There's a tendency not to review sequels to series that you like. Basically, if you liked the first couple of volumes then you tend to like the rest of the series. This is the case for Superheroes Anonymous that remains an entertaining series that benefits from its strong characterization as well as entertaining wit. I feel like it says something that one of the things I want to comment on is the amazing cover because there's not much to say that wasn't said the previous time.

There's a lot to love about Gail, Blaze, and her associates. This book actually did go in a direction I didn't expect with the introduction of "The Demobilzer" which is a gas capable of removing the superpowers of other heroes. Gail is immune to the substance but she's potentially the only one and it's interesting to see how various heroes react to the loss of their abilities.

My favorite character out of the book is Night Razor who is a geeky supervillain fangirl who just wants to get Gail to fight her. Gail, however, has very little interest in superheroism and is doing her best to ditch her like a friend you find tolerable only in small amounts. I could have used more of that for the rest of the book.

Honestly, I think the plot was a bit too serious as I like these books primarily when they're focusing on the day to day of superheroism. Still, I will continue reading.

Reader thoughts: This series has exactly what I look for in super hero books. I adore Gail. Sure, she's better at running away than attacking, and she often misses obvious clues, but she is also sarcastic and good-hearted. She has good friends, although I do wish they wouldn't tease each other with every breath.

Actually, that did bother me a bit. I don't think Gail and her friends have deep relationships with each other. They will rush to save each other, but they're exactly courteous. And Gail and the others don't really spend time asking how each other is doing. Granted, that could be off-screen, so to speak. Still, I would have liked to see them doing something meaningful for each other other than training and saving each other's lives. Maybe that's why I like Guy so much; he cooks meals for Gail and them, serving them not just saving them.

I like that Gail's willing to give everyone a chance, even Brook and Elwin. She is always getting hurt or pummeled by supers with more powers, but she doesn't give up or get depressed. She does get mad and need to cool down, and she seems determined to be rude to Eddie no matter what. That bothered me a bit. He is sort of everyone else's boss.

The book mentioned that Gail and Guy spend the night at each other's apartments. I decided not to infer more than that.

I think the reason Jessie liked Gail is because she's so trainable. She isn't good at fighting yet, but she keeps learning. It's not just that her powers are growing (although they are, and they're almost too much), but Gail actually works hard to learn what the others teach her. She's humble enough to accept that she has a lot to learn.

Favorite lines:

"Davenport had pulled a few strings to get her a better job. Unfortunately, she had to follow a certain set of rules. She chafed at them constantly. Usually through long text message screeds sent to my phone at two a.m."

"It was time to meet my maker. Again. And probably save him, too."

"Because I had the luck of a one-leaf clover."

Writer thoughts: This book treats us to a reverse of Gail's earlier life. Before, Gail is Hostage Girl and always stolen by villains and rescued by Guy. In this book, Guy gets stolen by villains and has to be rescued by Gail. It was really a touching moment. I think Gail and Guy understood each other more after that scene than they had before.

LD also could have included that scene because it reminds readers that not all damsels in distress are female. It was like a statement, saying that sometimes women have to do the rescuing. And it's okay. Men get their chance, too.

Once again both Lexie Dunne and Harper Voyager have delivered an ass-kicking story, and as part of the Super Reader program I get to read it for free in return for an honest review. Sometimes life just sucks that way. ;)

Seriously though, I've never gotten into the whole superhero thing, I left that to my brother and his comic book fandom. Nothing against the genre, it just never piqued my interest. Then right around the same time I received an egalley of Ms Dunne's Superheroes Anonymous I happened across Peter Clines' Ex-Heroes series, and while I'm not rushing out to stock up on X-Men graphic novels, I discovered that (as with any genre) there are great stories to be found.

While Clines pits his cast against a zombie horde and the fall of civilization, Dunne puts us right in the middle of our heroines "average" daily life. They both do well with their storytelling craft, but Lexie stands out by her ability to humanize superhumans. (She also has a great sense of humor, which I particularly enjoy!)

Now, because HV sent me #3 but not #2, I have to backtrack to see what I missed in the last installment!

*My Thoughts*

Gail Godwin, aka Hostage Girl, returns in How To Save The World, the THIRD installment in author Lexie Dunne's Superheroes Anonymous series. Gail has returned to her former job at Mirror Realty, but that doesn't stop supervillains from showing up out of the blue to see the infamous Hostage Girl. Gail even has her own best enemy forever in Razor, who chomps at the bit to take Gail on one on one. But, that will have to wait after Gail, Angelica Rocha (roommate & trainer), and boyfriend Guy Bookman (aka War Hammer) learn that Doctor Mobius is alive and that's not necessarily a good thing.

This is a fantastic, fun addition to the series about super-powered Hostage Girl and a wide assortment of super heroes and supervillains. The mad scientist who endowed Gail (aka Hostage Girl) with her powers turns out to be alive and held hostage by new villains—and he's created a new concoction that can neutralize superpowers. The stakes are high as Gail and her friends rush to save the day. I especially enjoyed the running gag of Gail versus her so-called nemesis, and the way it's handled at the end is a hoot.

Book one of the series was pretty interesting in concept. What if someone who is always taken hostage by super-villains is injected and becomes a super-hero? Interesting. The romance was so-so, but that wasn't why I was reading anyhow. This book takes the concept further, but less interesting. The continuing adventure of a bewildered superhero who does not have access to good training.

Could Not Finish.

This is a cute series. How To Save The World is a good story about an accidental superhero. She is definitely an unusual superhero. And personally at 5'2" it's nice to have a hero with height impairment. I hate trying to reach the top shelf.

Summary:

In the third book of Lexie Dunne’s action-packed Superheroes Anonymous series, Hostage Girl returns once again to save the world.

Gail Godwin—once so famous for being kidnapped by supervillains, the media still calls her Hostage Girl—is done with superheroes and their shadowy schemes. She’s got a cute boyfriend, a great roommate, and she’s even returned to her old job. For the first time in years, life is exactly what she wants it to be.

But when a figure from her past resurfaces, he brings with him a plague that changes the game for every superhero and villain out there. Now Gail must team up with both friend and foe to help save the world she thought she had left behind.

Review:

Gail Godwin is trying to live her life as normally as possible, but at every corner there is a person that needs help, or a villain that wants to kidnap her again, or even now fight her. She when back to her old job and put it back together, and know is living with her roommate Angeline, while dating Blaze, now War Hammer, Guy Bookman. Gail powers have changed and now she has the ability to copy other people’s powers. Things are going well for Gail, but not for long. It appears that her maker is still alive and in the hands of another scientist that will use his knowledge for evil. It’s on Gail and the other Superheroes, and some Villains to find him before everyone becomes ordinary.

I liked How to Save the World, I have been following this series since it came out and I’m happy with this book. While at first I felt that it was going a little slow, I saw my mistake and wasn’t able to put it down to sleep. The story was engaging and fun to read, while also hiding mystery and secrets.

I have always liked the ability to copy other powers, and I loved that it was used in this book. I also liked that the author didn’t had Gail copy all the powers she comes across, but made it specific. Powers are the main topic of this series and also of this book because mad scientists are always trying to find a way to defeat the good guys.

We know that Gail is a good person and will always try to do what is best, but her moral code is different than normal heroes, and that’s something that I liked about her. In this book, we see her making hard choices and see her deal with her decisions, while trying to save everyone.

While I don’t know if there are going to be more books to come, I feel that there should be because there were some questions left unsolved, and I see a lot of material for more stories in this wonderful world that Lexie Dunne has made. I would love to read more about these superheroes.

I loved Raptor and her story, I want to know more about her and her family interaction.

If you are a fan of the series Superheroes Anonymous series or of author Lexie Dunne, the I recommend you How to Save the World. In this book, everyone that is special or has superpowers is in danger and only Gail Godwin/Hostage Girl can save the world from those who want it to be rule by evil.

I enjoyed the book. It was fun to read. I am, however, getting frustrated by the protagonist. In the first book, we saw her grow as a person as she applied her experience as Hostage Girl into becoming a better superhero. In the second book, we saw her struggle with a mighty foe and gain fighting confidence from her interactions with Fearless and her battle with Lodi corporation. And then... well, she's pretty incompetent again for 2/3 of the book. She even has trouble taking down a single hold-up guy at the Chinese restaurant and she feels like The Load most other places. And then, near the end of this, she's offered the mantle of a prestigious hero in-universe and we're expected to see this as plausible. I just don't buy it.

If you enjoyed the prior books, you probably will enjoy this one. If you're interested in seeing Gail grow as a person and a hero, you're going to be disappointed.

Super fun (didn't intend the pun, but it works)

I have read all three of the Authors' books. Love them all. Great characters, fast pacing, great sense of humor. I wish an element of this book that was intended to be a surprise was better hidden, but that didn't diminish my enjoyment. If you are a writer that reads your reviews- please give me more!

Continuing to be ridiculously fun, the series brings us sort of full circle, showing how various heroes respond to being depowered. The plot continues to tie in well with previous books while still seeming fresh, and I'm interested to see how Gail's new direction pans out. Also Kiki is an intriguing character and I hope we get to see more of her.

4.5 stars and this time with thanks to the whole series I'm rounding up to 5 stars!

Just as good as Volumes 1 and 2 with as much action, intrique and tension as you could want! Seriously, I closed Book 2 of this series before lunch... ate my sandwich and started before my break was over on Book 3. Now it's bed-time - if I want to be worth anything tomorrow - but I have spent my evening BLISSFULLY enjoying this final (?) book in the trilogy! Just good old-fashioned fun that I wish just wouldn't stop! Bravo!

Sure, the Superheroes Anonymous series are pulp-y quick reads (ok, maybe not speeding bullet fast but still) and shouldn't/wouldn't/couldn't be confused for 'fine literature' by any stretch of the imagination... but tbh I haven't had this much fun over a 3-day period since probably college! Just exactly what the Doctor ordered (unless his name might be Mobius and then it would be anyone's guess). Dunne's sense of writing keeps you going and really INVOLVED with the main characters who are awfully damn human for being Supers. And if you grew up on a steady diet of books like Doc Savage or The Avenger, you'll just love the modern take on this genre!

Plus, unlike so many other authors that are coming to the end of a series, Ms. Dunne does not seem impatient nor bored by the time this book - again with a really cool ending - rolls around. If I had any real complaint at all it would simply be that some of the fight sequences could have been even more detailed and overall, the book simply ended far too soon!! (Ok, maybe I wasn't crazy about the Raptor aka Female Batman [totally saw that coming btw] before but she really grew on me in this book... oh yeah, and please try and ignore that lame cover, ok? Sheesh...)

Fans, get this series and ENJOY it!

I dropped a star from the first two books for a couple of reasons. I didn't mind the cliffhanger at the end of book 1. But at the end of the last book, Gail and Brook were sharing a room and I thought all sorts of things could come of that. At the beginning of this book...nope, not even a mention of that for quite a while. I even thought maybe I accidentally picked up book 4 instead and went back to double check what number this was in the series. So then I kept waiting for that to be relevant...and still nope. I was annoyed for quite a while as I waited for something significant to come of that and it never did. I finally gave up on that, but it sort of ruined a lot of the first part of the book for me. I did like the story line of the Demobilizer and how it affected people. I liked Raptor's story development. I didn't care much for Gail's story development through this one. And Guy needed more story as well - plus, what's going on with his siblings? It seems like we are missing some important stuff there but it's not played up as anything urgent enough for Gail to get details on. The bad guy part of the story was hit or miss for me...okay, Tamara and Chelsea, sure. But the mad scientists I had a hard time understanding their relationship to one another and what the end goal of all this was. From what I can tell the next book is the last in the series, and unfortunately it will be a while before I can read it. I still think the series is relatively fun and it keeps my interest enough, so hopefully I'll enjoy the last one when the libraries reopen and I can get ahold of it (I don't like reading e-books, so I'll just wait!).

One of the things I like about this series is that it really sets me in a world of superheroes without "bogging me down" with all the details about the super powers. That's not a bad thing normally. In most cases those details are the meaty inside of the superhero books. But here I don't want it. One might worry that in a series like this there's a lot of handwaving and technobable but aside from some poor choices like teleporting is "'porting" and phasing which is an unclear movement power that initially sounded like momentum shifting. I don't hate a lot of the textual content. The only thing really missing in the narrative was comma patient Jeremey

I also think it's interesting they don't have hard hero-villian lines but they also don't have switching hero-villain lines. I remember starting a book with a similar heroic premise where the son of a villain finds out the villains are the good guys and the heroes are fascist. That isn't the case here so while we do have complexity in our powered people there's no grand conspiracy (with the exception of villain jail being a day spa).

At the end of this book I have two questions. Jeremy, the excess anti-hero powder and Villain Jail. But another solid ending that doesn't leave me begging to read the next book to find out what happens next. Unlike the family tree that was so poorly designed at the front of the book didn't actually mean anything. We weren't introduced to new family members.

Continuing the fun comic book/superhero series whose previous books, Superheroes Anonymous and Supervillains Anonymous, I've enjoyed, this book describes the continuing adventures of Gail Godwin. From being a popular hostage for supervillains to take in order to challenge superheroes, she has gained superpowers of her own (unwillingly, due to a mad scientist kidnapping her).

In the wake of bad experiences with the organization that handles most superheroes, Gail is working independently, reluctantly training with some of the heroes to learn how to use her not entirely impressive powers. But then comes a development in which a mad scientist -- the same who gave Gail her powers -- develops a tool to remove superhero's powers! Now Gail may be the only one who can save the day...

The series is becoming a more typical superhero book, which I don't mind, but people who really like d the first book for the novelty (kidnappee becomes empowered and flips the script!) will probably want to get off the cart. I enjoyed this -- an ideal beach read.

While at times I thought the silly-o-meter was set a bit to high on this one, it was overall a good third installment to the series with more witty one liners, charming comedy, and suspenseful superhero action. Overall, I felt like this work got better the further in you went with the story eventually carrying you on, though there were a few scenes that definitely sparked my “oh really?”-sense … that all stated the characters are charming albeit sometimes rather similar in personality, the tone is a whirlwind of lightness, and though dramatic things happen, overall, there’s a sense that it’s all gonna work out. Anyway, i digress, and would conclude in recommending this work to those that have read the first two, though I can only rate it three mad scientists out of five.

Enormously entertaining third offering in this series.

Filled with quirky humour, sassy backchat, loads of action and another gripping, unusual ending. I subtracted 1 star because there was a bit too much recapping of events that transpired in earlier novels.
