Samoan Art and Artists: O Measina a Samoa

Rate this book
A broad survey of the Samoan arts has not been published since the 1930s. This volume presents a contemporary survey of art in Samoa, drawing on the extensive research base that exists and reintroducing this information in a refreshing and accessible text with extensive illustrations.

Samoan curator at Te Papa gives a comprehensive overview of various artforms in Samoa through the present day (early 2000s). Artforms here include a lot of material culture, and Mallon emphasizes that each continually adapted and transformed before and after European contact. Well documented and exemplified. Of particular interest are the profiles and short interviews with contemporary artists in each field.
