Range~Magpie Bridge~Return (858 pages) - the last three books in the epic science fiction fantasy saga by New York Times bestselling author, JA Huss, that spans five full-length novels and one novella.
Two years have passed since Inanna stole Junco away from Lucan. Two years of unimaginable pain. Two years of isolation, mutilation and torture. Two years of fear and loneliness in a morph tank. And that's not something you just get over, even if you are psycho-sniper, Junco Coot.
Tier is desperately trying to hold everything together as the avian prepare for the return of the High Order, but Lucan is still holding his secrets close and no is sure what will happen if Junco doesn't fulfill her role.
Tier, Lucan. Annun, Isten, Ashur, and all the players come together to make their final move in a game that spans thousands of years... but the end they so desperately want hinges on the shoulders of one insane girl with a rifle.
And while everyone knows what Junco is capable of now, no one can predict what she will do when she has to make that final choice.
J.A. Huss never wanted to be a writer and she still dreams of that elusive career as an astronaut. She originally went to school to become an equine veterinarian but soon figured out they keep horrible hours and decided to go to grad school instead. That Ph.D wasn’t all it was cracked up to be (and she really sucked at the whole scientist thing), so she dropped out and got a M.S. in forensic toxicology just to get the whole thing over with as soon as possible.
After graduation she got a job with the state of Colorado as their one and only hog farm inspector and spent her days wandering the Eastern Plains shooting the shit with farmers. After a few years of that, she got bored. And since she was a homeschool mom and actually does love science, she decided to write science textbooks and make online classes for other homeschool moms. She wrote more than two hundred of those workbooks and was the number one publisher at the online homeschool store many times, but eventually she covered every science topic she could think of and ran out of shit to say.
So in 2012 she decided to write fiction instead. That year she released her first three books and started a career that would make her a New York Times bestseller and land her on the USA Today Bestseller’s List eighteen times in the next three years. Her books have sold millions of copies all over the world, the audio version of her semi-autobiographical book, Eighteen, was nominated for a Voice Arts Award and an Audie award in 2016 and 2017 respectively, her audiobook Mr. Perfect was nominated for a Voice Arts Award in 2017, and her book, Taking Turns, was nominated for an Audie Award in 2018. Johnathan McClain is her first (and only) writing partner and even though they are worlds apart in just about every way imaginable, it works.
She lives on a ranch in Central Colorado with her family.
This whole series was made way more confusing than it needed to be. In an attempt to add mystery, the author only piled on confusion. The author really should have made a glossary at the beginning of every story sorting out all the factions and politics going on. There was no reason to keep all that hidden. I spent most of this series wondering who was who and who they were supposed to be with. I was lost and it's not pleasant to read a story without a grasp of what is going on at all. I get the need for their secrets, but all that confusion wasn't necessary. Lastly, telling J to kill one person, then expecting us to believe that she refused the order and instead killed the person she did? That made no sense at all. If Lucan would have talked to her like an adult and told her what she needed to do and why, it would have solved so much and the author could have kept that a secret only revealed when she took the shot. I just didn't buy what she tried to sell me. Lastly, while everyone called Junco insane, I pretty much just saw an insolent, tantrum throwing brat when she acted out. I also think the whole 6 demons destroying the world could have been left out completely without hurting the story at all. Maybe left a few more people and avians alive!
I will start by saying that I love JAHuss to death. I've read all her books and am a huge fan. I'm so glad I waited to read the Junco series because if they were my first intro to her books I probably would not come back. These books gave me whiplash. I was constantly in a state of confusion as who was who and their relation to what. I can best describe it as a schizophrenic read. Too many changes and they were too often to keep up. In the end I think maybe I'm just not a fan of sci-fi.
The Second Half Of This Fabulous Series Keeps You Guessing
This is the second volume in a two part edition of the series, containing the second three books. As it opens, more of Junco's history is explored while meanwhile, Lucan has just rescued her from Inanna, who held her for two years, morphing her mercilessly without a virtual. Lucan promises to love Junco for thousands of years and then disappears, while Tier is oddly absent upon her rescue. Again, Junco is left in the dark and doesn't ask key questions.
Junco's face has been in the news so she has no privacy in public, and Lucan has taken her to Gideon's well-guarded condo on a resort island. With little social interaction, after several weeks Junco loses Gideon and Sel and escapes the island. She returns to Dallas to visit yet another new man from her past (they only shared a kiss, but he invited her to stay with him and she regretted never returning). Hand and his family welcome Junco and give her what she needs to return to her home and her secret stash.
Tier eventually catches up with her and takes time out on ship for them to reconcile, but Junco continues to be confused and she doesn't trust anyone. When Tier returns to his task of setting up the seven towers around the world, causing death and destruction, Junco gets anxious and Sera talks her into leaving.
Junco feels more and more insane as the pressure builds for her to fulfill her destiny. Nobody, including Junco, knows if she will follow her last order. She discovers right before that her team members have discovered her and Tier's baby in the Stag - that she did indeed have a baby while in captivity, as she had once susoected. This pushes her even closer to the edge. She wishes she were dead, hates what she is, what she has done, what she has been forced to do. And she wants to kill the baby to prevent it from suffering as she did.
The storyline in his series is very complex, and the many mysteries and unanswered questions keep the reader looking for answers even though Junco herself usually prefers to be left in the dark. The large cast of characters is diverse and they have compelling stories.
I had a lot of problems with some of Junco's choices in the second and third books in this series. While she is very unstable in these last three books, her two years of captivity and her confusing and unhappy return go a long way to explaining her lack of trust.
The second book here is presented in Tier's POV, unlike all previous books which are in Junco's. The final book in the series is written form various points of view. This was necessary because Junco would not have been able to explain much herself. There is nothing lost by this shift. It pulls the story together by allowing the reader to get to know the other actors and see things from another angle. It enriched the overall story without taking anything from Junco.
In the end, most important questions are answered. There is a short HEA, although I felt something was missing because it didn't go into the ending for the entire cast of characters - only a few key players.
The last two books were emotional. Having gotten to know the characters so well, it is hard not be drawn into their story. There is so much on the line that dwarfs their individual circumstances, it is hard to see how they will ever work things out or find happiness, much less survive the end.
An epic fantasy science fiction that delves into the realms of Angels, Demons, Humans and AI's.
Junco Coot wants to be an normal girl, leading a normal life, falling in love, having children, pretty much what every girl on Earth will accomplish. For Junco though, this is all just a dream. From birth, Junco's life has consisted of training, shooting and killing, not much time for love and Happy-Ever-Afters. When she encounters Tier, an Avian from Amelia, her life takes a new turn. Who can Junco trust? Who is really on her side? And what does the future hold besides death and destruction?
Junco is an adorable character. I know this sounds strange considering what she is and I'm quite certain that many would not agree after reading the first three books, which is why it is imperative that all six books are read. She wants to be loved. She wants normal where only chaos has reigned. And most of all she wants Tier. She opens up her heart to be loved and gives her love freely hoping that it will be returned. Some call her gullible but I just think she was hopeful. Her relationship with Tier is strange, one minute they are trying to kill each other, then they are whispering words of love, but one thing is clear - they are made for each other.
I won't deny that this entire story was quite confusing. Do not read these books tired, you really don't want miss anything because book six brings everything together and all the little pieces of information, the different encounters, the deceit, the lies and the secrets makes sense. A beautifully epic tale set in a futuristic world where the choices of one girl could save the human race from the Apocalypse.
These book are not what I would class as traditional romance. If you are after lovey-dovey don't look here. If you want action, adventure, intrigue and a possible love connection that you are cheering for but not entirely hopeful it will last then you will love these books.
note to reader - some scenes within these stories are quite graphic - Be Warned!
This story is picks up right where it left off from the first omnibus and Junco has learned a lot, but she’s still learning and all I can say is hold on, because you’re in for one heck of a ride!
Again this is a sci-fi dystopian, well written story and the characters are well developed.
I am a hard-core romance reader, who really enjoys also reading mysteries that have some romance in them so, I am not a person who gravitates to other genres. Huss writing this story, with two huge omnibus books 📕, made this story a must read for me! It’s very underrated and more people should definitely give this a read.
I also eventually purchased the audiobooks for this story and I can tell you that J.A. Huss spared no expense with her choice of narrators for this book and their voices were incredible at bringing the characters to life.
I definitely recommend it for Teens, YA and Adult readers.
This was one crazy RolleRcoasteR of a ride! So many moving parts, so many scheming parties, it was easy to get lost in the fray, but Julie Huss weaves her web so intricately that all those threads do come together in a beautiful and fitting ending.
I loved the first three books a smidge more than these last three, but to finally get to the ending and see how all this madness ended was essential. I had to know how it all ended! I was not disappointed! I don’t always love switching POVs and that is probably why I loved this omnibus a little less than the first one, but I still loved it so yeah.
I am an avid reader of J A Huss’s work at any level, I love the dark and deep plot lines. I came in at Rook & Ronin, some years ago now. I’ve avoided Junco as it is badged as science fiction, I’m not sure why this put me off because most of her other work is a little off the planet! But after coming to an end of The Rumble and The Glory series I decided to indulge in this early work. And I’m so glad I did! If you have read some JAH then read some more,…. And if you’re about to dip a toe into her worlds then jump right in! You wont regret it! Unless your limit is bodice ripping yarns, then walk right on by😉
Of all the series in this genre this is the most involved, detailed and complicated I’ve read. And so so good. Too complex to describe but addresses love, self-discovery and acceptance, and persistence, despite overwhelming odds. I can’t imagine how JA was able to keep the story line straight. It’s a long series and I never felt like it was dragging or repetitive which happens a lot in long series. Thank you for writing this!
So I am a HUGE fan of JA Huss, and because of that I listened right to the end, but boy it was hard work. I am sorry I just didn’t like this series at all. I think it was the storyline, it didn’t garb me and because of that I couldn’t follow it. However this will not put me off Julie, she has so many amazing books, I am sure other will love this series, it just wasn’t for me.
I am so sad to have finished this book, but so happy with the conclusion. I still don't quite know what the heck is going on, but I know its amazing. The twist and turns are never ending but the ending Will leave you with a smile. Epic story and a must read for sure.
Ms Huss is a master when she is writing in her preferred passion! Thank you for the journey beyond the stars, and make us think about where we might’ve come from, who could’ve been instrumental in putting us here, and how we evolved into what we are now! Love your brain!!!!
Wow! There is so much going on in this story that it kept me guessing the whole time. It’s a lot to unpack but so worth it! Loved (is that the right word?) this world Huss created but I really missed an EOB to help me process!
Oh wow! What an epic ending to this thrilling series. The storyline is amazing and fast moving with never a dull moment. The characters are wonderful and exciting, both good guys and bad. It’s brilliant and the narrators are terrific!
I loved this series. I am sad to say goodbye. I enjoyed the characters and unexpected twist and reveals through out the series. I look forward to reading more from JA Huss!
At last some answers. I have to say that I feel one has to know j a huss's writing style in order to perservere with the length of these books ( or this series). J A only reveals twists and turns in 'real time' so to speak. A lot of perspectives are given by all vital characters and it all ties in to how reactions drive the plotline. Not to mention it kept me guessing and listening as to how it all plays out. There was 4 narrators in the final books which added vitality to the different characters and added some depth to each mindset. Like I mentioned earlier, it was a long listen to this total series and with each book the plot just thickens. There is very little reprieve and J A just pushes you further down the rabbit hole. I found it's not a story one can listen to with only half an ear as it's very easy to miss important revelations that explains how the plotline plays out. There was little romance and scant steam but the space aliens, the action and suspense, mixing in with mystery and angst, was enough to keep listening past a chapter or 2 they seemed to drag happenings to a minimum. Junco was an intense, complicated heroine and I was amazed at how J A managed to put her thoughts and actions on paper. There were times I so wanted to smack or shake her. By the end of the book I just knew things were going to work out. Although J A is always a suprise. If you enjoy this author then dive in. It's a space opera and I started listening to 'sick heart " which is dark and gritty. Shorter in length I got an understanding of a J A's unique writing style so I listened to junco with my mind open and welcomed the rabbit hole
RANGE Speechless. When you think you have all the answers… another plot is thrown into the mix and makes you question what the heck is happening. OMG there was so much going on in this book and I loved it! Junco is once again being broken by the lies people have told her and my heart just breaks along with her and everything she has been through. The emotional rollercoaster this book took me on had me begging for a happy ending for Junco and even Tier (hopefully together!). I can’t wait to see what happens next, especially after the way this one ended! 5 stars
MAGPIE BRIDGE I loved this little story with Tier and getting into his mind. But it left me with so many questions needing to know what happens next! I can't wait to get stuck into the next book and get those desperately needed answers, I miss Junco too! 5 stars
RETURN After the way the previous two books ended (especially Range) I desperately needed to know what would happen next. In true JA Huss fashion, you go through a rollercoaster of information and a journey you’ll never forget to get those answers at the end. And what a journey this last book was. Each new chapter had my mind racing because something new would happen that I needed to figure out. I loved that this book was told from multiple POVs, I enjoyed getting inside each of their heads at different moments of the story. And that ending?! I was so happy after reading that last little chapter that I didn’t want this series to end. 5 stars
Pretty great end to the series! I enjoyed the way mythology was interpreted to tell a modern story. I especially like that it was easy to follow along for someone who does not know anything about mythology.
I enjoyed the series overall, I just had some issues with the relationships Junco had with others, especially Tier. He (and some of the other men) used language like "darling, honey, hun, girl" to no end and it annoyed the heck out of me. In combination with the patriarchal society of the Avians and the general hypermasculine douchebaggery of most of the men in the series, it was all kind of meh. Also there was so much man on woman violence going on. If the relationship between genders in this fictional universe was more egalitarian, then I could see a way that Junco getting pushed around and pushing men around right back would be acceptable. However this universe is heavily patriarchal and the violence is pretty one sided.
The second omnibus has the last 3 books and wraps up Junco's story. And what a story it is.
I have read these books so many times and each time, my heart still races and I still find myself clenching my jaw and curling my toes because my adrenaline is going and I'm still anticipating what will happen next! And that's after 8 years and multiple rereads. This story pulls you in and takes every emotion you have and pulls it through the wringer. I laughed, I was frustrated, I was angry, and I cried. I have never cried while reading a book before. But I have all the feels for Junco. I named my cat Junco and she's staring at me now like I'm a loon, and I know I am. I realized I missed writing a review for this after I just left an audible one so I'm fixing that error. But my emotions are all over the place. Junco will do that to you. Don't say I didn't warn you.
Check out the audio too. Kristen Sieh is absolutely amazing.
They won the battle. For now. But Junco lost more than she can handle to get that job done. The ancient aliens are returning to Earth and their long-awaited prophecy is about to unfold. Lucan and his army need Junco to do her job if they have any chance of living through the ancient prophecy. They need her to follow directions and focus. But Junco's friends are dead-some of them at her own hand. Her home is gone, her mind is more unstable than ever, and ghosts from the past are haunting her. And now she finds out they've been lying to her? How could she ever trust anyone again? Can a girl who was born a monster feel loyalty and love? Or will she let them all die in the end? Books 4,5,6, completing Junco's journey, everything depends on Junco, will Luken die? Will Tier or will her and Tier get their if not a happy ending at least Junco's promised contentment. This was a good ending though somewhat unexpected, I did this series and would recommend it.
Love this series Range I love this series and can't put my kindle down. Who does Junco trust and who's lying and it just gets u guessing. I can't wait to read what happens next in this story. Amazing series I can't get enough of
The Magpie Bridge I was so excited to read from Tier's point of you. I loved to know exactly what has going thru is head in regarding Junco. I love the interaction with him and house and was cracking up laughing.. I can't wait to read the next and last book in this series
Return I really loved this series there was no thought the story wasn't going anywhere. I loved the guessing of who side everyone was on and the back story of Lucan. I wish this series didn't end. I would love more Junco and Tier, I didn't want it too end. Another amazing series from JA
I absolutely loved this whole series! You never knew what was going to happen from chapter to chapter. You had a main female character that kicked ass. There were aliens, mutants, Angels, machines, military, religion, end of world and just about everything you can think of in this book. There just wasn't a dull moment and it was brilliantly written!
My favorite series written by JA Huss. Did I mention I FLOVE ALL of her books! what a literary genius. Her stories are refreshingly different and keep you hooked from the first page. I could not get enough of Junco and cannot wait for her next story. Thank you soooo much JA Huss for writing us another book from this amazing story!!!
Just when you think Junco can’t get deeper in the manure…. She jumps in headfirst. This series grabbed me by the hair and dragged me along kicking and screaming. I have to admit, there are some parts that had me sobbing but I’m not going to spoil it. I’m so glad I discovered this series on Audible. I am going to purchasing the paper version sometime this year. It’s too good not to have.
