A Simple Guide to the Paleo Autoimmune Protocol

Rate this book
The Paleo Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) is a diet and lifestyle program designed to reduce inflammation, heal digestion, deliver nutrition that supports health, and ultimately reverse autoimmune disease. It's not a cure, but it can make a powerful difference in how you feel. The author knows this first-hand. She uses the AIP to manage rheumatoid arthritis. This book is designed to make the transition to the AIP easier. It contains all of the essential information in a package small enough to throw in your purse or backpack. It's simple enough that even someone with brain fog can understand. And it's written like a conversation between friends.

This book is the perfect guide for anyone wanting to know more about the AIP diet. I needed to know about everything it entailed.
I have been following a Paleo way of eating for about 5 years since being diagnosed with 3 different autoimmune issues. Sometimes that's not enough I've been told. I wanted to know more before just jumping in.
As Eileen points out, it's not all about diet. Stress and poor sleep also play important roles -- but learning how the AIP works is a huge first step. She walks you through so much in this book. I'm familiar with her from Instagram and the health community. She has provided numerous links for different resources that anyone might need.
I'd recommend this to anyone, whether they've been paleo for years or are just beginning to learn about healing. I will refer to it often I'm sure. It was a wealth of information for me.

I think if I had to eat like this all the time I would rather die.

Provides a decent, basic overview. Short chapters make this a quick, easy read. The author and I differ on the process of meditation due to worldview differences, so that's something for the Christian reader to consider, but it is fairly brief and does not detract from the value of the rest of the work. Similar basic information to what you will find in Practical Paleo or The Paleo Approach without going into the deeper scientific explanations found in the latter. An organized resource to jump start AIP if you want something in print rather than random blogs and websites, though probably not much more in depth than what you will find scattered abroad the internet.

Helpful, quick resource on what seems to be a top recommendation for dealing with autoimmune issues, of which I have at least two, perhaps triggered in part by having genetics evolved more for the hunting/gathering lifestyle than for digesting the proteins of agriculture. The author gives lots of online and digital app resource suggestions as well. The full autoimmune protocol is not meant to be a diet for life; the author gives the synopsis of how to carefully test and reintroduce foods.

As Marc Ryan, LAC, points out in his book How to Heal Hashimoto's, conventional medicine really offers very little to autoimmune patients between the time they learn they have an issue and the point at which the target organ becomes so damaged it must be removed (if that's even the kind of damage your autoimmune reaction causes). Medications and surgery do not address the underlying immune dysfunction. He does recommend the paleo autoimmune protocol but offers the gentler suggestion of starting with elimination of gluten, dairy and soy to see if that's enough to help you. Sadly, you really cannot be vegetarian on this protocol and animal ingredients really help heal and nourish autoimmune patients.

This book is such an amazing and helpful guide for starting the AIP or as simply a refresher. It breaks everything down very easily and doesn’t overwhelm the reader with tons of information at once. Eileen was my first go-to podcast/blog when my friend told me about AIP and she has a depth of knowledge that I find incredibly helpful. I can already tell I will be referencing this book many, many times!

A lot of really good information provided in a short, easy to read/understand book. I am still reading The Paleo Approach, but this book allows you to dive in quickly.

This book is a valuable resource for anyone that is struggling with autoimmune disease and wants to change their life by addressing diet and lifestyle factors. Although major dietary and lifestyle changes are never easy, Eileen breaks down the Paleo Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) in a manner that is easily understood, practical, and attainable. I especially appreciated Eileen's straightforward and conversational approach throughout the book. Living with autoimmune disease can be overwhelming and painful at times, which makes even the thought of making major life changes seem insurmountable. But in this book, Eileen strives to simplify the learning the process surrounding the AIP and she provides gentle, compassionate guidance on how to get started.

The book clearly delineates the foods to avoid AND the foods to include, which is an important distinction as it can sometimes be paralyzing if you focus only on the foods that you can't eat. Eileen also addresses the critical lifestyle factors beyond diet, such as stress, sleep, social support, and toxin exposures. I also enjoyed the practical information on traveling on the AIP, navigating AIP holidays, overcoming self-sabotage, and dealing with autoimmune flares.

I certainly wish that I had this book as a resource when I first embarked on my own AIP journey several years ago. It would have saved me a great deal of time and many set-backs along the way. As a person that has experienced first-hand the healing power of the AIP, and as a functional health nurse and real food nutritionist that works with patients with autoimmune disease, the AIP is a powerful tool in managing autoimmune disease. There is growing scientific evidence behind how the AIP works, but the layperson doesn't need to understand the complex science in order to get started. That is what I love about this book--it is a practical, real-world resource for navigating the AIP. I plan to use this book as a patient education tool and recommended reading for my patients with autoimmune disease. Thank you, Eileen, for another wonderful contribution to the AIP community!

I heard about Autoimmune Protocol and wanted to research it. This was one of the first books I decided to read. It is a small book but very informative for foods, info, and websites to research further.

Ok intro to the autoimmune protocol diet. A very short read which is nice for those dealing with the brain fog issues of autoimmune. However it was tough to keep everything read in mind in order to start the diet, and a step by step plan laid out in the book would have been nice. Recommend listing out the steps as you read it if you read this one.
