ALTERNATE COVER EDITION ISBN: 9781508448983 Georgina I went on the blind date to get my friends off my back. I wasn't prepared for Finn. Hot, famous, take-my-breath-away Finn. But no amount of chemistry with a movie star changes the fact that I'm a widow. That my heart is lost forever. And if Finn needs something, too? That's not my problem. Except... I can't stop thinking about him. Finn I thought LA could offer me no more surprises. I’ve seen it all. The good, the bad and the plastic. Turns out, LA had one last surprise for me. George was everything I knew I shouldn’t want, but I couldn’t make myself stay away from her. The only thing standing in my way? Her.
Travel romance writer, Holly Mortimer, will transport you to the shores of romantic Ireland, where you'll lose yourself inside the drama and the love that is The Murphy family. From oldest to youngest, these five siblings fall in and out of love, travel the Irish countryside and learn that loving someone, doesn't always go as planned.
Holly transports the reader into her world, filled with travel, babies and lots of alphas!
DNF unfortunately because essentially I could not give more of a F***! I quit halfway. The good news I got this for free on Kobo. So I won't complain about how much this cost me. If I could give any advice to the author, you have time to edit the shit out of this before you start making people pay for it. Do not waste this opportunity. The concept has been done before. But I'm always open to new interpretations.
And I have to admit, It started well enough with an engaging heroin with a troubled past. We follow her as she goes to a dreaded blind date set up by her best friends. In a chance encounter, she meets Perfect Mr Hollywood. At that point, I thought why not, it can be a light romantic read, a welcoming "no-brainer". But there's "no-brainer" and "no-brainer". The first one is a "dull your senses" kind of, and you can relax and enjoy the ride. The second is like a strange " use of brain not recommended" ad policy. One of them Mig doesn't like too much.
The book did nothing but infuriates me with its nonsense.
The MC is a writer and so good a writer that her book will be adapted in a movie. She meets a movie star in a bar, she surprisingly do not recognize him because she is surprisingly dense for someone who has an actress as a best friend. She is full of trauma. But while she sniffled one or two crocodile tears for her first love she can also appraised the merchandise (and the strong arms, the cologne etc) of Movie Star. Girl knows how to make the most of a fake therapy attempt.
Movie star is very assholish, rude, stalkerish, instalove, instalust, one-dimensional cardboard character. He just doesn't feel real even less real than his character on TV. Except, from the name of his show, we don't have much details on his profession. He is overconfident D... who believes he can get away with anything. He is not developped at all. Most important, he can't be bothered with manners and etiquettes, as well as common sense, as he tried to forcefully come inside the house of a woman at 3 A.M. The TSTL heroin let him in. Before I could ask myself why in the hell would she do that, the hero dropped a bombshell on the last remnants of realism in this story. The best friend told him everything. She called him to explain that her friend was broken. What kind of love story would start like this really? What's with the best friend calling behind the MC's back to share the MC's trauma with, for all we know; a perfect stranger ? Who does that ? She is an actress. Does she not understand the words "confidentiality agreement"? It's just a few examples of things I did not like.
I can't be bothered to give you more examples because it will probably spoil the entire plot. So to sum it up, there are problems with editing ( if a foreigner can tell you that, it's a problem) , flat characters with too-stupid-to-live tendencies and fake dramatic past ( when you get instahot for someone else while pseudo mourning the love of your life it's creepy ), unrealistic heroes, annoying supporting characters, a cliché-ridled plot, and some very cringe-inducing cheesiness.
"I flopped back into the soft bed as gently as I could, which wasn’t gently at all, and curled into a ball and let it all come out. Years and years of grief bottled up finally being released. God, it hurt physically and mentally. That’s my life right now summed up. A fucking mess of hurt."
I really enjoyed this book!! Holly is new to writing and did a fabulous job with her first book! George, the female MC was very easy to relate to and Finn, the male MC is someone we all wish we could get to know! Their connection was heart pumping, heart stopping and heart melting!
"I ran all the ways this relationship was going to go wrong but found that my mind kept getting stuck on the possibility of it going right. I took a deep breath and decided to push those fears aside for a moment and just try to let some light into my life."
The one thing I truly liked about this book was how Holly used reality in the story line. Tragedies, life altering scenarios and heartfelt realizations made this book a must read! The relationships between the characters was portrayed very well, and it was hard for me to put the book down. I couldn't get enough!!
"I took a deep breath and let the fear and anxiety go. He was right. If this was going to work, I had to let someone else take the lead occasionally. "
I am very honored was I was able to read Holly's first book, and I look forward to hopefully reading more from this talented lady!
I enjoyed this debut book by author Holly Mortimer.
While this was a nice quick read, I myself tend to like a book with a little more detail and background information, such as how did George meet her friends and how long had they known each other, as well as how long was George married. I would have liked some more detail in some other areas as well, but will leave those out due to possible spoilers. Nothing omitted was anything major to the story. They are just things that help me connect with the story a little more.
All in all, it was a nice story and I'm interested to see where the rest of the series goes!
Blindsided was a fun, light story to read after a few stressful days at work. Holly Mortimer was able to make me laugh and enjoy the quirkiness of the characters. The story has a good amount of romantic moments that make you smile. This book was received for free through Goodreads First Reads.
Received a copy of title from author in exchange for an honest review; full, original post with quote(s) can be found at: http://mnonmklreviews.blogspot.com/20...
This book had it's ups and downs for me... more ups than downs, though. My biggest disconnect with it was the age of the characters. Up until I was twenty-five, I really only enjoyed reading books with characters in their twenties. Thirties scared me a bit, so I avoided those. Now at my ripe ol' age of twenty-seven, my general age frame is mid-twenties to mid-thirties, unless I'm in the mindset of a young/new adult -- even though the entire time I'm reading them, I'm cursing their youngness, but 'eh, what can you do. When I read a book with a twenty-six year old finding happily ever after, I sometimes feel bad about myself and lack of a relationship but... that's my own hangup ;)
That said...
George is nearing forty. I almost put the book down.
But I made a promise, so I stuck it out -- besides, who the heck cares how old someone is when they find love? Love's love.
We have Georgina and Finn in this book. George is nearly a hermit in her widowhood. She writes romance and has given up on her happily ever after. After all, she holds immense guilt over the death of her husband. Her friends, who mean well, send her on a blind date. George and my opinion of blind dates are exactly the same[...]I mean, c'mon, who loves blind dates except the friends who are doing the setting up?!
While waiting for this pull-your-teeth-out mission to occur, George drops her phone and bumps heads with a gorgeous stranger. At the end of the night, George is at odds with the fact that she's met two men in one day, two more men than she's met in any single day in a long time. The blind date doesn't work out so hot, but the gorgeous stranger starts to text her and George slowly comes out of her shell.
Turns out Finn is an actor, and this doesn't exactly earn him points with George.
What I loved about this story was the gentleness of Finn. He was a good guy through and through. He did everything he could to keep George comfortable with his lifestyle, and wanted her around. George had her fears -- Finn's lifestyle brings a lot of those fears out, as well as trouble -- and she did a lot of running; what she felt for Finn was decidedly bigger than what she even felt with her husband.
Altogether, I loved seeing these two break through walls and find a true, forever, happily ever after. It was easy to forget my own issues with the book and be deep in the lives of Finn and George. Finn, although a big star, was easily relatable and more down to earth than many stars -- and he wasn't written in a way in which you'd roll your eyes and say, 'Yeah, whatever, Holly...' -- you can fully see him as a normal guy who just happens to have his face plastered on magazines and movie posters. George had her fears, and Finn was certainly the type of guy to help her out of her little hole. Their ending was decidedly perfect for them, and I'd love to see more of these friends who shorten their names to boys' names... because I like boy names on girls.
if the story was more believable, it would not be a bad book. But the author did not realize that, while she was bothering us with the internal turmoils of George, there was actually very little expressed by her to Finn. The story is quite nonsensical, " I love you, he loves me, what to do?". The heroine is a widow and scared to love again after losing her husband in a car accident. The hero, Finn, loves her from the first day, but seems to understand her reticence to commit. Most of the book is about her hesitations, which we understood from the beginning. Every week or so, George and Finn meet to argue and one of them asks forcefully the other one to listen, threatening to leave if the other one does not. It gets to be repetitive, sadly! Getting close to the end, you have editing problems, like "its'", or "in site" for insight, but that is easy to correct. The biggest problem is a lot of loose ends : George writes romance books and hits dead lines regularly, plus she has one of her books turned into a movie. You would expect to hear about her writing, to learn about the movie - what a deal! but no, not one detail is given. She has at least one glamorous friend, Sam, an actress who seems famous. How did they become friends, when George only moved to L.A. after her husband's death? Finn is a young actor, just getting famous now. But he is 34... a bit old for a breakthrough, although Harrison Ford made it around that time -but that is remembered because it is exceptional. Actors normally get famous or not during their teens or early 20s. Finn, for a celebrity, does not have anything organized to protect his private life, and no security either. Hard to believe, too. The aggression by the fan comes out of nowhere, we don't know if she was someone Finn, knew, or just a crazy loon. At the end, George suddenly knows her name -how? And repeatedly, the questions, I love you, do you love me? I trust you, do you trust me? etc, etc... It is honestly worth 2 stars, but it is a debut novel, so let us hope it will get better. No comment on the two steamy love scenes. Every book feels like a re-run of 50 shades, sadly. I wish I would understand though why Finn wondered so long before sleeping with her. That makes absolutely no sense -but maybe it avoided another couple of sex scenes, so it couldd have been a good idea.
So disappointed. After reading three barely okay books this month, I was really looking forward to a fun, easy, romantic read. After reading the other reviews on this book, I thought this was it but I was completely wrong. The whole story was so cheesy. I hated the characters and none were believable. Finn's bossy and Neanderthal ways made me incensed and drove me crazy. Her wishy washy ways and inability to make any kind of decision was equally irritating Add to that, an editors nightmare with first person being switched to third person more times than I can count is enough for me. Won't be reading from this author again, definitely not my style
This was a surprise gem of a read. It was an awesome read with author and widow George capturing the interest of Hollywood actor Finn. What made this read special was the way in which Finn treated Finn and the way in George was not interested in his celebrity status. Whilst George is not confident and has numerous high walls built up around her, Finn won't give up in breaking the walls down. Put this together with a psycho fan determined that Finn is hers and hers alone and you get a tense and high intensity read. Finn, in making George feel special, makes the reader feel special as well.
I loved the fact that this story has the two main characters struggling with letting the other in enough to really be in their lives. That is a very real struggle that is happening in my life and so many others. I love that they didn't give up on each other, even if there were struggles and setbacks. I would totally recommend this to anyone who needs to identify with someone who isn't going to just fall in love the second they see someone and will question it a lot. It was perfect!
I started the series with the third book world's apart, now that I read blindsided I can see they have the same story line but I love the story!!! I am a faithful believer of the second chances, we all need a Finn in our lives. doesn't matter how freestanding a woman may be, it is easy to fall in love with who wants to control our life in order to protect and love us. we all want to be saved. and Finn is all that George needed
WOW!! I cried.. I laughed.. I cried.. Holly sure knows how to make you cry with her words. lol. This was a wonderful book! I enjoyed it plenty and couldn't wait to get back to reading it when work came in the way... like gosh. :) Thank you for writing! Looking forward to reading book 2 because I'm definitely curious at to what type of man Frankie is getting!!! :O
I won this book on a Goodreads giveaway. I truly enjoyed the story. It was a true love at first sight book with suspense thrown in. I fell in love with both characters immediately. Easy read. Story kept me wanting more.
This was truly a feel good story that had just the right amount of twists and turns it really kept me guessing until the end I'm stuck in a blizzard and needed something good to read you delivered thank you
I really enjoyed this book. Very well written. Very understated and likeable characters. Linked in a way that is not over the top. I enjoyed the back story and how they played into today's life. Bravo......
Awful, the editing is terrible, the start was ok but then it just got weak, and predictable, so cringe-worthy at times, and to many cliches. I coudnt get away with the story, characters or where it was going, it was to predictable, sorry i never finished it
This book was waiting to be read for quite some time now and I finally manged some time for it but I am honestly super confused about this book. The story could have been really good - not like "over-the-moon-great" but good. But the book (I am sorry I have to be so open and honest and I do not mean to disrespect the writing) was killed by its writing style. The plot had repetitions of stuff that was totally unnecessary. The writing changed from first to third person with one sentence. And the characters never followed a straight line in anything they did - changing their directions and oppinions sometimes twice on one page. I am sorry for the story but it really hurt to read this book
