Child of the Cloud is the fifth book in the Pie Rats adventure series.

Deep in the heart of Aladrya stands a mighty mountain. Rising high above the clouds, its rocky crags and windswept cliffs are home to four species of birds. With only three days left until the full moon feast, Whisker's mission to save his sister hangs in the balance. Even if he can reach the mountain alive, he still has to outwit and out-fly the dreaded birds of prey.

There's a jaunty air to this tale of pirates (that is, pie rats or, in a singularly more mathematical moment, pi rats) intent on rescuing the captives of Cloud Mountain.

Whiskers' sister, Anna, has been sold by a fox to the birds of prey on Cloud Mountain. She's to take part in the Full Moon Feast attended by the eagles, ravens, falcons and hawks. (Shiver me timbers, lads, shades of The Silver Chair. Yep, take part as in - on the sacrificial menu.) She's not the only small furry creature being fattened for the banquet - which, as the story opens, is a mere three days away. Location: unknown.

Whiskers and his friends - Ruby Rat, Hook Hand Horace and Chatterbeak the parrot - set off on a daring rescue mission. Time is running out to rescue Anna and the other prisoners. Climbing glaciers, hang-gliding, decoding secret messages in paintings of the night sky centuries old, discovering secret passages through mountain caverns, fighting lake battles - yep, all in a day's adventure for the intrepid rodent and avian friends. Pie rats they may be but, arrrrrrr me hearties, 'twould seem the price on their heads is far too high for common mischief-makers. Just what have they done to upset the governor? Or is it what they know? Either way, as the most wanted crims in Aladrya, the reward for their capture is too tempting - even for those who ought to be their allies.
