Sonal Kapoor is a reserved, hardworking entrepreneur running a florist boutique in London. She fights a paradoxical battle between her responsibilities at work and her only family there - her mother. And caught in between these is a story of Sonal's past - a terrible event that got her to flee India. Scars from her troubled past continues to manifest in multitude of ways, reminding her constantly about that horrific event.
Serendipity happens when Dr. Ryan Percy enters her life and Sonal is challenged in ways she had never imagined. Ryan turns out as everything from Sonal's quintessential definition of the man of her dreams – BUT, Ryan too comes to the party with his own baggage from the past. A pivotal piece in the jigsaw of their lives appears to be missing. Could their puzzling lives be ever completed by each other? Do they complete or destroy each other?
Shilpa Menon is from an idyllic island nation called Mauritius where she spent her initial days. She is a qualified Chemical Engineer with a Masters Degree from the University of Cape Town. She lived in South Africa for around a decade, while doing her Bachelors and Masters in Engineering. She then worked in the petroleum industry for a few years and subsequently turned into a serial entrepreneur. She is the founder of the luxury lifestyle brand - 'Jolie'. Besides being a doting, full-time mother, she continues to find the time to manage her export house that deals in a wide array of niche lifestyle products friendly to the environment, a whole host of educational aids/tools and a range of toys for children. Her other interests include baking, painting, photography, travelling and reading. Her quest for the eclectic and that un-quenched desire to walk down a road less traveled took her on a journey, at finding her passion in writing. Scars Do Heal is the first work she has published.

[Edited - Added Author Interview Link] Story in my words : Sonal Kapoor, a successfull professional became rape victim. She left her India and settled in London. After six to seven years of psychological and business struggle she reach to a kind of stable life. Story started a this point though. (don't worry her past is revealed in first 3-4 chapters only). Sonal has made her mind of not getting into anykind of relationship with men. Dr Percy entered into her life with new hope.
With help of Sonal's mom and other friends Percy became Sonal friend. They started meeting on various occasions. But Sonal's past was stopping her to get relationship to next level. During this period her mother get heart attack and Percy took care Sonal and her mother. Sonal open up to Percy during this phase. They fell for each other. From this point onwards, Percy showed her unconditional love which heal her fear and anxiety.
Book was written in Bollywood (Karan Johar or Aditya Chopara) movie style. But for a change is was better efforts for romance genre specially as debut work.
Synopsis: Sonal, an Indian girl leads a spinster life with her mother in England. She runs a flower décor business and is curled inside a circle comprising of a very few friends. According to her, she had a scarred past as she was raped and survived but got severely injured with respect to long term psychological abnormalities. Initially, she denied to move on and to have a healthy life with the man of her dreams, however situation changed slowly and incidents entangled with flowing time nurtured the relationship. Her boyfriend, Dr. Ryan Percy was an expert cardiologist with sharp and defined features, who with his affection and love could start to heal Sonal. He also had a past but Sonal already rekindled love in Ryan. With time and help and many ups and down, they formed a strong bond but future didn’t allow them to maintain it smoothly. The final moment, the ending is better to be kept secret for the sake of you.
My thoughts on “Scars Do Heal”: The book depicts a matured woman who has just crossed her 30’s and has preoccupied her mind to accept any indeterminate affection from unknown, especially from a man in conventional sense. She closed her all windows from so called “love” and tries to avoid any such topic. I would emphasize on this fact, Sonal has been portrayed in a manner that will evoke reader to think of an indian woman who loves her job but deep inside suffers from insecurity. Although, she wants to hold her mother’s hand in old age, her rape takes her back to traumatic moments and she literally gets drowned in the ocean of thoughts.
The author has actually provided an apt detail of Sonal’s character, status, home, office, and environment. She exquisitely gave us a message concerning women safety issues that are now burning in India. On the contrary, she highlights that our faulty education system leaves holes in one’s upbringing and only degrees or a job never validate his real ideas. Some of them still lack the basic respect to other gender that they should learn to even gain his worth as a human.
Unexpectedly, I hit situations where I started to place myself in Sonal’s shoes and take decisions accordingly and compare the result. I pay credits to Ms. Shilpa Menon for that. Luckily, Sonal learned to fight against Rape Trauma Syndrome (RTS), owing to successful cooperation from her psychiatrist and her lover Ryan. But, author intentionally put Sonal in situation where she steps back in worry to face the probable scenario that might stand same with previous dark experiences.
Although, the story can be tagged as a love story, it includes some psychological jargons which give it a medical look. It is informative in the way which will interest anybody from any background. The story is more or less written in autobiography mode and in the last section, the manifestation of Author’s pen, the lovely Sonal has given us a lesson to learn and live. With Sweet-Salty, Happy-Sad moments the story has managed to keep me awake and made me finish it even having a strict schedules with exams around.
I will give “Scars Do Heal” a 4.9 * and .1 is kept because I expect to read the next session of this book as I am still hungry to eat more. :) I hope, everyone will find this review helpful.

Simple story that makes you believe in LOVE and the power to HEAL
The book is too positive for life I thought. LIfe ain't that simple. So, when Baig sir lent the book from me, I happily parted with it. He really enjoyed reading it. He asked me to convey to Shilpa, how he enjoyed the simplicity and positive vibes from the book. When I asked how? He said such simple stories are all around you, that fill you with hope and make you believe in miracles. Then, it got me thinking,LIFE is what we believe it would be. If you just believe, fairytales happen to you too. Hence, I opened the book again, this time without inhibitions or prejudices, and Bravo, i enjoyed it to the core. I fell in love with Ryan. In fact this story has made me introspect my own life and to let go all those preconceived notions, to open up to healing myself from inside to develop positive outlook from outside. TO OPEN UP TO LOVE To be read with open mind Just fall in love and go with the flow
Scars do Heal it's a good book to read which comprises of all things from hate to love. While reading this book I was feeling like watching a movie in front of me. Author had done justice to all the characters mentioned in the book. Story was altogether ok but there where many situations which were predictable. For example, when final starts to get blank calls and threatening messages she would not tell Ryan and he will get to know from somebody else. There were many such situations like this but author kept me glued to the book by her good narration. Overall, it's a good read with good social message for rape victims, how to overcome the past and what happened does not end ur life and life moves on...
I got a copy of this book through Goodreads Giveaway. This book really has a very powerful storyline. The protagonist Sonal Kapoor is very inspiring. The narration creates a bond of love between the story and the reader. What I felt was that this book really made me realize that everryone goes through mental depression. But if you are strong at the core and willing to resist the flow of negativity into your body then stand up! Fight with your negitivity! Let Positivity be victorious. Let Love blossom again. Very well written. Loved it.
*I Received this book as a Giveaway from Goodreads in exchange of an honest Review* Do Scars Heal? ....Does Love conquers all? Yes....It does. Well it did conquer the fears and insecurities of Ms. Sonal Kapoor in her journey to become Mrs. Sonal Percy. Shilpa Menon (the author), has an exceptional talent of story telling, which has made me her FAN. Every twist and turn in the Novel make it more engrossing and one can't pick anything else until one has finished it.
I got this book as goodreads giveaway for free. And I am really happy that I entered it. It was an interesting story without any extra cheesy lines . Its worth a read . And how to cope with Trauma tips described sensitively. I would recommend this book for everyone whether they have faced trauma or not.
If you are a big Bollywood buff and believe in love stories like the ones you see in Karan Johar-Yash Raj films then brace yourself. Shilpa Menon, in her book Scars Do Heal, manages to take you to a ride full of love, emotions and drama.
The story is about two people living in same city not knowing of each other's existence. Sonal Kapoor, a beautiful girl from India, finds solace in running a flower business in London. She is reserved, quite and has less friends. She has no boyfriend neither does her dark past allows Sonal to make one.
Dr. Ryan Percy, a handsome British cardiovascular surgeon. Mature and sensible with a heart made of gold, Ryan is everything a girl wishes for. But he is lonely, not able to recover from the loss of his wife and an unborn child. But destiny plays its part and they meet. And that accidental encounter changes their life forever.
Are they meant for each other? Will they be able to fill that vacuum in each other's life? Is Ryan that man who can help Sonal forget all about her dreadful past? What is this past which makes Sonal so vulnerable whenever she thinks about it? Will they ever be able to make peace with their sufferings and move on? Will there be a happy ending to this love story as well?
It would be really interesting to read how two people, take their relationship status from being complete strangers to husband-wife, facing every challenge coming their way together. The book is an easy read, with simple language. Not exactly a page turner but interesting plot makes it a good time pass. The character of Ryan is way too perfect to be true, you cannot not fall in love with it. Good thing is, author has given equal importance to all the characters in the book, no matter how small or large the role is. Shilpa has very delicately picked up a sensitive subject which you will get to know while reading.
Grammatical and editing errors have always been my cause of concern and sadly this book have some. I wish a little more time was given to it on that front. But the best thing about this book is that it teaches you the true meaning of acceptance, i.e. how to accept life as it comes and move on bravely. As the title suggests, all types of scars heal with time, all you need to do is be strong and believe in yourself.
The title 'Scars Do Heal' confused me because a scar is a mark left on the skin after a wound or an injury has healed and scars a natural part of the healing process. So, how can scars heal? I have been reading and reviewing quite a few novels by new authors, and generally find they are described as highly educated from prestigious institutions, well placed in high positions in India and abroad, and their books already have 5 star reviews from gushing reviewers. But when I get to read the books, I begin to wonder if I am reading the same edition of the same book by the same author. My general advice to these authors is: Even if you are confident that your manuscript, your bundle of joy, is pluperfect, requires no editing and will fetch you all known and unknown prizes, awards and recognitions, take it to your English school teacher for an opinion before you send it for print. After getting your teacher's opinion, decide if you need an editor, and get that editor's improvements approved by the same trusted teacher. The ********** reviews of your well wishers, friends, relatives, co-workers wax eloquent, gushing paeans of your overflowing genius because they (a) may not have read your stuff (b) may be too diplomatic or want to encourage you (c) may be scared of you or (d) may be using the same style and spellings as you (e.g. 'I am sat' is used by some UK authors even in the past tense). 'Scars Do Heal' is the story of a rape survivor who shifts residence from Delhi to London, where she sets up a florist's shop. How did she get a permanent resident and work permit visa? God knows. How did she repatriate funds or find funds for setting up a shop plus living expenses in London? God only knows. By coincidence, she meets a neurosurgeon, a Britisher who woos her, is the dream knight in shining armour, but who uses awkward language more suited to a half educated person. Does she reveal her past to him? If so, how does he react? And do they come together in the end to happily live together ever after? That is the rest of the plot. For a great idea and for writing this book in a fairly interesting manner, she deserves three stars. The author Shilpa Menon is described on the back cover as having a Masters degree (no apostrophe) in Chemical Engineering, entrepreneur, etc. But in the book she has used psychiatrist and psychologist to describe the same person, (and even 'her' British neurosurgeon commits the same blooper), and the protagonist has degrees (yes, plural) in business administration. There are missing spaces, awkward sentences and inappropriate words used: … for some unsolicited reason…; flash-ing; …closed them all in the safe; Sonal, we received…('had secured' would be the right version); …and had all the right to feel that way; Last month, we secured a flower arrangement… ('have received' would be the right version); …my silver beetle (Beetle); After few hours of careful thinking…; …removed his mask and gloves and gave it to the nurse on a tray… (What is 'it'? And was the nurse on a tray?) and the list continues… I thank Shilpa Menon and Goodreads for providing me a free hard copy of 'Scars Do Heal' for an unbiased review. I hope I am not permanently scarred by this book. I am definitely scared to read more from this author.
Author Shipa Menon skilled in depicting a graceful and a compassionate story filled with life traumas, pains, decisions, emotions, betrayal, relationships, confidence, revival, and courage. Where the main character Sonal Kapoor a rape victim struggles to face her unknown and uncertain future, but is blessed with a healing in the form of Dr Ryan percy who supports her through all the thick and thins thus being her greatest emotional support. The story line filled with emotional grips enthralling readers till the end. 'Scars do heal' is a heart touching story of Sonal Kapoor who faces a life tragedy which left her broken down but she tries to repair her broken self while Ryan Percy helps her to heal in the process and later becomes her best friend, a mentor and helps her to be out of her dark phase that she struggles to find a way. The author successfully describes the events, and well crafted scenes that are elegantly presented straight from the heart. A crisped narrative and the understanding between the characters helps the plot engaged and keeps the readers hooked all the time. A thrilling suspenseful plot turns to be an excellent page turner with the best captivating words. This book is gateway for every heart that has undergone trauma. The story will ignite a spark of hope to all the people with broken self-esteem and who faced life tragedies in some form or the other and thus they can look upon into life with positive perception that:- 'Yes scars do have the ability of healing as the time passes and that life matters.' A very well deserved 5star recommended for everyone.
The most amazing book i have ever read! The narration was so perfect that i was able to imagine each and every scene she has described in the book. The male protagonist character was portrayed so well and was in love with that character.
Dr. Ryan Percy, I fall in love with you! He is the superpower of this book. I wish every man could be like him. This book not only shows a positive transformation of a girl but also presents a pure love story. Apart from the story, this book gives a great message which I think every girl can relate. After finishing this book, tears roll down from my eyes so you can imagine how hard this book has touched me. The author has picked up a sensitive subject and brilliantly managed it. This book is fast-paced, exciting and inspiring! Girls go for this, I am sure you are going to love this book.
I Received this book in a Giveaway from Goodreads, hosted by the author. :)
My first thoughts about the book? "Must be great, with a beautiful cover!"
Quite a gripping story from the beginning, Dr. Ryan Percy was the sweetest of all *_* The book is a light-read and very refreshing...
And the Ending! ohmygawd the ending(In India) was the least expected point in the story, and with all the action and the creepiness(well..lol) and love shown at the end, this book actually became a goodread :D Beautiful, gripping, freaky, everything at once!
Overall, I'll give it a 4.5 out of 5. :)
Thanks a lot for hosting the giveaway. Loved it! :)
To sum up:this book makes an emotional read by giving a plausible solution to the issue of rape and in no way can a reader not fall in love with the magnanimous character of Ryan and the courage and confidence filled character of Sonal. The publishing quality of the book(though being a paperback edition) apart from the storyline adds to the overall appeal of the book and doubles the pleasure of reading
I won this book as a part of the Goodreads Giveaway. You can read the complete review of this book on my blog !
This book is a gem in the sense that the author tackles different subjects from trauma to social and cultural differences by passing through love and success. At a critical point in time where BREXIT is the talk of the town in UK, it is a certainty that cultural differences and tolerance will be at stake.
Very interesting book. Each page you read , makes you want to read more and more to know what will happen next. I liked the positive side , the strength of the main character to move on in life with the help of a friend. Looking forward to read more ... a second novel from Shilpa
Absolutely brilliant. Kudos to the author for writing on such a sensitive subject. The story was gripping and very beautiful. A must read for all romance lovers.
"Scars tell untold stories and each of us have scars... Very often the deepest wounds leave scars that cannot be seen. A scar keeps haunting you and can inflict pain on your conscious mind."
The author has chosen a brave and important topic in our lives. First of all, kudos to the author. The characters are strong and let me get in their shoes (except for the protagonist and it is impossible for me.) The author was able to put a brilliant point which I liked a lot - "Life is not a battle. It always the mind which battles."
Although, I got irritated by infinite use of "angel" and "baby", it is a nice story. Even with a twist in the tale, it is a bit predictable.
Being a storyteller myself, I realise that there are some books you would not read for the language or with the critical mind to see if it matches your expectation of your best book ever, but you would just read to relate to the story of the words and behind them as well and be grateful to how the author portrayed a pressing matter in such a positive and hopeful manner.
Rape victims or abused women often lack self-esteem and the confidence to be their own selves. Often, they resort to a false display of ‘being happy’ while each night they struggle from trauma and the incapacity to see a bright future. This book however comes like a fresh breeze to induce hope and confidence. Life does throw you down at times but does not mean it cannot help you stand up again. We just need to lend some courage to fight whatever is blocking us from enjoying life again. There is no shame in asking for help and no shame in accepting your experiences. We are built from our experiences and the good news is that nobody is really alone; we are all somewhere on the same boat with similar stories.
Sonal’s story reminds us that if we can share the same struggle, we can definitely share the hopes and the successes as well. I fully recommend the book but I do believe this type of book should be read without any kind of prejudices or pre-conceived ideas.
Well,My first goodreads giveaway gift and I have thoroughly enjoyed the book.I was really excited to read the book and always felt that the book never comes to an end and I keep on reading, which actually took some time to write this review .At the end of the book,I am having such a satisfying and fulfilling feeling that I can't really explain.A very good read and liked every bit of it.This book actually teaches you how to make peace with your past and move on.Everyone has scars, some way or the other but learning to move on,is a very difficult feat to achieve. Accepting to move on, in life will make all the difference. Sonal is the prime character of the book and how things change around her and how she heals over time is beautifully portrayed .The book kept its suspense till the fag end and will let readers anticipating till the end.All the characters are very well articulated which always make the scenes come in front of your eyes and can be visualised.Thank you goodreads giveaway for such a lovely gift.
Picked this up recently when I visited a used book store. Little did I know that I have answers to questions that haunted me long.
I never heard about the book or the author before I picked this book. There was an institution and it pushed me to pick it up even without reading the synopsis.
Scars do heal is a beautifully written book. The protagonist is a rape victim. She changes everything in her life to let go of her past but she never succeeds until she falls in love again (which she never expected).
Love gently lets her go of her past and reforms her into a new person. She holds on to hope so strong. Life is challenging for a rape victim and this book is so beautifully written that it makes one believe that there cannot be anything that a loved one can't cure.
Won ‘Scars do heal’ as part of the Good reads giveaway. Thanks to Good reads and the author.
The plot of a victim and a survivor, Sonal who because of her tragic past migrates to London and begin a fresh start. She is not able to get into relationship and trust it to work. She then meets Dr. Ryan Percy who accepts her and helps her deal with her past. He helps her realize to make peace with her past to move ahead in life. Is she ready to accept her past and move ahead in life......the story reveals it.
The story in the beginning was fairly interesting, going along it got predictable. A sensitive issue has been well told by the author. Dr. Percy is surely a like-able character of the story.
I feel Shilpa Menon has explained the fears of a rape victim very aptly. We can connect with the lives of Sonal, Ryan, etc. and the story because the story seems so real, unfolding in front of your eyes. The author has really understood what is RTS, the feelings of a rape victim and must have done a good amount of research to understand the thought process and fears of a Rape victim. I loved the Epilogue. Angels do come in our life to heal our scars which could be physical or emotional. And I also belive Scars Do Heal.
I liked this book a lot! Quite a Gripping and unique story. The title scars do heal is very befitting. The author has beautifully conveyed a message of hope and healing. I would definitely want to see more books from this author.
I have got the kindle version of this book and I must say it's a true page turner so much so that I finished the book in one day... the book speaks about the scars and it's a sensitive topic. Kudos to the author for choosing this topic. Totally recommend !!!!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book - unique story and easy to read. Good to learn about what all a rape victim goes through and loved the aspect of hope and healing.
A simple book with the basics in check! Scars do heal.... A positive and warm book that makes one believe in love and faith .. A re-read kinda book for sure !
