This is the story of a young boy visiting his grandparents. His grandfather ice fishes on Lake Winnipeg. When his helper is ill, Thor is roped into going with him. What I like about this book is that it provides a window into a way of life that my students here on the West Coast have no conception of.
This has been one of my favorite children's books so far. The story had lots of action, but the main character was relatable. For anyone in Saskatchewan and Manitoba wanting another great local read for their classroom, this is a good one. The illustrations are fun to follow as well. Some highlights: *the descriptions of the characters *the plot is predictable with some twists for excitement *the story demonstrates healthy relationships between children and adults *discussion between on-screen adventures (TV) and real-life adventures *cultural insight into Icelandic-Canadian way of life *science application on the characteristics of ice *teaching students safety on frozen lakes and rivers (relevant in all of Canada and Northern US states)
