While the character of the sea witch did not appear in the original Peter Pan novel, she has been used in a few of the Peter Pan retellings which focused on Captain Hook; so I was very much interested in seeing how Thompson would explain her origins and presence in Neverland and she did not disappoint.
When you think of mermaids from Neverland, you can be excused if the first few words that come to mind are "mean", "vicious", "dramatic", "evil". Nerida isn't any of that. She is kind, compassionate and loyal, and retains her goodness in spite of all that happens to her. It was easy to connect to her and I loved her by the end of the story.
The story is shown only through Nerida's point of view, so it mostly covers events that happen in the Never Sea, not Neverland. Also, most of the important events of this book start around halfway through Hook, so while this can be read by itself, I highly recommend that you read Hook first so you can understand what's going on.
This is a lovely story of a mermaid in Neverland, which is tragic but sweet and ends on a heartwarming note. I give it a rating of 4/5, and recommend it for anyone looking for a mermaid story or those who love reading about the different versions of Neverland.
