By the 7th Century the Empire of the Romans had stood for a thousand years…
During those years the Empire faced myriad threats to its very survival, but none like this one. From out of Arabia they came. An enemy the likes of which humanity had never seen. A few at first, but now a countless horde.
Athos was forced by tragedy to leave his childhood home in Armenia. Now he is a member of the legendary Ironmen in Syria. Athos must face his inner demons and fight, or he may just lose everything he holds dear. Can he and his company succeed? The cost of failure is… the world.
I was born into a military family in the United States. At a very early age I was able to travel the world. One of the first places my father was stationed at was Germany. Europe was a magnificent land dotted with castles and history. This invoked within me first a curiosity about history, and later a passion. I became captivated with tales of history.
After my experience abroad, history was filed in the back of my mind. We returned to the United States and went about our lives. School, a trip to Italy with my Grandparents to become acquainted with my Italian cousins, and finally my own tour in the military took me to more wondrous places full of history the Middle East and Iceland. These new experiences helped bring the love of history to the forefront of my thoughts once again.
As life always does, living life got in the way of my passion. More school, and several jobs later history came crashing back to the forefront of my thoughts. I read extensively of several authors here on Goodreads. Some of my favorites being Gordon Doherty, Simon Scarrow, and Griff Hosker to name a few, but my real inspiration was Harry Turtledove - a master of alternate history. This time was different. This time not only did I love reading, but tales of my own began to form in my mind. For my first book, Scourge of Byzantium, I combined my love of history with a more recent passion the walking undead.
My mind imagined a world in which the infection did not take place in the modern world, but during the later Roman Empire or Byzantium as that nation is known. Imagine how much better equipped a Roman Army is to deal with this problem. Now imagine how much harder it is to kill a zombie wearing armor! I hope you enjoy my first tale about Athos and his company of friends as they deal with changes to their world.
I really enjoyed the book. Not only was it entertaining but had a lot of historical references in the story. Going to read the next book in this series.
What a great concept and it is very well written 😀 Without giving anything away, if you like books on the Romans an Zombies then this one is for you. Love the details concerning the day to day life of a soldier in the Byzantine army and his weapon's, the drill it brings it all to life and then throw in the undead lol what more can you ask for 😎
Finally a zombie tale that doesn't start the same way with the night watchmen knocking over a jar of bleach spilling it onto a table of a trial medication for gout causing the birth of undead hoards. With painful feet searching for food to ease the pain and itching in advertently causing the collapse of civilization. This was a different twist which I will not spoil but a interesting book worth the time to read. This tale ranged from humorous at times to a predominantly dark flavor. Balanced story kept the pages turning. My only thoughts where the book needed a little more development of world at the time and deeper knowledge of the main characters for the reader to connect or bond to. Looking forward to more adventures of the desert zombies!
Set in the 7th century this is a tale about Athos and his part in the 5th parthica (the Iron Men). There is a lot more history than zombies in this as it is setting the scene for more than one book. This depth of history makes it a refreshing twist and this is more about the life and times than the zombies.
