It was More than He'd Bargained For

A week's isolation on a spit of land off the New Hampshire coast was a sure-fire cover story for Mark Elliot's magazine - if he lived to tell it. Before he'd even left the dock, though, the Meyer girls, who were most of his crew, had already knocked supplies overboard and nearly collapsed at the thought of leaving their hair dryers behind. And Jessie Meyer, who'd been promised a bonus and a credit for her photographs of the experience, behaved as though he were about to shanghai her and her three daughters.

Mark was certain he'd triumph over the wilderness, but he seriously doubted he'd survive a week with the Meyer girls, especially when their mother looked so young and inviting.

Magazine owner Mark Elliot wanted to take his niece and nephews to a small island off the coast of New Hampshire for a week of camping. He was also taking his staff photographer, Jessie Meyer, in hopes she'd capture the perfect picture for a magazine cover. When his relatives can't make the trip, he talks Jessie into bringing her three daughters on the trip. Jessie knows her girls will not like roughing it in the wilderness. She wonders if Mark knows what he is getting into with her girls.

I liked the first half of this story. Mark does a good job putting up with the teenagers complaining about being bored and not having hair dryers. He was good at coming up with things to keep them entertained. But when the group returns home and he and Jessie think about starting a relationship, the story went downhill. Too much angst and worry. Mark wants babies. Jessie has raised her daughters and isn't interested in starting another family. My rating: 3 Stars.

This isn't a mushy Harlequin romance! Instead of diving into Mark and Jessie's relationship, the plot focuses on their work assignment with National Geographic along with her challenges to raise 3 teenage girls and his military background. Very refreshing to read about their complex lives first before diving into the soap opera atmosphere.
