characters.

I love second chance romance. Jason is set to deploy and after burying another friend he chance wants to meet someone and make a connection. Kat a waitress in her uncle's diner is that person. After a night together he leaves with tge promise to write each other. Flash forward 2 years things have changed for both, Jason stopped writing and Kat is dealing with a lot of different issues. They run into each other unexpectedly and things go from there.
This is a fast read that I did enjoy. Jaso is troubled bywhat he has seen and while he is happy to run into Kat he has so e explaining to do. Kat is tryingto hold it together and when she sees Jason she is so overwhelmed she is scared to leanon him. The author does a good job with both characters but Kat was a little much.
Overall I enjoyed the story.

Great read!

Kat Ryans was a hometown waitress in her family's diner. Her life and passion was baking goods and being a caretaker for her 2 brothers.

Jason Daniels was a soldier, from a broken home all he was ever good for was fighting.

A chance meeting in her family's diner the 2 write back and forth for months during his deployment. He had no home or family so Kat thought that she could provide some of that for him at least be a friend. After a few months of no replies she gave up and lost hope. Two years later she didn't think the new construction team in town would be headed by his ghost.

He was damaged so he didn't think it was fair to taint him with his nightmares. All she wanted to do was love him.

This is a great read that has a bigger picture than just a love story. It also gives an inside glimpse to PTSD and what some soldiers go through after war.

I actually loved this book. At first, I wondered why I gave it a four star. Then I remembered. The only reason it isn't a five star book is it seemed too rushed at the end. I was like, and that's it? It confused me to be honest.

But otherwise the story was great. I loved the male main character. His brooding personality along with his other problems just sucks you in and makes you want to help him. That's what the female main character tries to do. But somehow he pushes her away and when they meet again, she's angry. Enough to push him away.

There's a good give and take between both of the characters that you're left anxious to see if they can work it out. Like I said at the start, I wasn't happy with the ending. It seemed so rushed. I wasn't comfortable with it. But it's still a great book!

This book started out wonderfully. It reminded me a bit of the Dixie Chicks song about the soldier going off to war, looking for a friend to write to back home. Thankfully, this soldier comes home. But he comes home with some serious issues. Meanwhile, the heroine life has become extremely hard and complicated while he was deployed. A chance encounter brings them back together. Its at this point the book lost me a bit. It seems he is magic and solves all problems, and though he admits his problem, we don't know how he deals. It's almost insinuated love cures all...and we all know that isn't realistic.
Overall this is interesting and I think it was worth my time. Enjoy!

I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is a great story.

Jason stops into a small town diner days before deploying to Iraq. Kat works in her uncle's diner. The two of them spend a few hours together talking, before Jason leaves. For a while they write back and forth, but then Jason's letters stop coming.

This is a story about two damaged, but good people. The subject matter is serious. There are some very emotional parts. But the author includes humor in just the right places.

I really enjoyed this book (I couldn't put it down and read it in one afternoon).

Mysterious customer sits down and orders coffee. In a tiny town like Peytonville, that's big news.
To Kat it's not what he ordered, but what he took...her heart.
After meeting and talking, she keeps up their relationship until she realizes she the only one in it. Heartbroken but determined to move on, Kat submerge her self in her work and family.
Until she is about to lose it...help needed even if it's not wanted.

I can honestly say I enjoyed it. It was a good story. It had some minor editing issues. Overall, very sweet.

I loved the sound of this story and I wasn't disappointed with it. However, the story actually finished at only 50%, the other half was filled with another author's work. There were also a lot of grammatical errors which made it difficult to read. I know a lot of authors self publish but surely they can make certain their work is of a decent standard, there is no excuse for such poor editing. Even though I liked the story in view of the editing issues I'd seriously think twice before reading this author again.

I had a few problems with this book. First off Jason never actually explains why he stopped writing Kat. We are to guess because things got worse overseas for him.

Once Jason returns and shares a hot kiss with Kat, he explains it was a mistake because he won't be town for long.
After their second kiss Jason tells Kat that he's dangerous because of his PTS .

But, we never see him have an attack. Only in a flash back when he was first injured and in the hospital.

I just felt there were a lot of holes in the story and could have been better

I thought I would read this book because I was getting an ARC from the same writer. I thought I should have had mad chemistry with this book because the heroine is a waitress and so am I.
I liked the love story for this book. They didnt go into great detail about the workings of the rest. which kind of surprised me as she was working/running it and they spent the majority of the book in that building. It wasn't a super exciting read but it wasn't horrible either.

This book was actually included as a free bonus with another book by the same author. I didn't love the main book, but I was pleasantly surprised by this story! I love how Kat's kindness really impacted Jason's entire life. He certainly had some issues when he came back, but I like how things were handled. I was surprised that they never specifically had a conversation about why he stopped writing, as I think that would have been an interesting scene. That being said, I really liked this book!

I loved it. Great story of two broken people finding love. Kat is a strong woman taking care of her family and the family diner. Jason is a Soldier with PTSD who wants to help the small town for Kat. all while trying to fight the love he has for her. keeping his distance so he won't hurt her.

This was a good read! The backstory about the town was rather original, which I enjoyed. So many books use similar storylines that they tend to all blur together, but the plot line with the town definitely made this one stand out. Glad I took a chance on this one!

Several times I noticed words missing, spelling errors and mistakes in the plot. One chapter the character was talking about doing a job in a certain state but in the next chapter the same job was in a different state. The book is only actually 50% the rest is a teaser for another book.

Rushed!

The story line was great. The heroine was too forgiving too fast and the story was over to quick. It just didn't seem real. It feels like the author was in a rush to get to the happy ending :(
