Speciality small press, Paper Golem, presents its eleventh volume, a slender anthology showcasing seven tales that bring together two of the things best loved by fans of science fiction: Space and Cats! Featuring veteran author Jody Lynn Nye and celebrated fantasy novelist Beth Cato, with an introduction by famed Space Opera author (and cat aficionado) Steve Miller, CATS IN SPACE is edited by Elektra Hammond, a show judge for The International Cat Association.
Elektra Hammond emulates her multi-sided idol Buckaroo Banzai by going in several directions at once. She's been involved in the copyediting and proofreading end of publishing since the 1990s for presses small and large and nowadays concocts anthologies, is a fiction editor for buzzymag.com, reviews books for the TICA Trend, and is acquisitions editor for the Dark Quest Books imprint Sparkito Press. Her steampunk story “The Case of the Duchess’s Dog” appears in the anthology In An Iron Cage: The Magic of Steampunk.
Elektra lives in Delaware with her husband, Mike, and the cat herd of BlueBlaze/Benegesserit catteries. When not freelancing or appearing at science fiction conventions she travels world-wide judging cat shows. I was ready to enjoy a bunch of comfry-cozy cat stories, but these were definitely NOT them. So many of these stories were either sad or mean; a few were hard to understand. I have five cats and I am sorry that I read this book.
Very delightful cat stories. This gave me some new authors to follow, though I have more now than I will EVER complete. If you like the kitties, you will like most of the stories in this book. Thanks to ALL the contributing authors!
Cats as aliens, cats as the master race on a planet with not quite evolved humanoids, AI cats on a colony ship with physically modified humans, and so much more. I loved the inventiveness of these short stories. The writing skill is uneven from author to author, but it's all a pleasurable read.
