Dr. Weekes describes her proven approach to alleviating the stress suffered by patients in an anxiety state which is complicated by overwhelming panic at the thought of traveling alone or being in crowded places
Dr Hazel Claire Weekes MBE was an Australian general practitioner and health writer. She also had an early career as a research scientist working in the field of comparative reproduction. She is considered by some as the pioneer of modern anxiety treatment via Cognitive Therapy. She continues to be noted for her books on dealing with anxiety disorders. Many of today's anxiety self-help books continue to cite her work.
This book saved my life. For real. 16 years old and completely housebound ( I had quit school) I carried this book with me. There are my little notes and markings in the pages. I did everything she said. I Do Not have panic attacks anymore.
I read this back when I thought I was agoraphobic, but it later turned out I was autistic, not agoraphobic. Still, it gave me great insights in how to not be anxious when being among people.
It's fantastic that a book 1976 understands something so well that psychiatry still struggles to treat. If you have any kind of social anxiety, be it agoraphobia, autism, trauma or something else, I highly recommend this book.
This is a wonderful book for anyone who is battling with mental health or any type of anxiety. It would also be great for anyone interested in learning about Psychology or mental health. It was so interesting I highlighted and placed post-its all throughout the book because there were so many interesting things.
Dr. Claire Weekes was the kindest, most gentle therapist the world has ever known and it transpires in her books, just as much as it does in her videos.
