“Just another reason to leave this rotten, uncaring city behind.”
Three years after the Ebonson family’s fall from grace and Gertrude Ebonson has become what no woman wants to be. As a fallen woman, she trades the only thing she has left to survive the cold winters. Penniless and isolated from her friends, she contemplates the end of her life.
Meanwhile, Theodore Norlong lives under the iron fist of his abusive aristocratic father. Forced into a loveless marriage, Theodore must put his feelings for Gertrude aside. Under the threat of being condemned to an asylum, Theodore tows the line. But when an opportunity to escape appears, he decides to take one last chance.
Only Edward Urwin sees a way out, in the form of the most beautiful woman he has ever seen; Eleanor Salisbury. But with the brutal orphanage owner Dr. Jacob Thorne and his increasingly distant boss Victor Kennelworth determined to hold him back, it seems the three friends will never be reunited…
James Farner is a professional writer and draws upon his love of fiction and his love of stories that span generations. His signature series Made in Yorkshire was born out of a desire to find out ‘what happened next?’
At the end of every good film, book, or TV show the characters disappear and that’s the end of them. James isn’t alone in the desire to find out what happened to the characters afterwards.
This is how Made in Yorkshire appeared. Starting from 1953 and driving on to the modern day, James explores the different eras of Britain through his colourful cast of characters.
Prior to writing fiction, he enjoyed a career as a freelance writer. His writing has appeared online, in magazines, and in a variety of other publications.
When not writing, he can be found sketching, watching sports, and playing the tin whistle.
After finishing the first book, I almost swore to never read the rest of the series but decided to give Book 2 a chance. I finished reading it but feel it really should rate 1.5 stars. It contains the same main characters but their circumstances have gone down hill even more in this book and there seemed to be even more evil villains! It was a depressing, lengthy read with no real bright spots and the ending promises more deeply depressing situations in the next book. Despite getting all five books in this series as free e-books, I don't think I'll ever finish reading them! There are too many other really exciting books out there instead.
While I really enjoyed reading the first book in this series, this one takes a dark turn which I found rather depressing. The decent characters suffer endless calamities and the nasty characters appear to go from strength to strength. While this may be true in real life, it makes for unpleasant reading. I have started reading the third novel but I must admit that if the story-line continues on this dark trajectory, it will be the last book I read by this author.
I have already read several of Name Father's book. This too was great. He writes so you feel like you are the with the characters. I will continue this series and other books by Mr. Father.
Edward Urwin's story unwinds with action and the unexpected in Book 2 of the Pomp and Poverty series. Good versus evil is personified with depth of character development and intriguing plot. A final cliff hanger makes reading Book 3 a must.
As with the first book I was drawn in immediately and my involvement with the characters never wained. I am hooked on this series and will buy the next book now.
Edward, Gertrude, and Theodore just want to live their lives in peace but others think differently. Theodore's ultra rich father will never let him go and forbids his marriage to Gertrude. Gertrude can't make it on her own and falls into prostitution on the worst streets of London. Edward finds love but it is taken from him after he fails to meet the gentry's standards. It will be interesting to see what happens in the third book.
Another great book by James Farner. It seems like each one in this series is getting better and better. Again, with his vivid descriptions and narrations, he is able to take the reader into the time period in which these books take place. He also makes you feel like you are right there part of the action as it is happening. This makes for a great more enjoyable read.
This is the second book in this series and the plot and the story are very readable. This is growing on me and I am keeping my eyes open for book three .
