Louis the laugh, as he likes to call himself, wants to be a comedian. He is always telling jokes to his family and his friend Maddy. He believes the big break he needs is going to be on a TV talent show called Kids with Attitude.
He works very hard on his jokes, but is the opposite at school, expecting a Z on his latest essay for his teacher Mr Beach. When Mr Beach gives Louis a letter to take home to his parents with strict instructions not to read it, of course - Louis reads it. It's not good. It's not even close to good, labeling Louis as a troublemaker, and wanting to make an appointment with them.
With his best friend Maddy’s help, Louis gives a forged letter back to Mr Beach from his father. It tells of a lost job, depression and no desire to leave the house. After all, if his parents knew how bad Louis was doing at school, they might stop him from going in Kids with Attitude.
Mr Beach is suddenly, annoyingly, very understanding, trying to help Louis as much as he can. Another problem is his friendship with Maddy. Why is it that things change as soon as they go on a 'date'?
I really enjoyed this story, although the cover had me thinking it was for younger readers eg.7+ Packed with jokes, witty comebacks, and early teen dramas. Funny!
Honestly it was never going to be my favourite book ever. Whilst I appreciate it trying to cover themes like redundancy and men being the stay-at-home parent, I found there was a little bit too much sexism "Dads don't make good Mums" and the neighbors insulting Dad by calling him a housewife and such. It's not the sort of book I'd like to recommend to students because it's got almost no substance to it. The main character is very self-centered, entirely unfunny and doesn't seem to appreciate or value the people in his life at all.
That being said, I can see the sort of appeal this book would have to children, it's bright, colorful, the title is a relatable topic for them and it has a Diary of a Wimpy Kid feel to it.
Aspoň deníková forma by mohla zaujmout.
This book is my favorite book ever because it has funny jokes and events in it. I’ve read all of the books like this one and they were so funny and amazing.I really liked Louis because he was the main character and so cool!
“What is the biggest dream of a panda? Taking a colorful picture “
I really had fun with this book: My Parents are Driving me Crazy by Pete Johnson. I laughed more than I laughed as I read rage book that follows this one- How to Update your Parents. I thought some of the situations were laugh out loud funny. I felt that Johnson spent time weaving the plot so I felt that it was neat and developed well with fair pacing. I was never bored. I enjoyed all the musings of the protagonist. I liked the vulnerability of the protagonist and his dad. I also liked they both showed a variety of ways in which we can deal with our problems. Most appreciated was the fact that we all need help. We need a good support system whether that includes friends, family or a group of persons with the same struggles who are positively impacting our world. Good job, Pete Johnson!
Louis is a budding comedian and he lives with his mum, dad and younger brother. His mum and dad have just changed roles , with his dad staying at home and his mum working. Only problem is dad can't cook and wants the boys to tidy their own rooms - but the situation improves greatly when Louis manages to recruit him to do his homework for him! This book is a laugh a minute with a few suitably 'gross out' moments that will delight many boys (or girls!). The jokes throughout are suitably groan worthy and the description of the awkwardness of teen relationships and the difficulty of moving a friendship into dating is hilarious and even at my age I could empathise!
Mijn ouders maken me gek.
It has humour, it has quirky but believable characters and it has just the right amount of eww-factor to really appeal to kids (and big kids like me !). If you'd like to buy a book as a stocking filler this Christmas, this one will be a safe bet, appealing to teen and tween-aged readers of both sexes and all reading levels.
