I was in second grade when Reagan became President of the United States. I remember a bit about Jimmy Carter but Reagan's election is the first I remember and so really the first time I began to understand about the politics of our country. My parents voted for Reagan so of course, in my mind he was the best candidate during elections. I remember thinking how stately he seemed and how pretty Nancy Reagan was in her suits. I never knew how "bitchy" she was until listening to this story. I also thought everyone loved him and didn't know that people were concerned he was struggling with Alzhiemer's Disease while IN the White House.
Some surprises: *As a young man, Reagan almost joined the Communist Party but his friend thought he was too dumb and so he wasn't allowed to join. Later, Reagan saw that the party was not what it claimed and he became bery anti-communist.
*Nancy and Ronald Reagan used an astrologer to make decisions. He was sworn in as a governer at midnight because his astrologer said it was a better time for him.
*When he became governer, he had to sell his Malibu Ranch to afford this life choice. Eek! That's determination. Later the tv series, M*A*S*H was shot there and so was Butch and the Sundance Kid.
*As a child, I thought Ronald Reagan was a great actor and was so wise. It was surprising to me to hear that people though he was not smart at all, and that while he made a few good movies, he had a very short acting career.
Easy to read history. We all remember this in the nightly news. I’ll say the asterisk on every page with some random sidebar fact was odd and distracting. Not typically interesting.
Wow, learned a lot about Reagan, a perennial favorite around here. I still remember seeing him on TV saying, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” As with any biography, I didn’t love all I learned about him, his wife, his choices, but definitely was glad I read, and glad for the travel back in time.
