Sequel to the #1 Bestselling epic fantasy, Sands.

Storms rage across the Sharani desert. Those clansmen who survived the devastation in the Oasis take refuge in the Roterralar Warren. But just as they grew to understand in the Oasis, maybe they weren't meant to be together at all. Change is in the wind. The Orinai are coming.

Gavin struggles to find his place within the clans while Beryl begins to recognize that what he did in calling the Orinai will have devastating consequences. In an effort to atone for that, he sets in motion events that will lead to the end of safety and, possibly, the destruction of the Rahuli people.

After waking from weeks of troubled slumber, Lhaurel struggles with what she had to do in the Oasis and the burgeoning powers within her. As everything she holds dear begins to fall apart again she is plagued with the one, most important question. Can she save her people once again or is she unwilling to pay that price?

I want to point out that I did not read the first book in this series. I was asked to do a review on this book, and so jumped ahead, which is something I don't usually do. I do plan on going back to read the first book, though, in order to get the full story, but I feel that this book gave enough information about things that happened before the events in this book, never once leaving me confused.

I enjoyed this book. The story was intriguing, the history of the Orinai and Rahuli (which they discover throughout this book) was in-depth and compelling, the characters were likable (some a little more so than others, but each drove the story further on, especially as they grew), and I had a good time reading about their adventure.

There were some editing issues throughout, and I expected more action in their adventure, what with all the talk of what is to come and the feelings/vibes they were getting, but it was a good YA book, and I plan to read the next one in the series when it comes out. The ending, at one point, seemed a little easy, but it has left me wanting to know what is to come next, and that's always a good thing from a second book.

Note: I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

While Sands was exciting with unexpected twists and I expected an excellent result from the sequel, Storms exceeded my expectations. This book revealed the horrific side effects of magic. Characters I thought were invincible in Sands became more vulnerable in Storms. Mental illness, fatigue, and physical changes plagued the mystics who practiced their great abilities. To me, this heightens the adventure because anything can go wrong (and it did).
Kevin L Nielsen is a master of creating mystery to drag readers from beginning to end at two in the morning. There were so many times when I promised myself to step away from this book at the end of a page, and couldn't. For most of the book, even though the plot continued to progress, another question or cliff-hanger would arise that forced me to continue.
There were many plot lines, but the story wasn't difficult to follow. This added depth, a hint of romance, and even more adventure than I thought possible. Storms finishes with a conclusion that made the story feel like it had a clear ending but with a dramatic cliff-hanger. I don't think I can forgive the author for that until he publishes the third book; however, I appreciate the reassurance that there will be an addition to the series.
There were enough typos to notice, but the publishing company reassured me that the editor will eliminate most of these mistakes before publication. Other than that small issue, I thoroughly enjoyed this book from the moment I opened page one to the final scene. This book will be most appreciated by young adults from the ages of 14-20 who loved fantasy adventure.
Without a question, this book deserves 5/5 stars and I'll be adding it to my "loved-books" list on Goodreads. You can purchase Stroms from Amazon http://tinyurl.com/je2kdkd and read my full review of Sands and Storms by Kevin L Nielsen on my blog http://tinyurl.com/zyg9d57

Book 2 of the Sharani series concentrates on both Lhaurel and then more heavily on Gavin and his interactions with the tribes, as well as others in leadership roles, such as Khari, Cobb, and Farah. Though the struggle with the genesauri may be over, there's really more of a social movement in this book with change of leadership, new mystics, living in a new place, as well as realizing the danger in not standing united.

Though I have a couple of issues with the writing, the story is really one to keep reading for. This series does just keep getting better in terms of story, so I would rank this higher on my list than book 1.

If Sands is about choice, Storms is about the consequences of those choices.

There’s more than a little of Frank Herbert’s Dune here, and that is by no means a bad thing. Nielsen draws inspiration from the sci-fi classic, both in framing (the journal entries that open the chapters are a great choice here, and will feel familiar to fans of Herbert’s work) and themes, but while the parallels are apparent, Nielsen weaves a tale that is all his own. Lhaural’s journey has only just begun, and in Nielsen’s second installment, that journey becomes much more complex.

I love Lhaurel as a character and the journey she embarks on, and Storms continues that journey, taking it in unexpected directions that will shock and amaze. A young woman finding her own path in an oppressively patriarchal society is especially poignant, and the supporting cast of characters are all wonderfully written.

The world that Nielsen has created is impressively well done. The customs, names, and ways of the various clans and the world they inhabit are all beautifully developed. The overarching mythology of this series is of utmost importance, and it is further expanded here.

With intrigue, wonderfully drawn characters, a sweepingly epic tale of survival and magic, and unpredictable twists, the second installment in Kevin L. Nielsen’s YA fantasy series, Storms, is fiercer, darker, and grander than its predecessor, which is no small order, given the excellence of Sands, the first in the series. A definite must-read.

I'm really really enjoying this series. I find it to be fresh and interesting, and while it continues to remind me of Dune, it doesn't feel like it ripped off another series. It's unique and interesting and honestly I couldn't put it down.

In the second book of the series, everything from the first book is kinda in shambles and the main characters are both kinda wrecked. I find it really cool to watch Lhaurel's journey from the lowest girl in her tribe to a badass that pretty much terrifies everyone around her.
I also spent WAY to long hoping that Kaiden was gonna come around and rejoin the heroes. Silly right? I dunno, I just kinda liked him.
So much change in this book! The entire world isn't at all what the reader knew from the first book in the series, and the things they think they know are also not at all what they think. The characters have such a narrow view of the world that they have no idea that there is a much larger world out there and things aren't at all what they thought.
This whole series didn't go as I expected and I can't wait to see where it goes in the next book.

I was grateful to receive the book, Storms, for free in exchange for an honest review. After reading Sands, the first book, I was excited for this one to release.

Honestly, I loved it! It was hard to put down. It picked up right where Sands left off with Lhaurel making a huge discovery about herself, the clans, and what it happening to the genesauri monsters. The book helped introduce a larger view of the world and explain more of the magic system, which is not too blatant for non-fantasy readers. I got to meet and love other characters, including the Orinai, and didn’t want the book to end.

Being the second in a series, I felt that the plot stood well on its own and enough loose ends were resolved at the ending that I wasn’t left hanging. I definitely didn’t expect it to turn out the way it did and was pleasantly surprised and shocked about some parts, even.

I would definitely recommend both Sands and Storms, even to those who aren’t into fantasy. They were both fantastically written. Bring on the next book!

Definitely recommend it!

I haven't read the first book, Sands, but coud keep up with the story. Interesting how each of the chapters begins with a piece of information from the scrolls that helps understand the plot. A story about courage, facing change, and preparing for an attack of an unknown enemy. The characters are likeable and the sequence of events is program perfectly and fast paced.

Paranormal fantasy that will keep you on the edge. Great for teens and YA.

Wow. This is an amazing sequel. In this book, Lhaurel takes the role of a secondary character; she's weakened after her display at the conclusion of "Sands". This story is based around Gavin and finding a way to save his people not only from something he doesn't even know is coming, but also from themselves. They're just as stubborn as before only now they have even fewer reasons to trust each other.

I enjoyed the pacing of this book, there was always a sense of danger on the horizon and that kept the tension up while they worked through other conflicts of having the Rahuli clans forced together and at each other's throats. In addition, I also enjoyed learning the history of how the clans were created and learning more about the magic system in this world.

The ending was true to the characters. Lhaurel has a plan, without informing anyone she puts it into action and it lands in some serious trouble. It was both terrifying and exciting, I can't wait to get into the next book.

One thing I would have liked to have is some of this information in the first book. After reading this book I did have a better understanding of the events and outcome in Sands. After reading this book it gives the feeling that the first book was more of a prelude to what happens in this book, I still enjoyed the journey immensely. I'll be sad when it's all over.

I have been waiting for this book "Storms" since I read the first in the series "Sands". Absolutely loved the first book and feel the same way for this one. The plot was intriguing and the characters were fabulous. I cannot say enough great things about Mr. Andersen's writing ability. Am looking forward to the third book "Skies" with much anticipation.

"The Bleeder froze with his hand half way to his quiver, eyes widening slightly. Then the sword took him in the chest. For a moment, the sword crackled with surging light, the buried hilt deep in the Bleeder's chest. Then the smell of char grew stronger and the man toppled into the sand."
- Storms by Kevin L. Nielsen

So after the crazy ride that was, Sands, we all expected it to calm down a little in the second book right? Wrong. If anything this book was crazier, and more intense than the first. Everything you believed in the first book to be true you will question.

At the beginning of this story, Lhaurel, is asleep and we get to see more of Gavin. At the end of the first book he brought the clans together to fight against the Genesauri and hes now trying to figure out his role in this new life while living in the Roterralar Warren. Hes one of the quirkiest characters in the book and I loved getting to see more of him. His and Lhaurels relationship is also something I loved to see develop throughout the story. Their both aware of the other and they treat each other like siblings. Something I found really sweet.

There are so many characters in this story and you'd think as the author starts introducing more, and more characters you'd get aggravated but each of these side characters add something to the story and they've all become these unique people fighting for their lives.

When I started the book I got really frustrated with Beryl, but as the story continued I just started to feel sad for him. When he called the Orinai we got to learn more about the magic and powers all the characters in the story have and it explained so much. For some reason I really liked Samsin. He's a jerk to just about every other character but I liked him (is that weird?). The Orinai are some characters I want to see more of in book three. I need it now please!

When Lhaurel entered into the story she was different. After what happened at the end of book one when she saw what her magic could do shes worried about hurting someone and wondering just how powerful she is. She's a much more vulnerable and fragile character but I liked seeing that side of her. I felt like we were meeting a whole new person. But don't worry she's back to her usual awesome self by the end of the story.

This story was so full of suspense. The entire story we're wondering just whats gonna happen and the ending was shocking. Literally I'm still reeling. There are so many twists in this book that it was hard to keep up at times but it was all worth it in the end.

I'm giving this one four stars and I think if you're a fantasy lover (or just a book lover) you should definitely give this one a try. Honestly this book was such a fun read. Bring on book three!

I received this book as an advance copy in exchange for an unbiased review. I was not disappointed.

Where Lhaurel was the primary point of view character in the first book, with other characters taking center stage at various points; this time Gavin is the primary point of view.

In the first book we met Gavin briefly. He is a wandering outcast who had sworn to climb the walls of the Oasis and discover the truth behind the stories passed down in his family. In this book he is trying to unite the clans. Unfortunately, that is a harder task than he thought it would be. Old prejudices die hard. The clans have fought each other for years. Just like sands where they live, alliances shift constantly, and holding it all together is almost impossible.

In this book, Lhaurel is trying to come to terms with being a blood mage. It is a thing that none of the other mystics have ever seen, or is remembered. She is incredibly powerful, but that power comes with a price. That price being the blood of others. She hates it. She hates what she has become.

Now the Orinai. They are interesting. To them, the desert and the Rahuli people are just legends. Everyone thinks they died off a millennia ago. The desert is just that, an empty, lifeless desert. As it was, the only people who inhabited it, in their opinion, were slaves and criminals. The culture clash is bound to be epic.

I liked this book even more than the first. The characters were multidimensional and well rounded. There was a lot more emotion and humanity to them. They have all been broken somehow and need to find a way to fix both themselves and the people around them. At times it was hard to read, because you hurt for the struggles they went through. At other times I was cheering for them and hoping for success.

I am going to try to not spoil anything if you want to read this series for yourself. It really leaves you wanting to know more, to see what happens next. I really believe that this author has good things in store.

This story starts right where the last one left off; but there is so much intrigue and questions that it begins with that you start to realize just how deep and complex this world is that Kevin Nielsen has built.
The questions that are raised in the second book also help you realize exactly where the story of the first book fits into the bigger picture (much bigger picture).
You'll learn (almost) everything you want to know about the mysterious Elyana.
This book also gives further explanation of the magic system and how it's structured and how it works.
Who did Beryl send the message to at the end of the first book? How did he send it? What will happen because of it? Find out in this book.
The seemingly innocuous great-sword becomes very important.
Find out what happened and happens to Kaiden. What was his plan?
In one paragraph it opens you up to a whole new world you never knew existed.
So many questions arise and are answered in this book weaving them into a very interesting story.

This was pretty good as a sequel: The world is expanded quite a bit, and we learn a lot more about the Rahuli people and the world around them, which they know nothing of. It’s a good book, not a great one. It took me a while to read simply because I wasn’t dying to know what happened next.

As the main character, Lhaurel doesn’t do very much. She’s very rarely proactive and not in many scenes. Gavin takes over as the main character, I guess. I like him well enough. While the characters don’t feel quite fully developed, the dialogue is pretty good, along with character conflict.

The writing is adequate—competent, but not excellent. There are quite a few editing errors. My biggest pet peeve is the spelling “alright.” Aaaargh!! It makes me want to carry a protest sign everywhere that says “ALL RIGHT!”

After reading Sands I waited anxiously for Storms to come out! Sands was fantastic and left me wanting answers to questions that were left at the end! Storms did not disappoint!!!! It answered the questions and created more! It was sad as we had to say goodbye to a few of our favorites but mesmerizing as it introduced new characters that you quickly got attached to. The author has a way of weaving the story making it hard to put down making for late nights of reading even into the wee hours of the morning!!! If you want a book or series that will keep you captivated until the end Storms is the book for you!

I am now anxiously waiting for the third book to come out!!

I am a little disappointed in myself because I thought I could read this without having to read the first book, which is semi true, but the fact is this was so amazing I can't help but kick myself in the butt for not reading the first! I am a huge fan of mystery novels especially when there's romance involved so this book defiantly did not disappoint. So many twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. Right when I thought I had it figured out.. BAM I was surprised again.

As you all know I'm not one to give out details of a book.. why ruin it for you? But I will say you will not be disappointed at all. I gave this 5 stars because it deserved it and for no other reason.

Thank you for sending me this to review for free, my opinions are completely my own and 100% honest.

I really enjoyed reading Storms! I had read the first book and I was looking forward to the second. It didn't disappoint! The book picks up shortly after Sands and the hard won peace is about to be shattered as ancient foes realize the Rahuli still exist.

The characters all face new challenges and have to forge new relationships as the danger and intensity ramps up! I like how the adventure unfolds and I am really looking forward to reading the next in the series when Kevin finishes it!

I loved this book. It was my first experience in this author's realm and I loved it. I would recommend reading the first book, however, because the names of the characters and of the people was a bit confusing at first. I loved the in-depth analysis of each character that was done so effortlessly through dialogue and decisions the characters made. I will be visiting Kevin L. Nelson's world again. I was given a free copy of this book in return for my unbiased review. Thank you!

I loved STORMS! The second book in the series did not disappoint.
The introduction of new characters and the further development of existing ones keeps it interesting and pages turning. Once I figured out what Lhaurel is, the story got even more exciting and I couldn't wait for confirmation! I will anxiously await the next book for answers to all the new questions I have and the many adventures of the Rahuli! Definitely a very enjoyable book!

This book, like Sands, was really great. I sometimes feel like authors don't plan for their second book as much as they did their first, but that is not the case with this story. Kevin Nielsen does a wonderful job of expanding the world he developed for us in Sands. It was really exciting to see how the culture and people we knew were only a small part of a larger world. I can't wait to read the next one!

I liked the book, but the middle really dragged on and got hard to read. I found myself reading just to get it over with rather than because I enjoyed it. However, after things started to heat up about 80% of the way through, I was engaged in the story again. I would like to continue reading this series and look forward to the next one.

As with the authors first book SANDS, it takes several of the beginning chapters to get all the characters and story line together, but once it's all there it reads much faster and you start to formulate questions and get the answers a few chapters later. I am liking the series and look forward to the third book in the series.

Sands leaves you wondering how lhaurel would get through it all. Makes you wonder if Gavin has what it takes.
Sadly Storms is no better. Their journeys has just began. Nielsen focuses on the Rahuli as a people and really introduces them to the reader. If I didn't know any better, I would think he is about to do something with the Rahuli.
I'm taking a front row seat for that. Superb storytelling.

****I was given this e-book for an unbiased review****

This one took me awhile to finish....it was very slow moving and it took me awhile to actually get into it. Just like the first book there were about three different story lines going that intersected. There was a lot going on which makes me wonder why it was so slow moving. It wasn't until about chapter 17 that the action started to pick up. I was going to give this a 3 the entire way through up until the last couple of chapters. So I'd say it's more like a 3.5

The last couple of chapters set up the next book really nicely. It moved the action along faster than the rest of the book and made me want to read the next book to see what happens. I think part of the problem is that none of the main characters are endearing....there's no one to root for really, at least for me. The names are confusing in the beginning and when the story line switches to the Orinai in the beginning I felt like it took me awhile to catch on to what was happening.

The Orinai Samsin and Nikanor act like Loki and Thor (there's even a war hammer) and Lhaurel is a blood mage but sort of acts like a conflicted vampire. The description of the warren that they lived in reminds me of The Host. And once they explained about the Seven Sisters and the arena fighting for sport it sounded a lot like the Hunger Games.

There was a lot more one on one killing this time which was off putting....I didn't feel like Gavin needed to kill some of the people he did when Kaiden and his men found him....Then killing off a main character at the end....I have plenty of questions which I hope will be answered in the third book...

With all of the negative, like I said, it picked up towards the end and got really interesting to where I want to read the next book so that's saying something.
