The Ship #2

Revolution

Rate this book
Zax should be training to pilot a fighter with his best friend Kalare, but instead he defied the Flight Boss and his career is in the toilet. His new job managing sewage in Waste Systems may be disgusting and boring, but it allows him time to become adept with his Plug and study the Ship's infrastructure. It also exposes Zax to civilians for the first time in his life as he works closely with Imair and befriends eight-year-old Nolly. A year-long period of civilian unrest, which started when Zax revealed his discovery of an unknown spacecraft from Earth, finally erupts into full-blown revolution. He is thrust into the middle of the rebellion, alongside longtime friends and enemies, where his special talents make the difference between life and death. Zax eventually puts himself into a position where he can rocket back to the top of the Leaderboard and restore his career -- at a price.

Revolution audiobook version . Aubin takes the story in an unexpected direction in this story. Events in Landfall have trashed Zack's plans for a career as a fighter pilot. Zack has been transferred to waste management in the asteroid. While he's working in waste management, Zack is exposed to life among the civilian members of the crew. Zack's actions surrounding the mysterious spacecraft's Earthly origins have planted the seeds of revolution. Those seeds blossom in this continuing story. The consequences of the revolution have dyer consequences on the organization, and direction of the ship, on Zack's life, those of his friends and his bidding romantic relationship.

While this series may have started out as young adult fiction, this story introduces serious themes with a great deal of action. Aubin explores questions of redemption, betrayal, and ethics. Aubin begins to hint that there is more to the artificial intelligence know as Alpha than meets the eye.

A interesting turn on the direction of this series making it completely different and interesting

If the first book started being a very juvenile book and ends with a very intriguing and dark turn, this book is full of action and tells the result of an Action done by Zax by pure anger at the reasurance of his suspicion that Mike do was killed. Zax now has to help the man that he thinks is killed Mikedo to survive to a Civilian revolt and at the end to avoid the Civilians to gain complete control, kill him. Zax fails not because of him but because the Boss has sold the future of the ship and the crew to the leaders of the Civilian Revolt in order for him to gain more power.

Great sequel!

The second book in this series was actually as good as the first with one exception - a better ending point - which earns it one more star from me. It was weird that Zax and Kalare's argument was never resolved from the first book, but the reader is expected to assume its resolution at the start of this book.
This is well written and has a very interesting storyline of mutiny, which one would expect from any long-term ship mission with no clear end in sight. There are enough twists to keep the reader engaged and shouting, "WHAT?!?!" out loud, to the consternation of anyone in the vicinity.

Nice follow-up

I was intrigued by book one in the series and immediately bought book two. I was not disappointed! The story took an unexpected turn, and dealt with Zax's demotion in a much more realistic manner than these series usually would.
In addition to building well on the story from book one, the author's writing was tighter, more focused and more polished than his first attempt. I am really looking forward to books three and beyond!

Good read!

I was disappointed with the ending of the first book. So I was hesitant to jump into this next one. However, I was quickly sucked in and really enjoyed the plot. The setting of the ship between crew and civilians makes an interesting plot to figure out who is the good and who is not. It is a quick and enjoyable read!

This installment of the Ship saga gets better in storytelling and give deeper insight about main character's emotions and line of thinking, which provides a more believable portrait of decision making. It conveys a fair depiction of why exercising power is never easy and that nobody in charge is completely good or evil, which is a good lesson to learn in life.

Of all the “this massive ship was built to carry mankind to the stars” books, I like this one the best. Interesting pretense and good science in this series. Plus, I like self-published books that are good.

This one moves the story along, but left me asking questions.

A great read

I got the first book in the series when it was offered free on Kindle. From the start, I was hooked. Book 2 continues the story of Zax and his shipmates. He has some very tough choices, as events unfold. Great book. Give it a read. I hope you like it too.

Saga continues

This book continues the story at an even better pace and intensity than book one. It's subtle but while the first book at seems seemed to be more light and directed at teens, this book was more dark and more adult oriented

Good book

Too short for my taste. Again I would like more descriptive prose. Great as an adventure series, though. Shows great promise.

Riveting

Perfect fun sci-fi. It's not trying too hard but it's still imaginative and engaging. Truly grateful I randomly picked up book 1.

A good start

Politics abound on an ark. Not sure where it’s heading. I will reserve an opinion until I read book 2.

Classic Science Fiction

In the tradition of classic science fiction with lots of plot twists and a surprise ending. Good characters and snappy dialogue. Definitely recommend.

Picking up from the first episode, suspicious young cadet Zak has failed to learn his lesson, again, and is re-assigned from the glory days of being part of the crew to the badlands of waste disposal with the civilian staff, where there is adventure and skulduggery afoot that he never sees coming and which could alter life onboard The Ship. But this novel is ultimately about The Ship, cruising through space, looking for suitable planets to seed and the author gives us flashbacks to how it all began and Adan. These are not stand-alone novels, but the second part of a highly-addictive 5-part series of SciFi novels. Four CLANDESTINE Stars. 302 pages. Kindle.

At almost 70 years old and an ex-NASA guy I have read a lot of sci-fi, my favorite reading
I got the book Landfall free. Started reading it in between some hard sci-fi I was reading, basically to relax. The first book came off in the beginning like a YA book, however, the story was so good it grabbed me and wouldn't let go.

I anxiously got the second book Revolution and was not disappointed. I thought the story got even better, more intricate with a harder line. Now, I can hardly wait to read the third book Homeward.

Do yourself a favor and pick up these books. I'm sure you will enjoy Jerry Aubin's thinking and writing.

The book is easy to read and easy to understand even without the first tome.
On a spaceship trying to find another planet suitable to human beings, a ship traveling for 5,000 years without results so far, you have two categories of citizens: the crew, well fed, treated with respect, with nice quarters, and the civilians, meaning the lowest ones, half starving, depending on the crew;s mood for everything.
After 50 centuries of obedience, the civilians start a revolt, turning fast into a revolution. Who can be trusted is unknown, as most of the people involved play double or triple agents. The explanations, if they come, will be in the last tome, of course. So far, I have not learned much.
I'm surprised the author said he decided to write so that his kids had something better to read than most ya books. The complexity of the alliances, apparent or occult is enough to make your head spin. And you learn not to trust anybody here, which is not the lesson you want to give your kids, is it? But maybe it will get clearer with future books, and a bit more optimistic.
I'm still trying to understand what happened in the past twenty years to switch SF books from a rather optimistic future, as we read until the end of the XXth century, to a totally dystopic one. Is it the fear of extremists? the general lack of confidence in governments? the power of the minority of very rich people? But obviously, the times of happy futures foreseen ahead are gone.

Spectacular second installment of what may prove to be the best science fiction series in many years.

Author Jerry Aubin does it again with Zax and Kalare now neck deep in a civilian rebellion that threatens to tear the ship apart. The "conspiracy level" increases while Zax and Kalare attempt to navigate the uncertain waters of politics and treachery on a generational ship teetering on the brink after thousands of years attempting to seed the human race throughout the stars.

Once again, the action and tension are palpable and the characters smartly written, with the best balance of description and plot movement I've seen in a long time.

In summary, Jerry Aubin's writing is some of the best sci-fi I’ve seen in a LONG time – pro quality stuff that belongs on the NY Times list and in the hands of TV executives from Syfy. Who knows? It might become the next BSG.

Even better than the first - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

The 2nd book in the YA science fiction series starts with Zax reduced from the head of the class to working in waste management because he followed his conscious a year ago. The civilians are now in revolt and the future of the ship and its crew are in contention. A good follow up to book 1.

I especially like that this author leaves each book complete. Although he intends it to be a 5-book series, he doesn't leave the reader with a cliff-hanging ending. There is obviously more to the story, more to learn about the characters and the universe which makes me look forward to reading additional books in the series, but I don't feel like the author has left me hanging at a critical moments, which has become the standard in too many series.

Like the last one in the series, there are flaws to find here in the storytelling, characters, dialogue, etc, but for a brand new author, I remain very impressed. Overall, the story is still one that I'm quite interested to see where it's going, it reads well, and I enjoyed it more than some "professionally" written books. Well done, Mr Aubin!

I'd highly recommend this to anyone who is interested in giving new authors a chance and people who like a good space drama. This isn't "hard" science fiction, more of a science fiction "setting" than anything, but it kind of reminds me of Starship Troopers (though we'll see if it has a larger political or moral statement to make by the end). It's an example of what can go right. We'll see where he takes it.
