What do a stealthy synthetic plant, an eavesdropping sound curtain, and an invisible observer have in common? They are artificial agents working tirelessly in the crime-rife city of Red Calais for their ingenious Master. They wend their way through the cutthroats, cat burglars and con men of the greatest city of the core world called Idona, challenged by numerous obstacles. Yet it seems that their Master hardly notices the chaos his automated minions are creating…
I am a software engineer in Silicon Valley who dreams of otherworldly creatures, mysterious alien planets, and fantastic adventures. I'm also an indie author with over 150,000 paid sales and another 150,000 free downloads.
This might contain spoilers Part 1 Honestly I loved this part of the story, I thought it was told from a great perspective, but it was meant to introduce us to the agents and to the master himself, as an introduction goes, it was a bit long. I loved all that was there, but maybe it could have been a bit shorter. Part 2 I thought this part sounded like a nice premise to a pretty fun video. But just as it was starting to feel like each chapter was a carbon copy of the last, the story switch up on us a bit. Part 3 This was a fun part, and a very exciting read as I got pretty pumped about seeing what the aliens would do and what kinds of memories Matteau regained. It was not a let down.
Over all I liked the story and I thought that the master and his agents were great characters. I wish some of the other characters had a little more development so that I would have cared about them more. Fun read, would recommend.
I liked the premise, but I had a hard time keeping track of all the moving parts. The perspectives jumped often and to me that made it difficult. The characters all felt the same, not a lot of emotional attachment for me to care for them and there were multiple Android-like machines that had the same voice as the live characters.
I liked the fight to save an ancient alien race and the hidden elements between worlds of shared technology. The technology kept me reading; it was intriguing and unique, as were the alien race(s) that we were introduced to.
. o 0 O ("Am I reading a book about a tactical espionage houseplant? Oh, right, it's a McCloskey novel.")
So many mediocre books lately, I was once more starting to wonder if I've just read too much to actually enjoy any novels lately. Then I stumbled on this little gem. It's only $1, for some reason (and it's a full length novel), but it's better than any $15+ ebook I've picked up. Only thing it's missing is an eavesdropping microwave.
Plenty of interesting nonhuman lifeforms... and a very interesting alien species and civilization to explore as you follow an AI on its quest to
Adventure, deceit, thieves double crossing each other, even a little spice of romance -- with that signature McCloskey strangeness to keep things even more interesting. This was really fun to read and everything came together so nicely.
I have not sat down to read a book in years. This caught my attention because of the book summary - I am so happy that this book grew into more than just the agents hijinks (although those were very fun to read and imagine as they played out, too)!
I can only hope that Matthieu and Adrienne have a follow up book soon. This was a gripping, fun, fast paced adventure!

This book was downloaded and read in One night. The action was non stop. The described environments were brought to life. My minds eye saw it all so clearly. Excellent book I would recommend this to all my friends who love this genre. I will look for more from this author.☺
A blend of many different sci-fi elements from cyberpunk, Planetary zaibatsu and tech that fans of Gibson and Stephenson will love, along with aliens and adventures worthy of Bradbury, Simak and Heinlein. This is a page-turner, and Fine Work. I devoured this book, which left me impressed and perhaps a bit envious as well. Rich entertainment for a person so well read in this genre, and thus a rare treat indeed. Bravo!
Original story telling, excellent alien concept and visualization. I couldn't write a bad review because it would not be fair to the author for a well conceived and developed idea. Personally, I felt the beginning was a little slow but when I made it to the end I realized it was just right, congratulations to the author, I will look for more of his work which I hope it's just as good as the one on hand!
It was interesting enough for me to finish it and find out what happened so that earned it 3 stars. Otherwise it was hard at times as it was overly descriptive and wordy in how it was written. It read at times like how a child tells a story - "and then he said or did or thought this which caused her to say or do or think this..."
