What if you were destined to be the arbiter of mankind?
An artifact is discovered triggering global implications of theological and mortal significance. In the Middle East, the Colonel’s archeological team stumbles upon an artifact and soon find their discovery is more powerful than they could have imagined. In the United States, Ron, a factory worker with little ambition in life, is burdened by a recurring nightmare which seems all too real. In France, Lieutenant Pascal’s calm life is uprooted by a disaster within his community. While attempting to reign in the situation, he finds the event under scrutiny beyond his scope of understanding.
Is history better left buried? Interweaving theological narratives with the present, Duality is the account of individuals who come in contact with a piece of history after its rediscovery, foreshadowing a dystopian future.
First of all, this was a stellar debut novel. It had fantastic characters, word choice/writing, and a suspenseful unraveling. I was instantly intrigued by the beginning and ready for the journey to come. As I got to know the characters and the varying timelines better, I was even more enthralled with the story. There were so many facinating pieces to the puzzle slowly falling into place and I didn't want to miss even a miniscule detail along the way. There were also several shocking moments throughout the story that kept me just enough on edge and wanting to read even faster. This book had no shortage of interesting revelations and thought-provoking scenes. The end left my head both spinning and seemingly winding down. It was really brilliantly done as a whole. The book had terrific depth and was a great adventure for the mind. I highly recommend it.
I won this book in a give away and found it very thought provoking. I am a huge character person as well and though Neil Charles did an wonderful job with there development and tying all the Characters together.
Overall, I liked this book. I found it very thought-provoking and deep in a lot of ways. I agree with other reviewers that it was hard to put down and I finished it in just a week (which is a short time for me, but likely a long time for more avid readers). I enjoyed most of the characters and thought they were fleshed out well and three-dimensional. The story really came together at the end; for the most part.
I had two issues that keep this from getting five stars:
1. Spoilers for the ending:
2. There are typos galore. I realize this is a thing that happens, and it's understandable, but it does take away from the experience at certain points. It also might be the reason I had trouble understanding certain things. The main example is a character is given a nickname and an explanation for it, and then other characters use another nickname that is not remotely related, and the first nickname is mentioned again far later on in the book and seems pointless. The nickname was That just pulled me out. I admit that I may have missed something, but I read the section twice and still couldn't figure it out.
As I said to begin, I did like this book. I am glad that I read it. Hopefully you will be too! Just know that it may not satisfy completely. I found and read this book on my own and have not received anything for reviewing it. This is my honest opinion. Hopefully it helps!
What a wild ride this was! The author kept me enthralled with these characters and their experiences. I am looking forward to other books by Neil Charles. I received my copy of this intriguing book free though Goodreads.
Found this book pretty hard to put down once you start reading it. Great characters and a great storyline that keeps you thinking. I look forward to seeing if there is another book after this. Continue the great writing.
I really enjoyed the book. Character development was very strong throughout the book, and I felt myself genuinely caring about different characters and what was going to happen next. The Tarentino-esque timeline layout for the storytelling was solid. Charles gave just enough of a glimpse into the future to foreshadow the fates, but the backfilling stories to the past is what made you feel for the characters and helped form the story as it unfolded. Charles did a good job of intertwining the stories of the unlikely characters and how their paths crossed without having to suspend judgement outside of the genre’s realm. It really left me wanting a follow up.
