About the author

James Davies was born in 1945 in Philadelphia. He studied mathematics at Oberlin College and the University of Washington, but in 1970, the game of Go drew him to Japan, where he has lived since. An amateur (5-dan) player but a semi-professional writer, he has turned out numerous books and countless magazine articles on Go.

It was a really nice introduction with different ways of teaching, going from small-board example games to tactics, common jousekis and openings, to discussing a full-board game (Kitani v. Seigen, 1940). What I especially liked as a beginner was the last part where different strategies for handicap games were outlined, some for each level of handicap.

Might read again before I move on to non-introductory texts, even.
