"Over three hundred years ago," he began, in a low wobbly voice, "the sea around Duncade was terrorized by the dreadful pirate Captain Augustine Crow. Captain Crow was the cruelest, meanest, and smelliest pirate to ever set foot on a deck."

And so begins the tale that the oldest brother uses to scare the beejezus out of his younger siblings. Nine-year-old Will is the most frightened of all, as it seems the Captain has vowed to return and seek out the nine-year-old cabin boy who once sank an ax into Crow's piratey skull.

There's danger on the rocks and in the air as the boys attend The Sprat's Jig, an annual dance held at the town hall.

There, young Will learns the answer to that age-old question, "What does a nine-year-old fear most - a pirate's ghost, or the prospect of dancing with a real-live girl?"

This book offers pure enjoyment with just the right amount of chills for all ages.

This book is a spooky but fun serving for children aged seven to nine, tapping into their fear of ghost stories and pirates. It’s a hilarious tale about the sometimes horrible way in which siblings treat one another. Brothers Marty and Will are on holiday on the wild Irish coast. Marty is always playing practical jokes on his brothers, including younger brother Will. But when Marty tells the bloodcurdling story of the cutthroat pirate Captain Crow ‘with plenty of blood and guts’, Will ends up terrified. Will can’t be sure if this is another of Marty’s tricks or if, indeed, Captain Crow’s ghost is really out to get him. The idea of being cursed by the bloodthirsty pirate sets off a series of disasters for Will, but also ends up with a delightful ‘just deserts’ for Marty. This story is not too long and the text is broken up by dialogue and great illustrations; a good book for the newly confident reader. However, it serves plenty of tension and humour to keep the older reluctant reader entertained too. Humour is apparent in the vivid portrayal of family life with five brothers. But the author also allows the characters to ‘turn the tables’ in their roles. Marty, the joker and trickster, in the end needs Will’s help. This allows Will, who has managed to rationalise his own fears, to emerge as a hero.

Valtsu ja Make lomailevat vanhempineen meren rannalla sijaitsevassa Katajarannan kylässä.

Eoin Colferin "Legenda kapteeni Korpin hampaasta" (WSOY, 2006) jatkaa Legenda-sarjaa totutuilla linjoilla.

Tony Rossin kuvitus on sekin onnistunutta.

From the author of the Artemis Fowl series, a clever chapter book for youngish readers. Part family relationship story (5 brothers in the same house), part horror (despite the insistence on science and phosphorescence, there's some horror and suspense), part comedy, this is a fun book featuring a 9 year-old main character. There are several pictures per chapter, but the hundred pages is mostly text. This makes me understand, appreciate, and sympathize with young boys better. I didn't choose this book, but I'm glad I read it. Colfer is just a masterful storyteller.

This is Eoin Colfer at his best where he tells the story of two borthers who are forever playing practical jokes on one another but when Mart tells the story of Captain Crow and his teeth Will is terrfied! This book is suitable for girls and boys from the ages of 7-9. It is full of mischief that children will recognise and engage with.

I absolutely love Eoin Colfer's Aretemis Fowl books but was unaware that he had written some shorter books for slightly younger readers so when I saw this I just had to read it.

The book is written from the prospective of Will, a 9 year old boy on holiday in a caravan with his family. His eldest brother likes to scare him with ghost stories and one such story is the local Legend of Captain Crow's Teeth.

I thought this book was excellent and would appeal to young boys trying longer books for the first time. The illustrations are quite Roald Dahl-esque but capture the story well. I laughed out loud at the descriptions of his four brothers and their personalities. Any child with siblings that tease and torture each other will relate to this book.

Many children are scared of things that adults don't even consider. Ghosts or what they see on TV or stories told to them by siblings or friends. Colfer shows that often those people scaring you aren't as brave as they make out and often the things scaring you have a perfectly reasonable explanation.

It also gives a funny account of Will's first experience of the local 9-11 year old disco and how it didn't live up to his expectations in the slightest!

Captain Crow's Teeth
by Eoin Colfer
Legend has it that way back in Ireland's history there was a ruthless pirate named Captain Crow. One day, Captain Crow attacked the wrong ship. A brave cabin boy attacked Crow with an axe and planted the head of the ax in Crow's forehead. Crow survived for a time (with the ax blade still in his skull), but swore he would hunt the cabin boy until the end of time—or until he had his revenge. That was hundreds of years ago. When the rocks on the coastline glow a neon yellow, even to this day, legend says that Captain Crow's ghost is rising up out of the water to capture the boy who planted an ax in his head. Thing is, he isn't sure which boy attacked him, so any boy will do! Will and his family of 8 (six brothers) are camping in the town near the rocks where Crow's story began when the neon glow begins on the rocks...which brother will he choose to take his revenge?

Finally a really fun boy's book! Eion Colfer is smart and fun to read, he doesn't talk down to his audience and is not afraid to be silly. You get a whole array of experiences in this book from funny, to scarry, to coming of age. The family in Colfer's story is so much fun from the 5 year old brother who's decided to start using baby talk again to get a way with more, to the twins who sing songs and shake their butts at Will mocking him for going to dance with girls. I think showing boys in a non moshy way first dealing with presenting himself to girls is a great thing for a boy's book and hilarious for readers of any gender. And finally I find Captain's Crow's teeth story just scary enough to hold your attention, but not too scary with it's scientifc explanation that Will can repeat over and over to himself.

This had the potential to be a terrific little book for early primary-aged children but I felt it didn't develop as it could have. The ending was a little abrupt, like the author had put a limit on page numbers and when he reached that point he simply closed out the chapter he was writing.

Still, it was witty and quick and my children enjoyed it.

My boys loved this book. It was just the right combination of being silly and being true to life. Any book which details the trials and tribulations of sibling rivalry in a humourous way just can't go wrong.

Entertaining childrens books are hard to find. I enjoyed Spud Murphy more but still found this a fun read. My 8 year old daughter read and liked both of them.

Perfect 7-year-old boy book. Family full of stinky, troublesome boys. Short read, but some meat to it. We've ordered up a few more in the series.

"The Legend of Captain Crow's Teeth" is another great installment on Colfer's Legend of . . . series and a hilarious children's chapter book for ages seven/eight to twelve. The book has a male protagonist and is packed with real-life scenarios of sibling squabbles and childhood adventure. The comedy and fast pace of the story line will surely hold the readers attention throughout the entire book. This book is a great “spooky” story for Halloween as our main character/narrator becomes victim to a local ghost story everyone seems to believe but him.

Adventure story with a pirate legend buried inside it. Also, an excellent story about family and growing up.

Could be used to study legends, first person writing and diary writing; history of pirates and sea travel; maps and sea charts.

Another read-aloud book to my 5yo who just finished Kindergarten. I liked the Spud Murphy one better, but he thought this one was as funny as the other one, so it was a hit with the target audience.
