Dawn is disappointed that a blinding snowstorm has prevented her, Cree, and the twins from traveling to be with his sister Wintra for the birth of her first babe. To keep Dawn’s mind off her disappointment and entertain some of the villagers who have sought the safety of the keep, Old Mary tells a tale—Winter Tale—that enthralls as much as it frightens.
At the end of the tale, a stranger suddenly appears and peculiar things begin to happen in the keep. Could the tale be true? Did Old Mary release the evil of the Winter Tale upon the village? Cree will not hear of such nonsense, but when some in the keep begin to fall ill along with Old Mary and Elsa, the healer, Cree begins to wonder. And he knows it will not be long before his wife does as she pleases and searches for the truth, possibly placing herself in danger.
Is the stranger a mere man who seeks shelter from the storm or the phantom of Winter Tale?
So...maybe it's just me, but I've seen others comment on the same thing: I didn't like this one. Specifically, I didn't like how it had a mythical / witchcraft twist, because...yeah, as others have said, it doesn't fit with the rest of the series. Until now, for all that there are coincidences in terms of people meeting up and talking all the time, or each chapter ending on a cliffhanger and whatnot, at least everything that happened was still in the realm of reality, in that there was no magic, faeries, alternate dimensions, time travel, etc. The rules still operated as those that do in the real world, but now...
Um...ugh.
(And also, just as an aside, I felt that the author was just using the term "witch" as a very convenient superstitious one, as nothing was explained well regarding that, and even the villain's motivation and the way the plot progressed was just kind of flimsy and therefore felt forced.
Once again, this is a definite SKIP in terms of re-reading this series.
Wow! What a Fantastic Story! Highlander's Winter Tale will keep you spellbound as it takes you on a rollercoaster ride that weaves a story from beginning to end with threads of intrigue, suspense, mystery and sizzling passion. As a spooky winter tale comes to an end the doors to the great hall bang open and a gust of snowy winter wind swirls around a dark shrouded mysterious stranger that eerily resembles the end of the tale. Is this the tale coming to life or just a coincidence? As Dawn and Cree find themselves being pulled into a vortex of darkness as a sadistic phantom who causes mayhem and will stop at nothing to get what he wants. Donna Fletcher has given readers a book that is haunty written, characters that are well thought out and each one came to life and you find yourself drawn into their story, heartfelt emotions and brims with tension building twists and turns. With setting descriptions and action sequences that are wonderfully vivid that brings the story to life and as the uncertainties escalates the suspense builds and danger abound which brings this read together perfectly
I had a few hours to spare this afternoon so decided to read this book...I really wasn't prepared to be sitting on the edge of my seat the whole way through! Wow, talk about a gripping tale! I thought Donna Fletcher did a really good job writing this story, complete with curses, witches and a clan overcome by fear. It's up to Cree and Dawn to solve who the mystery man is and why so many of the clan have fallen ill, food is rotting and animals are sick.
I so enjoyed visiting with Cree and Dawn again, never a dull moment in their lives!!
Love this series. I re-read every few months. However, I did not like this short story. I think it would have been better without it but hey maybe other people like it.
Oh, this is another wonderful book by Donna Fletcher. I get to read about my two favorite characters. Dawn and Cree. But she brings in all the old people so you feel like you are part of the book. Story line was great, and plot was awesome. How she is able to make a book so mysterious in a short story but make it feel like a novel is beyond me. But this is a story you want to read.
If you love Cree and Dawn as I do, then you will love this one as well
The book is good. I'm beginning to think Donna Fletcher is just like a really really good cook. She gets a really big bowl throws a big bunch of ingredients in adds heaps of spices and exotic flavors then stirs it up to get all the lumps out then bakes it till she thinks it is done to perfection then let's you the reader have at it. And sates you it does. Thank you Donna Fletcher.
I just love Dawn and Cree stories, and this is no exception, it's full of the love the two enjoy and still has the element of laughter you come to expect even through a troubling time. Definitely a keeper and one to read over and over.
All there is to say about Donna Fletcher's Cree and Dawn's stories is....Loved, loved, loved! I would love another full lengthened book about them and there kids at a marriageable age. I also have been patiently waiting for Sloan's HEA ...hint, hint!
