A desperate billionaire, willing to do anything to have her. A sexually frustrated virgin, only willing to give him one thing. A second chance at love both are afraid to believe in.
With her father about to lose his house and her brother about to go to jail, Lara Derrick can find no other way to save them then to marry her detested, and up-to-now rejected, suitor. Dante Casartelli might be every other woman’s dream—tall, dark, and insanely rich—but his actions against her in the past and now, in the present, can only ensure her continued animosity.

Forced to be his wife, Lara is determined not to end up being something far worse: pregnant by him. Although the man tries to use his sexual prowess in bed to convince her their marriage is worth saving, she can’t trust him or his word.

Dante, however, is intent on winning back the girl he fell for long ago and he’ll use every trick that comes his way to gain her trust and love once more. Because to lose Lara again will break his heart forever.

Wife By Force is a standalone story with a happily-ever-after ending. It’s part of the exciting International Billionaires series—books that take well-loved stories and place them in exotic locales. If you yearn for a brooding Heathcliff who wants only his true love, then take an amazing journey from a dazzling Italian villa, through the heart of Florence and even to a luxury beach house in Barbados.

Caro LaFever is a master of what I consider good old fashion Harlequin style romantic, antagonist angst. Her International Billionaire series seems to confirm this every time I read one of its books. Though I must admit Wife By Force seemed overdone in regards to the heroine’s anger and unforgiving behavior towards the hero, who is trying to make amends/win her heart after an almost decade long separation.

**spoilers possible**

Yes, my fellow romance book-loving friends, I get she was hurt when he rejected her affections at her 17 year old birthday party. But, honestly, now that she is nearing 30 surely she should realize why. Let’s see, mainly because she was still a minor back then, and he was 24! That was not just an age gap but a huge maturity difference between them, folks. With an ailing father and duty calling him to make the family business a priority, our handsome hero also knew neither family would accept their relationship at that point in time. Of course, it would have been helpful if he had simply just explained it to her, instead of deliberately hurting her to push her away. Even arranging for her to go to school in England.

What he wasn’t counting on was for her to be manipulated into marrying a man 20 years her senior a year later, which, by the way, only proves this girl lacked sense and sensibility in regards to romantic relationships. Wouldn’t you agree? Surely, there are some heads out there nodding in agreement.

Though keeping tabs on her from afar, she’s returned to Italy a widow with an excess of marital baggage due to an implied abusive, controlling marriage with a man who left her a virgin. Now I’m sensing some eye-rolling over that disclosure, because that’s exactly what my initial reaction was. Sure, it was explained. But really? I just didn’t buy it.

She’s got her walls up and is as equally determined to reject him as he is to win her over. These two go at it, folks, to the point I found her verbal barbs quite tiresome and, frankly, mostly nonsensical and downright bitchy. Honestly, by mid-way I found myself thinking this woman has quite the active imagination in her OTT unbased, hate filled hero bashing verbage. It was then I started to suspect the inevitability of him giving up on her and then her wanting him back. Poor guy, his karma is going to be wishing he had not pursued her in the first place!

If you haven’t guessed it yet, let me be point blank. I couldn’t force myself to finish this book. I couldn’t stand this annoying, hateful heroine. In fact, she ruined this storyline for me so much, even though they marry at 50% into it, I couldn’t stand another moment of her cutting remarks, back and forth, whiplash character. The hero now has my condolences for his unfortunate attraction to her. Sure, I’m certain they get their HEA, but she really doesn’t deserve one.

If you aren’t into second chance romances with a determined hero willing to put up with verbal abuse, you’ll want to skip this, as well. Otherwise, read at your own risk. I’ll eventually try another book in this series, after my residual anger/disgust for this heroine dissipates. I’m thinking that is going to take quite a while.

Title: Wife By Force, Author: Caro LaFever, Pages: 311, stand-alone but part of a series, HEA, second chance romance, virgin heroine, unlikeable heroine, determined to get the girl hero.

When Lara returns to Italy, after years of living in England, the last person she wants to face is her childhood crush Dante Casartelli. Unfortunately for her, Dante has other plans. Plans that involve winning her love and making her his wife.

My favorite thing about this book was that Dante never stopped loving Lara ever since their childhood. While he might have given her the impression that he had no romantic interest in her, it was always with her best interests at heart. Letting her move away and marry another man broke his heart but he felt like she needed to live and love on her own terms.

Lara still sees Dante as the arrogant, self-assured man she knew from her youth. With confidence, money and power Dante can have any woman he wants, but he seems to only have eyes for Lara. Shaped by the events of the last few years, Lara doubts his intentions and fights him every step of the way.

As these two enter into an unusual arrangement Dante hopes to win Lara trust and love. But can she ever trust a man who coerces her into marriage?

Oh my god... this book. It is so naive.
The use of italian is absolutely unnecessary, even frustrating since it is filled with mistakes. Also, the fact that the female protagonist is dislexic and makes such a big fuss of it is annoying.
The romance and they way the protagonists act and think is unrealistic.

My Thoughts
I found that the length of Lara's marriage and how she remained a Virgin quite weird. Even though Dante was watching her I don't understand how no-one picked up on how manipulaive her ex was. The story would've been believable if Lara hadn't been married for so long and atempted to leave.

Dante was in love with Lara but sent her away to England for her own good. Rejected, she got married to Gerry (who was as as 20 years older than her, possibly gay) until his death 10 years later. During this time Dante has her watched and followed. After her husband dies she returns to England and then Dante makes his moves to get her to marry him in order to save her family and so he can have children. The story deals with Lara's frustration over being controlled etc and slowly realising the real Dante.

I really liked the epilogue however and would've loved to have read more.

This title sure is misleading when Lara set the trap on her own and then walked into it. What exactly was Dante to do? Ignore the gift that was so willingly placed at his feet? I think not. Dante sure is overbearing and controlling but one sentence made me go "aww". Lara throughout this book insults Dante steadily and doesn't see anything from his POV. Usually I don't like it when the female has to go after the male but in this situation it was perfectly warranted. Yes, Dante did do some questionable things but everything was out of love but Lara misconstrued everything and made herself miserable. I'm glad Dante got his happy ending though complete with his bambinos.

The first 11 chapters was hard to get through. This story had a lot of inner dialogue. Some thoughts of the characters benefits the story, but too much seems to make the story drag for me. Lara had been married before, and is now a widow. When Dante and Lara finally made love she was a virgin.

It was intended to be a very sweet story. Dante was Lara's first crush as a young girl. He liked her too. At the time he knew he was doing the right thing, when he let her go. He didn't fight for her. He allowed her to marry another man, without telling her how much he loved her. Years later, they have a second chance at love.

Lara showed only hostility, towards her husband for most of the book. She made him pay for sins of her first husband. She realized she loved Dante, but by this time it was almost too late. She had drove him away. He left, and she had to find him. She couldn't very well confess her love if she couldn't find him.

I did finish this book, but this was a hard book to keep reading. I would say it was worth the read, but this is a honest review, so to tell the truth, this is a book not worth reading.

I don't do this often but this isn't your typical series. Caro LeFever does an incredible job of writing gutwrenching yet endearing characters and storylines. Some books will have you yelling at one of the characters through your sobs. Others will have you crying for their shared pain and the love they take too long to recognize. I definitely wish these books were less sexual but I can skip those parts and still enjoy these stories! THIS SERIES IS FABULOUS AND YOU WON'T BE SORRY!

Series Verdict: 4.5 Stars

Truthfully, I didn't like this one at all. The writing style of the author was good and I will probably read another of her books in the future. What I found irritating about this particular book was the heroine. I didn't like her at all.
While I could understand the difficulty in separating your past experience in a bad relationship with a new relationship, she went way over the top because she actually created her own downfall. She misunderstood everything he said and every action to the point that if she was real, I think I might have knocked her upside her head. On the other hand, the hero was driven and quite likeable up until the heroine decided that she had misjudged him and handled everything poorly. After that, he became overly emotional, misunderstanding everything she said and suddenly, very insecure. It seemed like a total contrast to his personality.
By the time they worked things out and fixed their relationship, I was like meh!

While I enjoy LaFever's writing style and I am not as appalled by the utter macho male heroes that roll over everyone and anyone as I might be had she less of a grip on the story, I did not enjoy this second book in the series nearly as much as the first. It is still and OK read and pleasant enough, but the back stories did not make too much sense to me so I could not really subscribe to many of the "struggles" of the heroine. Still not a bad book.
Also a little more tight editing or one additional round of edits would seem beneficial - I already had the same impression with the first book in the series. Some very repetitive imagery (in this case about 10 instances of getting through his "hide" in the first half and some almost identical repetitive paragraphs as well as occasional typos)

Constant turmoil

This was one of the best written books that I have read in a long time. It left me wanting more. The interactions between Lara and Dante were maddening. I wanted to scream at her for being such a shrew and hit him for being so stupid. Thank goodness the sex was good or they would have never made it to the end. The constant building of emotion. It was like the ocean coming toward and then going away, calm then angry. I was exhausted by the end of the book. Thank you for a beautiful love story.

Read the given synopsis to find out what the book was about. It gets to the heart of the story.

My reactions: At first, I really, really hated Dante. To me he was nothing better than an obsessed stalker who wanted to control Lara through every aspect of her life. As the story went on, I still thought he was an a*****e, but started to understand a little more why he reacted & acted the way he did.

This was ok. The h was so annoying I could barely finish it. the H was just to wimpy for me.. he was supposed to be rich and powerful but kept putting up with an annoying chick.. I did finish only cause I had to know how it ended which was pretty weak like the rest of the story.
I like authors writing cause she draws you in but this one just was ehh. I will read more since I got them for free.

Dante was rich sexy and not crazy handsome but a man in love and with a plan. This story was pretty good and I loved how he did little things to make her happy and let her see how much he loved her. He waited so long for her that when she finally came back to Italy he couldn’t hardly control himself around her. Lara was nice but there were times I wanted to shake her. At the end one small mistake was going to destroy what they’d both come to feel for each other. I recommend this book.

Great Love

This was a great love story. It is a book you will not want to put down. Lara and Dante share a life of enduring love. Dante loves her so much he moves mountains to make her dream of a school for "special" children a reality. Lara finally realizes the depth of his love for her. Very well written.

I enjoyed this book. The characters were so real and their love beautiful. Dante proved his love for Lara again and again. Yes, I do recommend this book. Truly an enjoyable love story with a little mystery thrown into the mix. I look forward to reading more novels by this author.

I loved this story

This book was well written and detailed a love hate story between Lara and Dante. I liked the surrounding characters, but they could have been developed a bit more. Also, the first half of the story dragged just a tiny bit and could have been shortened. But otherwise, the characters made decisions that seemed realistic.

I loved this storyline. The baggage Lara carried from her first husband brought such tension her new marriage. The duality of Dante made me think of my husband. I truly loved the ending. Thank you for a wonderful book!

Intriguing

So much anger and passion along with a vulnerability. Emotions can be felt throughout and you find yourself hoping the heroine will figure it out before it's too late.

Laura is regaining her life and freedom after a dismal marriage. At a friend's wedding she's not prepared for the encounter with her childhood best friend and the man who destroyed her heart years ago.

Dante is the head of his family and the family company, he is accustomed to people deferring to him and never being able to let his guard down. With his legendary control he thinks he's ready to see Laura, the woman he has loved since he was a young, and be able to keep his composure. But, can two passionate people with so many misconceptions between them keep their emotions and tempers under control?

From love to hate to love Laura and Dante battle it out through these pages! Without giving anything away, there was so much baggage between these two, and they certainly punished each other for them. As I was reading I was swept away in the back story of their childhood and then bounced around the tale of their present. From one minute to the next I wasn't sure who I wanted to smack up side the head the most! But the frustration was part of the story's charm. Before I knew it I was completely invested in the outcome with these two! The author does a marvelous job of grabbing your hand and taking you on one crazy emotional ride. The characters are fully developed and are so easy to become enthralled with, even the secondary characters are interesting and add the perfect finishing pieces to this story. In true romance novel style the end rushes past with great overtures and grand displays. This is a wonderfully emotional, passionate, sexy and heart aching romance! I would recommend it to anyone who loves a romance that's worth the wait, or simply a romance that will keep you enthralled till the very last word!

Lara Derrick had been badly hurt and still was carrying the heavy baggage. Her self-confidence had been damage, still feeling the rage of her lost she needed to harder her heart until she healed completely. When she met Dante Casartelli again after twelve years trying to mend her heart, she felt like she would crumble. She saw him as she remembered him controlling and exerting his will but she would not succumb. She had secrets and pain to hide. She felt stronger and smarter now and she would fight him. Dante Casartelli had given up his freedom because after his father’s death he was The Casartelli. No other choice for him. His duty was his family and the business. For Lara he did what he had to do, the honored thing. Now, at last, she was back and he would try again. Intense the feelings, the emotions, the attraction between this two characters that were affected by the circumstances at a given time. Dante bad choice of words, Lara youth feelings and hasty decisions brought despair to both of them. Liked Dante’s insight process, how the author presented his unconditional love for Lara and suffered Lara’s doubts about herself. Good pace, sex, some suspense and much emotion. Really liked the story.

Wife by Force by Caro Lafever

Laura Derrick has returned home to open her school for children with disabilities. She has just started to regain her life and freedom after the death of her controlling husband. At a friend's wedding she's not prepared for the encounter with her childhood best friend and the man who destroyed her heart years ago. Dante....

Dante Casartelli who has always loved Laura but sent her away years ago is now head of the family company. He is accustomed to having control of everything and everyone so when Laura's father and brother run into trouble he decides to step in and help. But to Laura she feels she is being controlled again, but marries Dante to help save her family home. Dante feels this is the only way to getbLaura back into his life and bed.

I felt Laura had way too many issues for me...I agree that Dante needed to pull back a little but Laura really irritated me by always jumping to conclusions. Lots of fighting then back to love!!!!!

I have read better books by Caro Lafever..

I have been looking forward to reading this book for a few months and I am really disappointed in it. It had all the makings of an MKP classic but instead it just left me glad I got it free.

Lara was stuck on her first marriage for too long. I got why she was hesitant but her attitude made it hard to sympathize.

Dante was so into her, loved her/ creepily "watched over" her/ refused to marry anyone else for years and yet with everything she did/said it was a very stupid misunderstanding that made him leave. Then she had to figuratively and literally chase him! When he literally started moving faster I didn't know whether to laugh or hurl my Kindle across the room.

That's a giant no in my book and I don't care what the heroine has done. It made him seem silly and illogical, which was supposed to be Lara's gig.

They get an HEA but it was not even kind of believable (maybe the toast will be burnt and he'll pull a Usain Bolt).

I hate that this wasn't good.

Living in a world dominated by the men in her life, Lara Derrick longs for the chance to make her own decisions. Wife by Force was given to me in exchange for an honest review. Lara has dealt with emotional abuse and lack of confidence most of her adult life. A decision made in a moment of weakness has left her broken, bitter and focused on living on her terms. But once again circumstance places her in a situation that is beyond her control. This time she won't cede defeat. She won't go down without a fight. Too bad the enemy is the man that has held her heart from the start and contributed to her pain. This time Dante wants it all. Lara's heart and body, failure is not an option. Ms. LaFever's stories are full of sparks. Wife by Force has drama to hold the attention. Romance to steal your heart and emotions that are irresistible balls of heat.
