A decent read—not Ranstrom’s best, but reasonably entertaining. The mystery/resolution of Georgiana’s past was good, as was the angry sexual pull between her & Charles. But the overdone Big Mis bogged things down, as did Charles’ insistence on pushing Georgiana into their sham relationship when it was clear that same relationship was never a sham for either of them. It felt like fuel for an already weak misunderstanding; the initial separation of their younger selves was instigated by Georgiana’s guardian, so they weren’t to blame for that, but now it’s seven years later & they’re both experienced adults, so ACT LIKE IT. 🙄 I can’t feel legit tension if a simple 20-minute conversation would clear 90% of the roadblocks these two wedged into their marriage.

Anyway.

This one features Ranstrom’s usual mix of refinement & seediness in the early 1800s, which I appreciate. It was also nice in that there were genuine issues that must be overcome or ignored by Charles & his family—which of course they do, because they’re good people, but these problems didn’t just magically evaporate because of the MC’s fantastic sex life. Oh, snap! 😱

I always enjoy Gail Rainstrom's books and this was no exception. The hero was once in love with the heroine. He was going to propose to her when her guardian told the hero that the heroine did not like him. Fast forward several years and the heroine has been married and widowed twice.
The hero is a spy who is also trailing a family of criminals whom he thinks has murdered his friend. The home office wants him to investigate the heroine because their is some grumblings from her late husbands family that she is a murderess. I don't want to include any spoilers :) Both the plot and characters are well developed and the book kept me interested throughout. Though it is somewhat a mystery the romance really shone through the plot.
