Kinky pony play set in 1907,only these two Authors would come up with this.Loved it!

Firstly it's by two of my favourite M/M Authors...
And
Secondly it's a Historical M/M.One of my favourite genres and,in my opinion,there aren't enough of them out there.

Erik Dal is a powerful man in Bylondon and to say he's got a particular kink Is putting it mildly.
Erik wants to train Reuben to be his Prize Stallion.And yes,there's harnesses,tails,a stable,straw and a whole lot of kink going on here.I feel as though I'm repeating myself a bit here because this is the second BDSM book I've read recently that totally worked for me(and,trust me this isn't normally my thing).And,again,the reason it worked was down to the writing and characters.
It's told only from Reuben's pov and I found him quite fascinating.He's such an innocent character in a way and it was definitely difficult to read at times.
It's not romance,at this stage,but very erotic.I'm sure this won't be for everyone but I'm already reading book two and loving it.
Highly recommend for fans of these Authors and anyone who likes their M/M books very kinky...

This is totally not myself, I'm a good girl, I swear!
Definitely, this is not a book for everyone. I must admit 6 months ago I'd have said this book wasn't for me, either. Every time I saw its cover, I scrolled down quickly because it was too out of my comfort zone. But you see, I read The Darker Side of Trey Grey and it had ONE pony play scene. Not that explicit, but enough for curiosity to bite me. Furthermore, after The Pet Shop I thought I could handle human ponies, yeah?
First of all, the world building is astonishing. I'm not fond of zombies but this book gives another perspective of it all. We don't have the little group running away looking for a safe place and one by one being left behind after turning into zombies. We are in the beginning of the 20th century and society has survived in isolated cities with an unhealthy air and population problems.
Every detail is used for the sake of the environment, not just conveniently "invented" for the MCs' actions, but independent as its own without taking much of the plot. We get some clues of the general situation but never enough to get the whole attention from the story. It's a great supplement and it's the perfect setting for sinful activities to be openly displayed in an era when everything should be taboo.
Make a note this book is more erotic than romantic. Better face it since the beginning. BUT don't let that label fool you. If you are seeking a novel with lots of sex and no emotion, you better not read it. Because since the very first page you are trapped and closer to the last one you fall in love with Erik and Reuben/Copper.
There is violence. There is slavery. There is dub/non con. There is punishment. There is Stockholm Syndrome. On the other side, there is affection. There is teasing. There is excitement. There is freedom. And there is a reward. And in the end there is something much more important. I can't wait to talk about the second book. I just can't get rid of these two when I'm not with them during their kinky interplay. A bond forms between them and feelings grow.
Yes, most of it pushed my limits but didn't cross them. Saying it expanded my limits is more like it. There was a mix of perversion and playfulness that I found irresistible. The situation would make you hyperaware and wary but that awaking of your senses would also let you realize the provocativeness of the shameless scenes is exciting and liberating.
Copper is not a man, is a priced stallion, and in treated as such. As he learns to know his place in the relationship, being at the mercy of his powerful Master, he also discovers that he doesn't totally reject it but also seeks the warmth in his Master's hands, which are the only ones that can give him comfort and make him feel safe. As long as he fulfills his Master's wishes, there is nothing to fear and he will feel whole and happy and get the best care he has ever had in his whole life.
Because Erik doesn't allow disobedience, but his hand can be kind and gentle, too. As well as his lips. Although the POV is Copper's you can see glimpses of Erik's longing and desire to be loved (and to love).
I'm pleasantly surprised with this one. It reached my heart and stayed. I truly didn't expect such a tie with this story. It goes without saying that I needed to have #2 in my hands immediately after.

5 Thrilled Stars cos I love this fuck-horse-slave-thing. It makes me tingly all over!
I am pleased that Fear is not some cocktease ponyplay book. The human pony here is for real not the kind of dom/sub play session to get each other off. Fear comes with all sorts of delightful pony get-ups like tail plugs, halter, harnesses, bit gag and a horse mane haircut and various other pony training devices. What's more exciting is the presence of a groom and a firm owner who wasn't shy on dishing out punishments to a deserving pony. The story has subjugation of a young man with mild humiliation and degradation. And the protagonist had to endure whole lot of torments on his body and soul to be transformed into a mere pet, a plaything of a wealthy tyrannic crime lord.
THE STORY & CHARACTERS
Reuben was a down on his luck poor baker's son who was gradually reduced to the status of a pet horse by a manipulative man he was now forced to call his master. No matter how hard he resisted, Erik always has the right punishment to cure him of his disobedience. Erik is a fascinating character to me. I think he is a very good psychological manipulator (check out the link, he ticks almost all the boxes). He is such an eccentric, he baffles both Reuben aka Copper (his pet name now) and me. Copper struggles to understand his master in his effort to avoid those devious punishments he fears so much. Unfortunately this is a tough thing to do as Erik is much like Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Poor Copper, his days are spent tip-toeing around his master.
Copper's master has a strong kink for all things equestrian. The choice of an equine themed home decor in his house is a great example aside from his deviant habit of keeping humans as pet horses. He is a shameless debaucher who derives his sexual fulfillment through bedding two-legged horses. On the other hand, Reuben was a closeted gay feeling shameful of his sexual orientation and would try his best to repress it. Which is why he found being stuck as a pet to a perverted handsome master has its own merits. It was liberating to be able to enjoy his guilty pleasure minus the guilt factor since he has no say in whatsoever perverted games his master forced upon him. Besides that he does enjoys being pampered, have his every needs taken care of and receiving praises lavished upon him which felt real good. His master is actually kind and fair when he is a good horse. He was cherished as a prized stallion and was doted on by both his master and groom. Only all these good things comes with a hefty price -- his total lost of freedom and his dignity as a man is at risk. Could he give up all this for a taste of luxury?
As days goes by, Copper learned that the best way to stay pain-free and enjoy more guilt-free sex is to act like a real horse his master had wanted him to be. He would whinny and nuzzle his master affectionately to gain his approval and hope for rewards. I love it when he does that. <3
"I don't! I never lie! I am a very honest horse!" Reuben tried being funny again and nuzzled Erik's cheek. His master's expression softened at the caress, and Reuben felt Erik's hands circling his waist.
Me thinks Copper is damn cute when he is a fine and obedient horse. I would want him for myself if I could. I'll dote on him and give him all the sugar cubes he could eat then make him run on the treadmill till he drop. ∋━━o(｀∀´oメ）～→
WHAT I LIKE MOST
I adore the angst and the hurt-comfort thing going on with Copper and his master and also with Jack his groom who dotes on him. I love that the author knows how to dish out exciting sexual tension. Copper was so torn between liking the sexual attention and loathing his positive reactions to it. He felt ashamed of his weakness. Erik is such a beast when it comes to feeding his carnal urges, he has no qualms advertising his sexual desire for his male pet horse even with an audience. I applaud him for embracing his kink so proudly. I heart Erik (｡♥‿♥｡) Ample focus on the ponyplay part. I enjoyed Copper's pony training very much and loves how firm and authoritative his master was throughout his training. Copper's master may be strict but he does not neglect Copper's pleasures. I also like how Copper gradually adapts to his pet status in Erik's household. His reluctance and angst was a divine feast to me.OVERVIEW
Fear was a bravely written ponyplay erotica that is very much dedicate to pet play. It was truly fascinating to watch the bonding of this pair of master and pet. They seemed to be made for each other. The story was rather sweet and funny. Most importantly, it was hot as hell. My body and mind took much pleasure in reading it. No kidding, I was tingly all over and loving every moment of it. *bliss*
I admit that there are some minor editing issues here and there maybe because mine was an advance review copy. Yet I am glad it did not affect my level of enjoyment. I am very proud of the K.A. Merikan team for nailing this theme perfectly and I can't wait for the next installment of this thrilling ponyplay trilogy. I need to know if Reuben has truly submitted to his tyrannic master. Please don't make me wait too long.
Lastly I wish to commend the authors for not skimping on the word count just because the book was part of a serialization. In my humble opinion, Fear is a full-fledged novel and worthy of it's price tag.
If you are a true fan of ponyplay and had always wished to get more than a glimpse of it from the books you read, then you will love this one for sure. Not only did it not shy away from the subject, it stays focused on it as well. This point alone already made it a rare gem.

Set in an alternate universe where the plague has given way to the rise of zombies and the fall of civilization. Safety keeps people behind the walls of London for only the brave or the stupid wander beyond. Or those looking to make a good profit.
Reuben has been looking for something better. He wants things and he either can't have them or can't find them. He puts himself in some dangerous situations, but then the bottom rung pretty much assures that anything or anyplace else would be a step up and taking a chance, he gambles.
And loses.
He never had many choices, but now even those few are gone. Suddenly, finding himself in world he couldn't even imagine Reuben starts on the journey to become Copper. There are perks and struggles he faces as he learns to be Master Erik's show stallion--to accept his role, his place and his desires.
While the setting and some of the scenes are gruesome, the story itself has a sweetness to it. Copper is a prized stallion and therefore treated as such, but he is expected to be an obedient one. So while this is a story that becomes more loving as it goes on and Copper and Erik bond; it is not a gentle one. Erik is firm, but never unduly cruel. In fact, there are several instances where you realize how gentle of heart Erik truly is.
To be honest, it's pretty darn hot. There's a couple scenes that definitely turned my crank and Reuben's from the way Erik played him. Erik's a hedonist and he takes his pleasures, but he gives them, too. HAWT. You know, like take a personal break or maul your significant other HAWT. That's the only willing reason to stop reading.
This story ends at point where Copper has cleared a hurdle and is ready to progress to the next stage, one that's been hinted at. So the HFN is great, but I really want the sequel, now. Trust me there's some pretty tempting things waved in front of us.
There are some kinky elements, but they are moderate. No extremes. This is more forced submission with dub con moments than non con. There is also pony play, mild humiliation, fisting, and caning.

Reuben Wark was a poor baker’s son who tried to make the best of his lot despite feeling the anger and resentment of his father’s wrath, and knowing he could never make his father proud. Being poor in London in the early 1900’s while otherworldly creatures stirred about added to Reuben’s paltry life but also coming to terms with his preference for men was an embarrassing admission for him. It isn’t until Reuben trusts a friend to earn extra money when he finds himself captive in a foreign world.
“Let me get this straight.” Reuben furrowed his eyebrows. “I pretend I’m his fuck-horse-slave-thing, and he treats me right and gives me food for doing almost nothing?”
Erik Dal of Bluefinger is a man to revered and feared in Bylondon, the outer lawless community run by gangs and privilege. With eccentric and exotic equine tastes, Erik proudly acquires a new ginger stallion for his stable whom he aptly names Copper. Having been on the cusp of death’s door, Reuben/Copper, is thankful for his reprieve but even in his wildest thoughts he could not have imagined what his new owner had in mind for him.
“My dear Copper, you are a raw diamond, one that just needs a bit of a firm hand to shine.”
Upon arriving to his new home, Reuben soon discovers the perversions in Erik’s world and he must accept his new position as a prized possession or suffer the punishment. The shock of being a man’s pet is overwhelming to Reuben, as he is paraded around naked with a horse tail butt plug, but more than the objectification, Reuben is also humiliated because he feels guilt of enjoying sexual pleasure with a man. Knowing he has no real choice in his submission, helps to alleviate some of Reuben’s guilt, but the constant fear of the unknown and his need to please continually tests him.
During Reuben’s introduction and training as a pony, he undergoes lessons and his body is primed to make him a stronger stallion. As he is trained to please his master, Reuben becomes at odds with his feelings toward Erik. Trying to earn the pride and love that he didn’t experience with his own father, Reuben does his best to win over Erik and to secure his own safety. For the first time in his life, he is being treated with tenderness, fed with rich food and getting groomed daily but he wants to be more than just a pet.
“Big, buff, strong, but with a gentle heart. I need all of those things.”
In starting Fear, I wasn’t completely sure what to expect other than reading about how a Reuben is transformed into a stallion. However, the dynamic between Reuben and Erik is quite magnetic, as both are seeking what they couldn’t normally get based on their own circumstances. While Erik is no angel, he seeks as much comfort in Reuben as Reuben craves from him, providing an unexpected dimension of affection. Knowing Reuben can easily overpower Erik (without a guard present), adds to the captor/captive psychological element as well. I love how Erik is unabashedly open about his sexual proclivities and this forces a battle within Reuben’s own mind.
With Fear as the first book of this trilogy, the foundation is set with Reuben completing the initial phase of his indoctrination into Erik’s kinky world but questions still remain and outside elements are percolating that may affect all that has been established.
This author (writing duo), K.A. Merikan, has been on my radar for sometime now and I’m glad to finally immerse myself into their world. The time period of London in the early 20th century with the added element of steampunk is the perfect backdrop for this tale of erotic pony play. These writers can certainly craft a story with vivid imagery, dynamic characters and dark romance.
For those looking to step out of the safe and cozy world of vanilla, I recommend Fear.

I have to tell you when this book came up for review I jumped on it like it was on fire and I was the only source of water on the planet. Why did I choose this book, you ask? Ummm PONIES!!!!!!!!!! I admit it I've had a bit of a(n)obsession fascination with pony play since reading Her Grace's Stable.
I'll be the first to tell you zombies are not my thing. If one more person tells me I have to watch The Walking Dead, bad things will happen. However my zombie aversion wasn't the problem I had with this book. The zombies are more window dressing than main attraction. No, the problem I had with this book is lack of focus. There are more plot lines left dangling in this thing than my dog's rope toy after he'sshredded played with it.
For a book that clocks in at just over 200 pages, I'm racking my brain in an effort to give a bit of my own blurb. So, in lieu of a summary let me just give you a little snippet of what reading Fear was like, a peek inside the inner workings of my mind, if you will.

Really. Nothing happens. None of the above possibilities were explored hence the character development suffered. I couldn't tell you a thing about either of these characters that isn't cursory or that wasn't covered in the blurb. The same goes for the world building. I think they did a nice job with making the dialogue authentic and giving each of the characters their own unique voice.
Reuben/Copper gets bamboozled into becoming Erik's stallion and from then on it's Reuben refusing or acting out then whining to Erik. Erik then punishes Copper, sometimes excessively so. Copper whines and apologizes; they have sex. Lather, rinse, repeat. At about 75-80% I enjoyed where the pony play went, but other than that it was a boring and disappointing read.
Reuben has some great one-liners. He really isn't very bright though, but I will say he does a fair job of adapting and I think he would make a great pony for a sane dominant. But, like I said, Erik is a sociopath so if anything this is an HFN/waiting for the other shoe to drop.
The fashion is described impeccably-all that leather… *growls* I do think these authors have talent. I saw no egregious errors, but they need to work on plot development in my opinion.

Well, that was one unique read! Zombies and pony play! Yup, anything is possible. I am not into pony play or any kind of animal role playing so I had huge doubts about this book but my curiosity finally got the best of me. The story was a little out of my comfort zone but I don’t regret reading it.
I loved the steam punk setting and the story was well-written, but I had problem relating to the story and characters, especially Erik. He was… OFF!
Honestly, the story finally came into focus when I finished it and read the “About the author” part and realized this story is based on this belief that even some villains deserve their happy endings.
Overall, definitely not a book for everyone, but well-written and interesting. To exploring new horizons!

Animal play is so NOT my thing! I said the exact same thing a few months ago, after reading The Cattery. It might be that K.A.Merikan is my favorite author duo (because honestly, I can't imagine reading these stuff by someone else), or just that I'm in denial and have yet to embrace my inner deranged self.
Either way, The Copper Horse is a unique book. The characters, the plot, the secondary cast, the world building. The world building, everyone!
The authors built this amazing alt historical world in 1907 London. It's no secret that the Victorian/ Edwardian era is my favorite period to study, especially when the focus is on London's working class and poor population living in the slumps. Reuben belongs in this category. The twist here is that we 're twenty years into the zombie Plague. The only safe place is inside London's city walls. And then there's Bylondon. Weird things happen there...
Reuben is abducted and transfered in Bylondon. There, he will be trained to be Erik Dal's horse, his precious copper stallion. Insane and perverted Erik. Bluefingered and gorgeous in leather Erik. Erik who beats and kills, and after a while plays pick-a-boo. Cruel when betrayed, but gentle and caring when loved Erik.
This book is all about submission, battle of wills, and mindfuck games. Reuben must forget his previous life, and become Erik's pet. He must please him, and in return he will have everything he missed while living in London's dirty slumps. Eventually, Reuben submits. But why did I feel like he is the one who has the upper hand now?
I could say that this book pushed all my boundaries (because animal play, violence between the MCs, dub-con), but I don't know if it would be accurate. In reality, it feels like a whole different thing than what I'm used to. A category of its own.
In the end, Reuben conquers his Fear. I can't wait to see him conquering Pride too.

I have a feeling some people might think I posted this review for the wrong book when I say what I'm going to say, seeing as the title is "Fear", it's set in an apocalyptic world and to top it all off, it features pony play very prominently... But this was actually really cute. As in, huge grins and surprised laughter kind of cute. I'm not crazy, I promise.
There's something about reading a slave being trained into submission that makes me all tingly and happy inside.
That's depravity for you.

How does a zombie plague and pony boy fetish fit together in early 1900s London? It oddly combines together quite well.
In FEAR, K.A Merikan bring to light the underbelly of London slums. Reuben is a son of a baker. He's hit his full potential as a closeted gay man who can't read, bake or do anything productive. He can't even hook up at a pub without being mugged. Then again, his one skill is catching rats and killing them. Reuben the rat boy is probably how he will be known as if he died in this disgustingly depressing and dirty place.
Author K.A. Merikan does a good job with the description of post zombie plague London. The reader may want to take a shower after reading about the sewers, filthy air and even filthier populace. Had I known the first third of the book is spent mucking in this gloom from Reuben's eyes, I might have not read the book. Because honestly, Reuben is not the kind of character I like nor is he someone I want to read about. Fortunately, I methodically plowed through to the good parts.
Reuben's life is desolate and it's very first world middle class of me, but I just don't care. He's kind of a waste of human life and the authors show him to be this way. He's slow, makes bad choices and is easily conned. They do a great job of demonstrating how worthless his life is and it shows when he's tricked into slavery. What is interesting about Reuben is that he doesn't think he's dumb. He takes offense to it because he is bright enough to know when everyone treats him like a moron. He even questions people why they think he's stupid.
"Is there something in my face that says 'moron'?" He [Reuben] swallowed the food and straightened up.
Erik furrowed his eyebrows, getting lost in thought as he cleaned his hand with a napkin. "No, it's more about your eyes, I believe." (p. 96)
Ouch. This just gets better and better as everyone makes Reuben feel inferior. This does change when he's been captured and taken to Bylondon where the rich revel in their perversities. He's sold as a slave to Erik aka Bluefinger. Erik turns Reuben into a pony boy named Copper.
This is where the story becomes interesting. Reuben is suddenly transformed into a very worthy stallion. Copper's potential is much higher than Reuben's. In addition, Copper's life is filled with luxuries despite the depravity he needs to suffer through guilty pleasures such as ass fucking and cock sucking. The sexual interludes with Erik as well as the punishment are delightful. The fisting scene is what saved this book for me.
The characters in this story are for the most part disengaging. The secondary characters are either wimps or thugs. The only one in this story which is admirable is Erik's cook, Mr. Fry. He's the one lone character who seems to be both humane and with a gentle touch. His scene in the kitchen with Copper is the sweetest and most redeeming in this story for me.
It is commendable about how the author changes the main character from something worthless to something of worth. It is not only in the eye of the beholder, but how one trains a person. Copper is given training and praise. He thrives under all of this. Is this perhaps a social commentary in a My Fair Lady allusion?
From a worldbuilding perspective, despite the gritty details of Reuben's surroundings and Copper's luxuries, it's rather sketchy. This world which is focused just on a little part of England with big protective walls to keep out the zombies bring a World War Z feel to it. If one has seen this movie, then it helps fill in a lot of blanks. There is very little details about how the zombies came to be. There is very little detail about the rich in Bylondon or even about Erik's family. What exactly does Erik do? He is very good at some kind of forgeries, but what kind of forgeries? From a story plot substance, this book is emaciated. This is not a bad thing because the focus is really devoted to Copper's transformative journey. It's a beautiful thing to see when this rough diamond is found and polished.
This m/m novel is recommended for those who don't mind zombies interfering with their ponyplay sex.

Certi aspetti dell'ambientazione di questo libro mi hanno ricordato molto una trilogia di Anne Rice (la trilogia dei Sensi, per intenderci), dove anche là i protagonisti maschili vivevano intense avventure forzate in #atmosferacavallo, bardati con code, morsi, criniere e finimenti (mi pare che persino l'aggancio del carretto fosse un po' particolare, ma qui sorvolo perché andrei fuori tema...).
Tuttavia si tratta pur sempre di un'opera uscita dalla mente doppia e geniale delle Merikan e dunque questo libro si è subito tramutato in qualcosa di ben altro.
Faccio fatica pure io a etichettarlo o a inserirlo dentro parametri generali, per potervelo presentare e invogliarvi alla lettura.
Le solite Merikan partono da una stramba post-apocalisse zombie, con una una Londra distopica e miserabile, trasformata in una società disgregata e dissoluta. Da una parte, ci sono i quartieri popolari, quelli dove si fanno i pasticci di pane con farcitura di ratti, dove si sgobba, ci si ammala e si muore; dall'altra, i quartieri signorili di Bylondon, dove la differenza di ricchezza e immensa, e dove i ricchi vanno in giro con maschera protettiva, sono circondati da domestici e schiavi, possono concedersi il lusso di soddisfare i propri capricci, che siano spettacoli di divertimento nelle arene con gli zombie oppure piaceri ancora più inusuali...
Fuori dalle mura o nelle fogne incombono invece gli zombie, la cui presenza ricorda la permanente precarietà di vita e civiltà.
Reuben, aspirante panettiere, capelli rossi e corpo robusto, viene rapito e venduto a un signorotto, il giovane enigmatico Bluefinger, per divenire il suo nuovo giocattolo: un vero e proprio cavallo, costretto a vivere in una stalla (di lusso), mangiare e lavarsi come un cavallo, montato come un cavallo (in ogni senso...). Una storia d'amore? Una storia di mera perversione malvagia?
Bluefinger si preoccupa per il suo cavallo, a modo suo, ma non è certo un personaggio positivo. Reuben si ribella, lo respinge, subisce violenze e sopraffazioni, anche se talvolta comincia ad assuefarsi alla nuova vita come Copper, riducendo per gradi il confine tra rabbia e assoggettamento.
E' un primo libro, con un'apertura sul proseguo: pertanto non dirò proprio nulla sulla trama in sé e per sé. Diciamo che non è una lettura part tutti, neppure per chi abitualmente legge MM.
Potrebbe risultare disturbante, siete avvertiti.
Se avete letto altro delle Merikan siete già preparate, anche se qui viene chiesto un passo in più.

5 solid stars for this one! Reuben works as a baker for his father in the London slums. He has an unhappy, unfulfilled life and part of that is the fact he has to suppress his sexual desires. One day he is abducted after being tricked by a so called friend and sold to a wealthy owner in Bylondon.
Reuben is treated with meticulous care, well fed and looked after and has almost everything he has ever dreamed of. However, his new owner Eric Dal treasurers Reuben as his prized stallion, rather than a man and the Pony Play aspect kicks in! Reuben has his own groom to bath him, cut and shave his hair into a mane and there are tail plugs, harnesses and many other pony devises used throughout the book.
What I really enjoyed was the growing relationship/friendship, between Reuben and Eric (strange though it was). Eric often had to be harsh with Reuben, to train him and bring him up to 'Stallion' standards but when they were together they laughed and teased each other and were both endearing. Reuben is treated with meticulous care, well fed and looked after and has almost everything he has ever dreamed of. However, his new owner Eric Dal treasurers Reuben as his prized stallion, rather than a man and the Pony Play aspect kicks in! Reuben has his own groom to bath him, cut and shave his hair into a mane and there are tail plugs, harnesses and many other pony devises used throughout the book.
What I really enjoyed was the growing relationship/friendship, between Reuben and Eric (strange though it was). Eric often had to be harsh with Reuben, to train him and bring him up to 'Stallion' standards but when they were together they laughed and teased each other and were both endearing. There are also a lot of giggle moments and I could not help but really love the both of them. I’ve never read anything with pony play before (it’s not something that’s particularly interested or appealed to me before), but I was in the mood to try something new and decided to give this one a shot. Which turned out to be a very bad choice, especially for a first introduction to this type of kink.
I haven’t finished this story, and I’m not sure if I ever will. I got to about 54% (at the scene where Reuben is introduced to the “reading chair”) and decided to call it quits. I may try to finish at a later date (out of sheer morbid curiosity), but for now, I wanted to get my thoughts down while it’s all still fresh in my mind.
I guess I’ll start out with what I actually liked. Just a couple of things, which are what saved this one from a 1-star rating. First was the professional writing. There is so much unpolished, juvenile writing, and silly, corny, unrealistic dialogue in this genre, that finding something that’s well-written (even if you don’t like the actual content, characters, etc.) is like finding a diamond in an ocean of pebbles. So, kudos to the author for the high-quality writing. Secondly, I thought the world building was very well done. It’s a fascinating, unique setting, and I had no problems at all, picturing this strange, historical, steampunk-ish, zombie-ridden, post apocalyptic-type version of our world.
But, as for the rest of the story… Well, I still don’t know how I feel about the pony play aspect, and I honestly don’t know if that’s because it just doesn’t do it for me, or if I couldn’t really focus and appreciate it because my mind was too preoccupied with all the other fucked up shit that was going on…
I don’t know if anyone else has mentioned this (I haven’t had a chance yet, to read through any of the other reviews here, and I don’t really want to – I don’t want to be influenced by them before I write my own review), but this story is NOT a romance. It’s advertised as one (on the Smashwords page, where I purchased my copy, it’s tagged as “Romance”) but holy hell… In what twisted, fucked-up universe could this EVER be considered a romance? And the BDSM? NOT the typical kind you would expect. The BDSM aspects of this story are all about punishment (and NOT the erotic, titillating kind) which involve Reuben being bound while he has his face smashed into a wall (bloody nose and all) by his Master’s lackey, being hit/slapped in the face by his Master, and having his Master snap, fly into a rage, and beat the living fuck out of him with a cane.
Which brings me to the characters. In the beginning, I was really fascinated with the “Master”. He was presented as a very odd, mysterious type of character, and I was looking forward to learning more about him. But as the story progressed, I slowly started getting some really bad vibes about him. And by the time I reached the scene where they had their first dinner together, in that “house of horrors” dining hall, I realized he was NOT some sexy, darkly sinister “make you shiver in a good way” type of character. He’s just a creepy fucker. Like, “mentally ill serial killer” kind of creepy.
And then there’s Reuben. Poor, stupid Reuben. I liked him very much in the beginning, but again, as the story progressed, I started to realize just how ironic it was that he was always so upset about everyone calling him “stupid”, because… he actually IS. And oh god, how I can’t stand stupid main characters. It’s the final nail in the coffin that completely kills a story for me. And this character really does fall under the TSTL (too stupid to live) category, which again is ironic, because the man that owns him may very well kill him… literally. But oh no, he’s more worried about being called stupid, worried about what he’s going to be fed, worried about the humiliation, whining and sulking about not being allowed any alcohol. Not to mention, attacking his Master and mouthing off every chance he gets, even AFTER he’s been repeatedly beaten for that. Slow learner? Umm, yeah… that would be putting it mildly. Hell, even someone with half a brain would have enough sense of self-preservation to keep their mouth shut and behave (while waiting for a chance to escape), especially when they know for a fact that “disobedient horses” get “put down”, and have their heads stuffed and mounted on the dining room wall.
Like I said before… Lots of fucked up shit going on in this story. Creepy as hell. NO romance (yes, I’ve only read roughly half of it, but I honestly don’t see how this could ever turn around and become “romantic”). A creepy, mentally ill, abusive, murderous main character, paired with an incredibly stupid, sulky/whiny one. And I’d be hard-pressed to even call this erotic, although, to be fair, that part of it is purely subjective. If I didn’t have so many issues with the characters, the sex scenes would probably have been much more enjoyable for me.
But as it is… this story just left me cold and queasy, and I really wish I could get my $4.99 back. :(

I waited until the last minute to read this books because to be honest I was so nervous. I love Kat and Agnes but I am a firm believer that you should give honest reviews and not just give away stars because you like a certain author, it is not fair for the people who read your reviews. So I was nervous, "what if I hate it? I don't wanna give a bad review". this book has a lot of things that are just not my cuppa, I do not enjoy historical romance because so many things that I hate were okay in those times and it's hard for me to let it go plus the pony play is very hardcore.
After the long intrduction I'm happy to say I enjoyed this book, here's my review:
Reuben is a young baker with a shameful secret, he is very naive and honest and sadly falls for the lies of a better future and ends up as blue fingers new mare.
Erik, crazy scary Ekik, he is definitely something, he literally has blue fingers because of his jobs, job that gives him the power to have his ponies.
This "relationship" starts as noncon, it is very tricky because Reuben does like to have sex with men and enjoys being taken but he feels great shame plus there's the whole pony thing, if he doesn't do what Erik wants he is severely punished so he ends up giving in.
Thing is, Erik is charming and by the end of this you want to know more about him and even start to like him.

Ooh I liked this! I was in the mood for the type of story where the owner is sort of terrible but falls for his slave. I was going to reread Under His Heel but this one hit the spot!

I don’t think I’ll be able to review it until finishing the complete series. The worldbuilding is superb, the POV character Reuben is wonderfuly complex and even relatable. The book makes you feel but can be too much sometimes.
The romance (if it can even be called that at this point) and the main love (?) interest is dark and twisted. The title of the book fits the story perfectly. I’m very intrigued to find out how the story continues.

I planned to read book #2 for a group challenge pet play/menage and since I couldn't very well start with the second book and I already had #1 and glad I did. I've read a number of books by these authors and I'd have to say this is my favorite series to date. I've not read much pet play books so this was a pushing boundaries series for me.
This is set in 1907, twenty years into the zombie plague and Reuben is a not-very-good baker working with his not-very-nice father scratching every penny together they can. On top of that, Reuben isn't all that interested in women, his dark fantasies revolve around men, rough men and that his shame and he puts himself in very unsafe circumstances. An acquaintance talks him into a job that sounds too easy to be true when in reality, he has just found himself abducted and bought by a man who wants him to act like a pony and have sex as a pony.
Reuben spends this book alternately liking how he's treated as a valued pony and being deeply ashamed of how much he likes it. His master, Erik is hard to read and is as kinky as they come. Erik has had some bad luck with previous ponies and sometimes doesn't understand Copper/Reuben's reactions and punishes him not understanding Copper's motivations.
As time goes on, Copper begins to revel in being the best pony for his master because Erik always shows his appreciation.
I found this very interesting in how Reuben is slowly shaped into a stallion and the outfits and the accoutrements to be a realistic two-legged pony. On to book 2.

This book certainly stretched my limits...
I love K.A. Merikan, this writing team always pushes boundaries and comes up with the most original (and a bit weird) stuff. They have the ability to blend sub-genres together seamlessly so you never know what you're going to get.
This story is kind of historical (year is 1907) but happens in a parallel universe where there's been a zombie plague. I guess I would call it Steam-Punk...they wear cool gas masks, lots of leather and they are just starting to develop electricity.
Reuben is just existing...working with his dad as a baker and randomly hooking up with men. He has a deeply submissive nature but doesn't recognize it and thinks he's a pervert with ghastly desires.
After a friend's betrayal, he gets sold into slavery where Erik (a rich eccentric) buys him. Reuben is forces to become a stallion named Copper and behave as a horse for his Master's pleasure.
I want to love Erik, but I'm still a little reluctant (like Copper). He's very affectionate but quick to anger. This is pony-play to the extreme.

This book is brutal at times, seriously deranged at others, it's quirky and odd and definitely an acquired taste, one I don't think I've got.
I do intend to read the lot though because I'm intrigued as to where it's going.
ETA: Me here in March 2017 commenting again regarding this series. I've reread it subsequently and have to say that my ratings have all gone up a star. The pony play element of this really does work and puppy play has become (in the last 12 months after much more reading of it) a particular favourite kink of mine now.

Not going to lie ... this is definitely NOT my kind of usual read. When I started, my brain immediately started compartmentalizing ... that this was not romance in a "traditional" sense. So I read this pretty much like watching from observation gallery. There was a bridge between the story and myself ... so I wasn't really an involved reader. I need to say it because it influences my rating; I give high rating when I am quite emotionally connected to the characters. Which means that this may never be part of my 4-or-5 stars category.
Having said that... I found that I actually liked this book :).
I thought the whole get-ups of transforms Reuben as Copper, the beautiful stallion owned by crime lord Erik Dal, to be quite interesting. Sure there were torments, and punishments, with tail-plugs, halters, mane haircut, and other devices ... but it also had groom, and rewards, like giving Copper sugar cubes when he was being a good pony!
It isn't a humiliation kink, Erik is serious about his horses. For me, that made a difference because then I thought the progress of Reuben being a proud horse to be quite natural. I even loved it when Reuben being affectionate to his Master, him nuzzling Erik cheek, neck, and all.
I still don't understand much about the zombies factor in this book though. Since the whole book is pretty much set inside Erik's estate, I wonder how the zombies are important here. This can easily be set-up in an alternate universe without zombie, and it still works. Maybe the zombies will be more significant in the next books??
Oh, and I also want to understand more about Erik. The book is written from Reuben's perspective. So as Master, Erik is still a big enigma to me.

So, I'd heard of this book a while back and, although curious about it (since well-written ponyplay is rather...scarce bookwise), I kept sidestepping it. NGL, it was the whole zombie thing in the title. I don't like reading about them or am interested in them, etc. So I kept almost-buying this book only to go "naaah".
BUT THEN, Mado and Oliza started the series and THEIR reactions to the book got me thinking about reading it. In addition, I've given myself a mini-challenge to, each month, read a book that pushes at my boundaries. And so I started reading it thinking "let's see how far I can get into it."
There was a LOT about this book that turned out to be an adventure complete with chills, thrills, and WTFkery. At the same time, and as twisted as it might sound, I really enjoyed this novel. If the second book is as good as this one, I might be on my way to becoming a fan of these authors.
Since the blurb gives you a good idea of what happens, I'm going to try to point out what made this one of my most memorable reads for 2017 without spoiling much. Like, some of the charm in this book is going along with Reuben-Copper as his life turns topsy-turvy.
+ I lurve Erik (LOL LOL LOL!)
His obsession with all things equestrian is so OTT that I was legit stunned more than once. I mean, imagine someone who has a particular fantasy and has the means to reshape their reality to fit that fantasy without having to worry about ANY consequences.
At first I wasn't sure about him. BUT he's REALLY funny! His reactions to Reuben's initial confusion as to the pony play angle were GOLDEN. Erik's so chill yet focused. Mind you, he's also someone who can be really cruel. Like, there are MANY REASONS why he's hated and, to some extent, feared by other people in the book. And, just in case we start to really like him, the novel throws a few things that adds a strong creeptastic angle to his personality.
He's someone who is v. confident as to who he is and what he likes that he legit gives 0 fucks if anyone else has a problem with his horse-y thing. It was pretty stimulating to see someone who wasn't ashamed.
+ The worldbuilding
The book's set in early 1900s London, 20 years or so after a zombie plague has produced a steampunk era. So we end up with a mishmash of things that give a v. tactile quality to Reuben and Erik's world.
+ The pony play
Yes, it was quite extreme (Erik truly does not fool around his equestrian kink) BUT it also revealed a lot about Erik, Jack, and even Reuben-Copper.
What I didn't like
- Reuben
His POV is the only one we see throughout the whole book. If I think about it, there were two things that made it difficult to warm up to him:
1. Kinda complain-y.
His life (before Erik takes him on to train him as a pony) is super miserable. He's barely holding onto life. So, by the time he ends up in Erik's domain, as terrible as it to become Copper, his life has gotten 20,000% better. Still, there are several moments where he complains about one thing or another and I was like "dude, you've deffo moved up in this messed up version of the world!" >:(
2. He has v. deep internal homophobia.
It takes him a long time to accept the idea that men can show physical affection for each other. So there would be moments in which I'd be side-eying Reuben-Copper, wishing he'd get it together. Only to remember that he's struggling to accept his own attraction to men. Like, every sexual interaction prior to his times with Erik was rather grim.
THAT SAID, there was a point around the 70% mark in which he's fretting about people finding out that he's Erik's pony and I was like "ugh, Reuben-Copper, chill out!"
- No women or POCs
I think the only woman is way in the background as a maid and the only POC we ever see is dead. :-/
HEED THESE WARNINGS
Let me begin by saying that there is NO bestiality or necrophilia. *wipes forehead with relief* IIRC, Erik even says that he like all things equestrian but he wouldn't want to have sex with an actual horse.
There ARE zombies. They show up a few times in the story and are as horrible as you expect them to be. Since the bulk of the story takes place in Erik's mansion, however, they show up way less than the title would make it seem like.
HOWEVER, the follow kind of trigger warnings are on the actual page:
- Stockholm Syndrome;
- Dubcon segueing into noncon
- No gaslighting but there is definite one character manipulating the other;
- Extreme power imbalance.
TL;DR:If you're someone who usually reads darker themes, this one might scratch an itch. There are TONS of ponyplay--which makes sense because that is the central story (Reuben becoming Copper and Erik's next-level-obsession with horses.)
The consent factor when it comes to Erik/Reuben-Copper is blurry to the point of disappearing...and then it kinda eases back to consent. Some scenes are emotionally and/or psychologically uncomfortable. Some of the sex is rough.
One last thing: THIS IS NOT A ROMANCE NOVEL. At least at this point in the series. It is true that Erik and Reuben-Copper DO forge a bond and connect in a manner of speaking. HOWEVUH, I wouldn't say that there are romantic feelings involved.
NGL, this is a tough book to recommend. It's definitely a ride. #LOL

So, I'd heard of this book a while back and, although curious about it (since well-written ponyplay is rather...scarce bookwise), I kept sidestepping it. NGL, it was the whole zombie thing in the title. I don't like reading about them or am interested in them, etc. So I kept almost-buying this book only to go "naaah".
BUT THEN, Mado and Oliza started the series and THEIR reactions to the book got me thinking about reading it. In addition, I've given myself a mini-challenge to, each month, read a book that pushes at my boundaries. And so I started reading it thinking "let's see how far I can get into it."
There was a LOT about this book that turned out to be an adventure complete with chills, thrills, and WTFkery. At the same time, and as twisted as it might sound, I really enjoyed this novel. If the second book is as good as this one, I might be on my way to becoming a fan of these authors.
Since the blurb gives you a good idea of what happens, I'm going to try to point out what made this one of my most memorable reads for 2017 without spoiling much. Like, some of the charm in this book is going along with Reuben-Copper as his life turns topsy-turvy.
+ I lurve Erik (LOL LOL LOL!)
His obsession with all things equestrian is so OTT that I was legit stunned more than once. I mean, imagine someone who has a particular fantasy and has the means to reshape their reality to fit that fantasy without having to worry about ANY consequences.
At first I wasn't sure about him. BUT he's REALLY funny! His reactions to Reuben's initial confusion as to the pony play angle were GOLDEN. Erik's so chill yet focused. Mind you, he's also someone who can be really cruel. Like, there are MANY REASONS why he's hated and, to some extent, feared by other people in the book. And, just in case we start to really like him, the novel throws a few things that adds a strong creeptastic angle to his personality.
He's someone who is v. confident as to who he is and what he likes that he legit gives 0 fucks if anyone else has a problem with his horse-y thing. It was pretty stimulating to see someone who wasn't ashamed.
+ The worldbuilding
The book's set in early 1900s London, 20 years or so after a zombie plague has produced a steampunk era. So we end up with a mishmash of things that give a v. tactile quality to Reuben and Erik's world.
+ The pony play
Yes, it was quite extreme (Erik truly does not fool around his equestrian kink) BUT it also revealed a lot about Erik, Jack, and even Reuben-Copper.
What I didn't like
- Reuben
His POV is the only one we see throughout the whole book. If I think about it, there were two things that made it difficult to warm up to him:
1. Kinda complain-y.
His life (before Erik takes him on to train him as a pony) is super miserable. He's barely holding onto life. So, by the time he ends up in Erik's domain, as terrible as it to become Copper, his life has gotten 20,000% better. Still, there are several moments where he complains about one thing or another and I was like "dude, you've deffo moved up in this messed up version of the world!" >:(
2. He has v. deep internal homophobia.
It takes him a long time to accept the idea that men can show physical affection for each other. So there would be moments in which I'd be side-eying Reuben-Copper, wishing he'd get it together. Only to remember that he's struggling to accept his own attraction to men. Like, every sexual interaction prior to his times with Erik was rather grim.
THAT SAID, there was a point around the 70% mark in which he's fretting about people finding out that he's Erik's pony and I was like "ugh, Reuben-Copper, chill out!"
- No women or POCs
I think the only woman is way in the background as a maid and the only POC we ever see is dead. :-/
HEED THESE WARNINGS
Let me begin by saying that there is NO bestiality or necrophilia. *wipes forehead with relief* IIRC, Erik even says that he like all things equestrian but he wouldn't want to have sex with an actual horse.
There ARE zombies. They show up a few times in the story and are as horrible as you expect them to be. Since the bulk of the story takes place in Erik's mansion, however, they show up way less than the title would make it seem like.
HOWEVER, the follow kind of trigger warnings are on the actual page:
- Stockholm Syndrome;
- Dubcon segueing into noncon
- No gaslighting but there is definite one character manipulating the other;
- Extreme power imbalance.
