Simply put, this is a beautifully written story with depth, understanding and heart.
The dynamics between Samantha (Sammi) Carnevale and Cillian Ronan were wonderfully portrayed and I already know that this is a book I will reread. I definitely want to savor the compassion, kindness, understanding, attraction, affection and respect that are to be found here. Experience, once again, the many profound, heartbreaking, sweet and funny moments that happen between them as their relationship continues to grow and evolve...
Truth be told, I feel like I just watched two people who are meant to be together fall in love. I was shown, not just told. That's what I'm always looking for in my romances but I don't always feel that to this degree. So when I do, I acknowledge that something special has taken place...
It certainly wasn't a rush job and the obstacles before them are many but, somehow, in the midst of so much pain and a need for healing on the parts of both of the hero and the heroine, they found a way to reach out to one another, to bring light and joy into the places and spaces of individual darkness they've both been through and are forced to live with...
Sammi and Cillian felt real to me. I found myself rooting for them almost immediately, wanting them to find their way, loving how their relationship evolved, how trust was formed, how secrets were shared and truths were revealed. It was wonderful to see how two people who'd been broken in different ways, were able to find something special and beautiful in each other.
Cillian is a war hero, a skilled fighter, a man who takes care of his family, looks out for others, and who, unfortunately, lives with guilt for something he couldn't prevent. The man is powerful, smart, skilled and fierce when necessary. He doesn't hesitate to protect those he loves yet he balances that considerable strength with kindness, humor, respect and appreciation.

The fact that she found a way to continue, to move forward, on her own terms, despite the issues that she has, made me want to hug her and tell her I was proud of her.
Nothing was rushed here and so it was believable for me. I got where Sammi was coming from and why, and each step forward, each small triumph, was beautiful to behold. Each step back was also understandable but the author built my faith that Sammi would eventually conquer her setbacks with time because that's who she is. Sammi is a sweetheart and a survivor. I couldn't help but admire how she often fought to find her courage in the face of her sometimes overwhelming fears.

These two are also surrounded by some fantastic supporting characters (like Jazz, Matthew, etc.) who made me laugh, wonder, and moved me as well. So many great moments and conversations.
There are two books in this series and now I'm chomping at the bit because I need to continue. I know the second book will be challenging to my head and heart space because Cillian and Sammi are going to have to go through some difficult stuff before they get their HEA but I also have faith that when I get there, it's going to be beautiful.
Why?
Because they will have fought for it and won.

Okay.. I've thought on this awesomely written book, and I'm still at a loss as to what to say about it.
Other than it was awesome. LOL. So bear with me. Please.
When you come across a book that just touches you on an elemental level, no matter what may or may not be occurring within the pages, it just hooks you. That's what this book has done to me & that's what makes me love reading the most. Getting lost in something and feeling as though I'm right there. Or sometimes even experiencing these things for myself. When an author can do this, whether I walk away loving or hating the book, they've done their job.
This book has done that for me & more. I LOVE the dynamic here between Cillian & Sammi.
Cillian, is the true definition of what an alpha male/man is & should be. Bar none. This young man is about his business. No matter what that may be. He's all about the right & wrong & making the hard choices. Yet he still keeps his moral compass in tact. He knows when to push and when not to. When to be respectful & when to demand respect. He's also great at the delicate things. Being gentle, patient, & present in the moment. No matter what those moments may entail. I love that about him. What I love the most is that he remains consistent throughout this book with his thoughts & actions.
Sammi, you have to love this young woman. She's a fighter. Coming out of her own nightmare learning to be free & herself again. Stumbling yes, but still doing it gracefully. Witnessing this through her eyes & Cillian's, I got it. I just love her.. It totally makes sense why these two would be drawn to one another. How they make the hard things look so easy, even when it seems hopeless. I just love how they connect. How they hold one another up while learning to be strong on their own, at the same time.
The title to this book/2 part mini series, is the perfect definition of what you witness here in this story. With these two characters, & what is going on. Not just with them collectively, but within themselves. And all that is surrounding them. For lack of a better word, it's just awesome.
I cannot wait to have the time to dive into book 2, to see how this all comes to a close.
If my point was lost on you, YES! I love this book and I certainly recommend it. Go out and read it people.

Love this. Looong slow burn, great characters & that kind of detail that makes you slip into another reality without boring you to tears.
Sammi & Cillian were great together. I love the ballet & fighting correlations & also the idea of a soldier falling for and helping a woman with PTSD.
Off to book #2 I go.

Pas de Deux

What an amazing story! I am not a fan of cliffhangers or stories that cover more than one book so when Pas de Deux came out in one volume and it had been reviewed favorably by some of my Goodreads friends, I jumped right on it. I was not disappointed.
This is a true love story from beginning to end. Both Sammi and Cillian have emotional obstacles to overcome in their lives. Sometimes this kind of angst can slow a book down but that was not the case here. Their story moves so smoothly and coherently that I found it difficult to put it down. Instead of their problems hindering their relationship it was the complete opposite. Their newfound friendship helped to bring healing to their tragic pasts. There was no bogging down into the MCs thoughts. As a reader I was allowed to feel their emotions as the story progresses.
I loved the emotional growth Sammi experiences throughout the story. When confronted with her worse fears she makes a conscious decision to stand strong and my respect for her grew exponentially. Cillian is a true gentleman through and through. Every decision he makes is based on what he feels is best for Sammi and not what he desires for himself. Sigh. He is awesome and it’s going to be a while before another hero can live up to his standards.
POSSIBLE SPOILER HERE:
Admittedly, I did struggle a little with the situation that causes this couple to stumble. I felt it was not believable due to the person that seemed to be in the center of the chaos. Both the H and h had already either seen, felt or experienced negative emotions regarding this person and yet they accepted their word as fact. I’m sorry but I just could not give this a full five stars due to my feelings regarding this issue.
I am definitely going to be watching out for more from this author and I’m just disappointed that there is no backlist to delve into.

5 Heartbreakingly Beautiful Stars
What an absolutely heartbreaking and yet oh so beautiful story. The writing was fantastic, the storyline was truly amazing and the main characters Cillian and Sammie.....OH EM GEE, I LOVED these two HARD:)
I read this 2 part series in one day and let me tell you, I couldn't and didn't want to put it down!!!!! it was so freaking swoon worthy, sweet, sexy, it was filled with tragedy form both of their pasts but yet the two of them together PERFECT in every sense of the word. Cillian and Sammie healed each other's hearts and made each whole again in the most slow, beautiful, touching, sweet and sexy way possible!!!!!!
Congrats S.K. Wynter, I am hooked and will look forward to more of your work in the future!!!!!!!

This was such an awesome close to this two book series. I just love how it all flowed & came together. Even in those moments of utter despair, anger & uncertainty, Cillian & Sammi wouldn't allow me to lose hope with them.
I don't want to say much for fear of ruining anything in this conclusion. The journey here is so intricate and paramount in it's reveals. I will say this though, this story was on point from beginning (and yes I'm including book one) to the final page here in this second book.
Just please leave this review & go pick up books 1 & 2. You will not be sorry.

I very much enjoyed the second installment in Sammi and Cillian's story! The first book gave us the backstory and let us slowly get to know the characters, individually and together, but this one felt like non-stop action. I loved how it picked you up and never let you go, I was hooked right until the end.
And I love it when I can really, truly feel the characters' love for one another, and that was definitely delivered. I mentioned it in my first review and I will mention it again and again... I LOVE Cillian. He was portrayed so well, he was a strong, alpha male but he wasn't a complete asshole. He had insecurities and doubts--I don't think those go away just because someone is an alpha male (maybe they have them to a lesser degree but unless it's an alpha male robot, they're still there). Sammi was just as wonderful and I loved watching her develop into a stronger survivor. Her trauma (while still present) didn't define her in any way that was unrealistic or overly dramatic. She let herself have bad days, but then she picked herself right back up.
If you are looking for a well written, sweet, slow burn, low-angst (a million other wonderful things) love story with engaging and likable characters, pick this duo up! You won't regret it :)

This book messed me up. Seriously. I haven’t read anything since I finished it.
The romance builds slow, but the sparks are sizzling and once that flame catches hold…holy shit!
Sam is a ballet dancer who moves to Boston with her family after a traumatic event in NYC. She’s wounded, but at her core she is pure steel. That is why she takes a chance going to a Southie boxing gym dominated by men. She needs the outlet, but she disguises herself as a boy to avoid unwanted attention. When her true gender is revealed(Book 1 when I read it, now both parts have been combined into one) it sets off something between her and the part-owner of that gym, Cillian Ronan.
A hometown hero for something he considers nothing more than duty, and a failed one at that, Killy understands wanting to keep your head down. As a soldier he also recognizes the symptoms of PTSD when he sees them. Sammi is suffering and he wants to help.
One thing I love about this story is the authenticity that shines through. I’ve read MMA stuff before, as well as military romance and most of them fall short in the reality dept. Not so here. The flashbacks ring true, the fighting kicks ass and the personalities are on point. Cillian slayed me. Hot, sexy, big-hearted Alpha that he is. His gesture to Sam at the end….omg, this man!!
It’s a hard road to our HEA and my stomach was in knots for ½ this installment, but the payoff was huge.

I loved this book, an intelligently written love story with two original characters that you just fall in love with.
It's quite amazing that this is the author's first novel, it feels so assured that you assume she has written several previously. There are no spelling mistakes, grammatical errors or incorrect usage of words which plague other Kindle self-published novels and that makes this a pleasure to read.
This is a slow-burn love story and all the better for it, no instant falling in love or jumping into bed with each other two minutes after meeting. There is angst and I suspect in book two there is going to be a lot more but that's part of what is so enjoyable about this story, you genuinely care what happens to the characters and want everything to turn out well.
There is a good plot and a great cast of supporting characters which rounds the story out nicely and no silly cliffhanger to make you want to rip out your hair in frustration, it stops at the perfect place.
I cannot wait for part two and this author is definitely one to watch.
It's quite amazing that this is the author's first novel, it feels so assured that you assume she has written several previously. There are no spelling mistakes, grammatical errors or incorrect usage of words which plague other Kindle self-published novels and that makes this a pleasure to read.
This is a slow-burn love story and all the better for it, no instant falling in love or jumping into bed with each other two minutes after meeting. There is angst and I suspect in book two there is going to be a lot more but that's part of what is so enjoyable about this story, you genuinely care what happens to the characters and want everything to turn out well.

5 Heartbreakingly Beautiful Stars
What an absolutely heartbreaking and yet oh so beautiful story. The writing was fantastic, the storyline was truly amazing and the main characters Cillian and Sammie.....OH EM GEE, I LOVED these two HARD:)
I read this 2 part series in one day and let me tell you, I couldn't and didn't want to put it down!!!!! it was so freaking swoon worthy, sweet, sexy, it was filled with tragedy form both of their pasts but yet the two of them together PERFECT in every sense of the word. Cillian and Sammie healed each other's hearts and made each whole again in the most slow, beautiful, touching, sweet and sexy way possible!!!!!!
Congrats S.K. Wynter, I am hooked and will look forward to more of your work in the future!!!!!!!

Disappointed after all the hype, but this didn’t ring my bell.

She is only slowly gaining back her power and independence, and one step of that is sneaking into a fighter’s gym dressed as a man to work out aggression.
Cillian Ronan came back from Afghanistan to a warm welcome in his home city, a home-town hero celebrity overnight. But no one knows what he went through for that accolade, and now he wants a quiet life running the family gym. Except his father sold it, and Cillian is trying everything he can to buy back into it. Including fighting professionally if he has to.

Cillian is intrigued by the young ‘man’ training at the gym, obviously trying to bulk up due to bullying, or so he assumes. When some of the other members take exception to the guy’s silence, it comes out that Sam is a woman, and one that almost got assaulted on Cillian’s watch, and in his own gym. Determined to make sure Sam knows she is safe with him and in the gym, he seeks her out, and they end up developing a friendship. They both have horrors in their past, and its obvious that if they tried, they might be able to heal each other.
Loves:
Despite other rave reviews, not a lot stood out for me here. The story was like others I have read previously and didn’t have enough unique elements to really stand out for me.
Likes:
I really loved Sam’s family. The scenes with her sisters, and then with her family dinners were great. They are big, loud, and stereotypical Italian.
Peeves:
This was REALLY slow going, at least in the beginning. There was no real romantic interest or even a hint of attraction for the first quarter of the book. At 80% there was a kiss, no tongue. And then when it looked like the two had actually decided they were attracted to each other and move to go on a date…. CLIFFHANGER. I realize the heroine is a so I kind of figured that the heat level would build, but I didn’t expect NONE. So yeah, not my cup of tea. I won’t bother with the second one.

A very good debut novel, and although I didn't love it, I'm still extremely excited to read more.
The story was well written and I enjoyed the characters, but I've never been a fan of third person POV. I just have a very hard time connecting, once in a while I'll love a third person POV, but it's rare. That being said I still really enjoyed this novel, particularly how Cillian was portrayed. FINALLY an alpha-male who isn't a complete douchebag who hooks up with anything in a skirt. It's such a tiny aspect but I enjoyed reading him a lot more for it.
The beginning was a little slow, I don't think they meet until about 10% and while most people probably don't care, I like things to be paced a little faster. And I generally like more dialogue compared to internal thought, but these are all personal preferences and I wouldn't discourage anyone from this novel because of my hang-ups. It's still a sweet, slow-burn romance that definitely deserves a look :) It had such a perfect ending/transition to the next novel too...

This story is from start to finish amazing. Wynter has a way to not only draw you in with her characters...but with her scenery and the emotions as well. Nothing is out of place or wasted, and as a result, there is a story here that is just too amazing to stop reading at a breakneck pace. Sweet, sexy, interesting, and even times humorous...I can go on and on...
So, I am off to read for the second time...and I encourage everyone to pick this up and follow suit! You will not be disappointed!

This budding relationship is down-to-earth and realistic while all establishing "relationship goals". The story is nicely placed and creates a happy balance between all the elements. I cannot wait for the next book!

Tldr: impressive debut novel. Solid writing. Beautiful slow burn romance
Two decent books in a row on ku! Coincidence or not that they were extremely similar? Who knows but this one corrected a lot of the things that went wrong in the last one, but made some similar and some new issues. Dancers and fighters are in my top five character tropes. Military as well and I got three for one in this book, plus a whole lot of yummy extra! As soon as I read the blurb I was dying to read it but due to the length (I didn't know until just a few minutes ago that at some point it'd been split into two volumes) I wanted to save it for a day I could start early and read straight through. The last book I read was Unbreak This Heart (uth) by Betty Shreffler and the two books are so similar that I won't be able to help myself but to compare them, but rest assured they are not close enough to raise plagiarism concerns. I really liked this couple. On their own, though they were richly developed and had their own internal issues, I found them a tad boring as characters. I liked Sammi, she was witty and stubborn. But although she was determined to get better and the way she handled her trauma was more realistic than uth, I didn't really ever feel her drive to actually get better. I also felt her attack could've been given more of a visceral impact than it had, given that it was her defining experience as a character. Cillian was probably a great character for a lot of women. He shared the same beautiful patience and care towards the heroine that made me love the hero of uth, with the added bonus of him not betraying the heroine's secret to anyone. But he was also a little bland for me on his own. Maybe it's because I'm used to more "alpha"type characters but while I liked him as a character on his own I didn't love him without the heroine. So apart the mcs were alright...But together they were so beautiful. I loved that this romance moved slow and that you really got the chance to see their relationship develop. Nothing even remotely sexual happens until 50% in and normally I'd be all like gimme gimme with sex scenes, but it was actually nice to have things taken really slow because there were actual developments during that time. I also liked that the author skipped the totally played out ladies man thing. I don't mind either character sleeping with people before the romance but I'm so bored with the whole oh he sleeps with everything that moves and she's practically if not totally a virgin thing that seems to dominate this genre. Anyways, these two had a beautiful love story playing out and then the drama. Now the drama in this book was a lot more cohesive than the various drama subplots of uth, but somehow it made less sense. Both characters were told a lie by someone neither of them trusted at all and both of them disliked. I somewhat understand the heroine's knee jerk reaction to what she was told because after her attack it was her nature not to trust, but then she never seems to consider hey maybe I shouldn't listen to something that came from the mouth of a known liar about behavior totally inconsistent with literally every interaction I've had with hero. The hero's reaction I don't understand at all he hated the villain AND his reactions went against his nature. Similar to uth though I felt like the ending was a little quick after everything the couple went through we deserved to get to see a little more of them being happy together before "the end." The writing was really impressive for a debut novel. I only noticed one minor error, nothing that interfered with the flow. For an author to write a book this long and keep a reader very used to much shorter books completely drawn in to the point of only putting it down for bathroom breaks...I find that very impressive and I will definitely keep an eye out for more by this author.

Wow! I loved this story that was so well-written that I came to tears at a couple points (both sad and happy). First of all, the cover on the edition I read is beautiful. The broken in pointe shoes over the boxing gloves were symbolic on many levels. I don't want to give anything away about the story. The book blurb is good to get you started. I really cared about Cillian and Sammi. They both were broken in their own way and had to come to the realization that there were things they had to do on their own if they wanted to move forward with their lives and with each other. This book was well worth my time. Read it and let others know about this hidden gem.

Alluring and captive romantic read! Even though this is a combined story, there were no gaps and the story flowed smoothly. I couldn't tell where the story would have split. Very well connected. A gripping read for that had me up to the early morning hours to finish!

Pas de Deux: Part One penned by Wynter S.K., is a new adult romance novel that introduces the burgeoning relationship between Samantha “Sammi” Carnevale and Cillian Ronan. Set in present day Boston, this emotionally captivating story features a slow burning romance between a woman battling demons from her past and a war hero struggling with growing accustomed to civilian life. Sammi, an independent Italian American with a protective family and dreams of opening her own dance studio, is desperate to let go of the traumatic events of her past when she meets Cillian, a native Southie, who has his own dreams of restoring his father’s gym to its original glory. It does not end in turmoil nor does it make one want to scream with an abrupt ending. Instead, Wynter S.K. has pulled me into this captivating story of two people struggling to adjust to new realities, and it is a sign of a good author that you can bet I will be reading part two when it is released on March 1st. And as a healthcare professional, I applaud Wynter S.K. for painting mental health in a respected light. Many people struggle with loss after traumatic events and it is not normalized often enough. It is wonderful to read a story that deals with loss and life after in such a realistic manner. Sammi is not a princess that needs to be rescued by a prince. She is a woman who is learning the value of human connection and its role in life after loss.

I read this book because it was on KU and it looked interesting. Then I saw all the hoopla about the book being plagiarized and published without her knowledge last year. That had me hooked. I had to find out what all the fuss was about.
It looks to me like the author took her book and cut it in two. This isn't really a series or a duet. This book ends (not in a cliffhanger) and the next one picks up where it left off. So I will say that you will need to read both books in order to get the full story. You probably could end at book one but you'll want to know where things are going.
I'm not going to give a synopsis, just my impressions. I liked this book. The characters were interesting and their challenges were intriguing. Book one is all about the sweet, slow unfolding of a friendship to more. There are kisses but nothing more. (Gotta read book 2 for that).
Would I recommend these books? I got this one free on KU, and bought book 2 so I paid $3.99 TOTAL. I guess it was worth it. I probably won't read it again. But if I'd had to buy both books for $8?
