Leaving town, heading to the Greek Isles without telling husband or friends, is heady medicine for a failing marriage. Seduced by Grecian sun and sky, Jenna innocently obtains an ancient urn that tangles her into the web of a criminal world more sinister than she ever imagined. Romance is always afoot in the Greek Isles and Jenna gets a large helping with the seductive Nikos. Family is important in Greece, and Nikos helps Jenna learn all the richness it brings, and pass it on to the next generation.
Twenty-five years later, Allie takes this same journey, and the lives of a mother and daughter intertwine. Twisty as the streets in a Greek island village, full of unexpected characters and nasty villains, Jenna’s Journey will keep you turning pages far into the night.
Julie Ryan was born in a small mining village in South Yorkshire. Not venturing too far from home, she studied French Language and Literature at Hull University, where she also trained as a teacher. Then the wanderlust kicked in and she lived and worked in France, Poland, Thailand and Greece. This broadening of the mind has had an enormous impact on her writing. She now lives in rural Gloucestershire with her husband, son and two cats. She is a bookaholic with a one-click addiction. Her Greek Island Mystery series includes 'Jenna's Journey' newly republished by Booktrope , 'Sophia's Secret' and 'Pandora's Prophecy'. Each can be read as a standalone.
Sometimes a relationship has an expiration date. Jenna has finally seen that her husband has his own agenda and she is the afterthought. The always steady and predictable Jenny has decided she has had enough and step one is an impromptu trip to Greece, something no one would think her capable of. Life begins anew as she becomes engrossed in the Greek culture, the art and the people. Tom, a fellow traveler seems to be connected at her hip, but why? When she discovers a small souvenir shop with beautiful replicas of Greek art, she is gifted with a unique piece that could mean the death of her. This piece is not as it seems, it is part of a smugglers ring’s booty, but one mistake put it in her hands and people will die, unbeknownst to her.
When a handsome Greek man makes her feel alive and cherished, Jenna feels she has discovered true love, but is she just another tourist attraction for a native to play with? Will time reveal her true path? What will she find at the end of her dreams?
Julie Ryan’s Jenna’s Journey is at once, chaotic, and sometimes a rough road to follow. Is that representative of Jenna’s life? Julie Ryan gives us Jenna, a woman who has never taken the road less traveled and who has put herself on a twisted path on foreign soil, all in an effort to redeem her soul from the a marriage that has wounded her. Has she found true love or a dangerous mystery going on around her, as she remains clueless?
Ms. Ryan has written an amazingly twisted tale, part intrigue, part romance and part coming of age. With the cluster of characters involved sometimes it was hard to discern who would make the biggest impact or if they were a clever camouflage for the events going on behind the scenes. The pace is steady, the feeling dark and confused, but always Jenna is looking for a life of happiness denied her.

Jenna is unhappy in her marriage to say the least. She is dreaming of a family but it seems her husband Greg is unwilling to become a father. Frustrated and unsure about the future of their relationship, she books a Greek holiday on a whim and boards the flight without a word to her husband. While he stays behind confused and remorseful, Jenna embarks on an exhilarating new adventure that initially involves delightful sightseeing and her favorite pastime of people watching. The fellow tourists in her group become an ideal object for hilarious observation. Her holiday is worry-free and lighthearted until a tiny, yet precious urn lands on her hands to complicate life for her especially after the inevitable Greek Adonis makes his grand entrance. The author only hints on the fact that this is not your average holiday love story by referring to her novel as a mystery romance however, what lurks between the front and back cover is much more sinister than that. What we have here is a proper crime story with a ruthless criminal on the loose, a ring of antiquity smugglers, a police detective sniffing on their tracks and even a baffling murder to have readers gasp in shock, rendering them unwilling to put the book down. There is even a tiny paranormal twist, just to pepper the whole thing with the right amount of pixie dust. Not that the story is in particular need of magic – it would be preposterous to even suggest that with an enchanted Greek island being the backdrop of this whimsical story, transporting the reader right in the middle of it all with tantalizing descriptions of exotic Greek dishes, the murmur of the sparkling sea and the caressing sunlight on the characters’ blissful faces.
I found the plot quite an intricate puzzle that involves a parade of minor characters who come and go without always contributing much to the story but are rather there to provide a fully clear insight into everyday life on a Greek island. Being a Greek myself I can vouch for the clarity of the conveyed feelings and for the genuine way in which everything has been described throughout based on my own experiences. Furthermore, the author’s occasional reference to the Greek quirkiness related to the evil eye as well as our obsession with offering food and drink generously to guests, made me chuckle repeatedly with a mixture of amusement and pride.
Having relayed all the wonderful points that I found in the story, there is only one side to it that I wish I could change. I wonder if the author became so engrossed in her own intriguing story that perhaps it evaded her to be more clear on certain parts unless of course this was intended for her own reasons. Maybe it is just a personal preference of mine but I do like to end a book with all my questions fully answered. However in this case, there are a couple of gray areas that are left up to the reader to decide and ponder on. I am sure there are many people out there who would love that. As I said, I am guessing it is a matter of preference and as the book left me with a tiny feeling of dissatisfaction for this reason, I am giving it a score of 4 stars instead of 5. Having said that, for the intelligence and complexity of the plot, for the believability of characters and situations, for the overall chuckles involved and for the surprise elements that continuously kept me on my feet, the book deserves to pass in all other respects with flying colors.
Jenna’s Journey by Julie Ryan Reviewed by Lucy Pireel
After reading this book twice I still was puzzled how a writer can create such real-life characters and set such great scenery while at the same time have me scratching my head for all the inconsistencies throughout the book. There’s unexplained time lapses, unexplained acts by characters, sudden plot twists that have nothing to do with the story. I mean to plug a hole a sudden ghost pops up, another strange thing is the remark that a certain character is hired to follow another character. How could he be, when that character didn’t even know that she was going on the trip, let alone go to that store. And the why of the following or who his boss is is never really explained, or followed up on. Plants die within a few days. A trip is planned and yet the fridge is being stocked for a character about to return, while the one who’s stocking up on groceries is travelling to pick up the one who is supposed to return. I know it sounds confusing, but that’s the effect it had on me while reading. Then there’s no pick-nick packed and they swim to shore in their undies, where they are suddenly having a meal? I mean where did that come from? The cat gets a bowl of water and wolfs it down as if it’s food. Don’t get me wrong the book reads like a breeze, but the inconsistencies did trip me up. It’s throughout the whole book in the little things as well as bigger holes and yet the author shows clearly she knows how to spin a yarn. It’s just she pins so much yarns in this one story it’s becoming entangled and too messy to still be believable. And then when you think you’ve had about all the twists you can get, there’s part three and all suddenly changes. Alternate reality pops up. One hand I do like the story and rooted for the characters, but as I said there’s also so much that just should be addressed to, to stop the reader from being thrown out off it that I am torn how to rate this, because on the other hand I wouldn’t want to read it again, or recommend it as is.
When Jenna takes herself off to Greece the last thing she expects is to become embroiled in an old murder case and artefact smuggling.
Not usually one to read mysteries, I really enjoyed Jenna's Journey. I loved the setting, which the author drew perfectly and I really liked the way the book is split into three parts, enabling me to better appreciate the unfolding love story as much as I did the mystery. And I especially like the way each character (however minor they might first seem) is cleverly linked to events both past and present.
The unique setting drew me to this book initially, I loved the idea of reading a mystery set in Greece. The author's writing, to me, read almost like this was a women's fiction novel, as much as it did a cozy mystery. The plot was intriguing, as were the characters, and I'd be very interested in reading a second book in the series.
I'm glad I looked back through some of the older books on my TBR pile this weekend, because I've enjoyed spending some time in Greece with Jenna as she experiences the local delights in a well-needed escape from her previously unhappy lifestyle. The wonderful descriptions of Greek scenery and traditions add to the suspense and mystery within this tale, which all makes for an interesting read.
I was lucky enough to win this book in a competition & boy was I lucky from the start the storyline shines through. Jenna is in a not all that happy marriage, she loves Greg but she so badly wants to have a baby but it seems Greg isn't as keen & wants to stay how they are, him working & going out with his friends, Jenna in her teaching jobs with her circle of friends but rarely if ever do they meet each other's friends. Greg knows the names of a couple if her friends but think if you asked him about them then he would come unstuck as the only people important to him are himself, his friends & his job.
Then one evening after yet another argument Jenna decides she needs to get away & ends up booking a holiday in Greece flying out the next day, she leaves a message for her job that she needs some time off leaves a note for Greg saying she's going away for a few days not telling him where she's going. This is where the story really gets you going as this one last minute choice leads Jenna into more trouble than she could ever imagine, it could even cost her her life or could it be the start of her dream life? But I hate spoilers in reviews so all I'm going to say is if you want a nice romance story, with a bit of crime & mystery thrown in then you definitely can't go wrong with this book. One little warning once you start this book make sure you have a few hours with nothing to do as it's definitely one of those " just one more chapter"
My one little gripe, maybe because I'm so picky about mistakes is that in the end they call a woman, the victims husband but an easy enough mistake to have not spotted as you get so into the story it's easy to miss & I may only have noticed it if I hadn't accidentally gone back a page & read it again.
Jenna's Journey is a story of self-discovery, second chances, and fate tangled in a web of mystery and intrigue to create an all around captivating read.
Jenna decides she needs a break from her husband and the loneliness she feels even in his presence. Without telling a soul she's books a vacation package for one to Greece. Hoping to rediscover herself, Jenna soon realizes she must also make some difficult decisions about her future if she's ever going to find the happiness she longs for. However, things are about to become a whole lot more complicated. During a tourist outing Jenna is given an ancient urn by a desperate old man which ultimately puts her life in danger. On top of all that Jenna begins sensing a paranormal presence around her and she feels herself falling for a gorgeous Greek local whose showering her with attention. Just when Jenna thinks she's uncovered the life she's longed for an accident changes it all.
Fantastic characters, absorbing plot, and more twists and turns than a corkscrew, Jenna's Journey is a novel you'll find difficult to put down. One of my favorite aspects is the author's exquisite attention to detail when describing Jenna's travels. I felt as though I was exploring Greece right along with her. I also liked how the author held back just enough information so that I was unsure of how the plot would unfold. The "what if" section is something most of us can identify with as Jenna contemplates what could have been. I truly enjoyed Jenna's Journey and found it to be a wonderful read with a little something for everyone. I am looking forward to book 2 in A Greek Island Mystery Series.
After Jenna has an argument with her husband Greg, she flees to a Greek island hoping to be able to think about how she wants her life to continue and to hopefully start writing the novel for which she has so many ideas flowing around in her head. Once she arrives in Greece, matters get a lot more complicated. Will she return to England or will the Greek island steal her heart?
I must admit that I didn’t read the blurb for this book, but straight away delved into the storyline not knowing anything about the book at all. For the first few pages I thought I was reading a simple story of a woman travelling to a Greek island to re-discover herself. However, after the first few chapters, I was extremely surprised (in a good way), when the story turned into a mystery novel including a drug ring, domestic abuse, accidents and even murder.
The plot and all the sub-plots (there are quite a few of these) start unraveling from lots of different angles. My mind didn’t stand still for one second trying to figure out who was responsible for the accidents and murder and how the whole storyline puzzle pieces would fit together in the end. This book is extremely well written and more than once was I surprised by the way the story unfolds. I had my guesses of what would happen next – but I was wrong every time!
Jenna’s Journey is a fantastic mystery novel with a beautiful underlying romantic element and plots that will keep you guessing to the end.
I received a free ecopy of this book for an honest review.
This is a difficult book to review because it has some really good elements, some not so good, and some I still haven’t decided on.
After 5 years, Jenna decides on the spur of the moment that she needs to get away from her husband, Greg, for a while to think after she realizes that he doesn’t want children. She goes to Greece without telling anyone where she is going, and she has quite an adventure, including romance and being followed by criminals.
I enjoyed the author’s writing style for the most part. I did do some skipping of paragraphs at times when Jenna was thinking about her relationship with Greg. She decided over and over that the best thing would be to leave him. Although that’s actually how many of us come to a decision, going over and over it in our heads, it was a bit too much to read over and over. I enjoyed the descriptions of Greece. They were well done but not over done.
There were some questions left unanswered which I would have liked resolved. There were also some inconsistencies that confused me. I liked that Jenna had a choice to make and we get to see the results of both choices. The end, however, had me flabbergasted. I can’t say that I like how it ended, but because of the end I did think about this book for a couple of days trying to figure out exactly what the author was trying to convey.
An Island adventure in a beautifully setting...I was lucky enough to read an advance review copy of Jenna's Journey, author Julie Ryan's debut novel. This adventure takes place in Greece and there are twists and turns you will not expect. Jenna unexpectedly runs away from her life with Greg, but it's not until 25 years later that we discover exactly what happened to her, when her daughter Allie follows in her footsteps. It's an idyllic setting for the story that unfolds. There is mystery, there is intrigue and there is a sense of Jenna searching for something that will make her life fall into place. Greg thinks it's all because Jenna wants to have children and he isn't sure; he might never be sure. But it goes much deeper than that and Jenna's journey is one of discovery about the person she is, as much as the mystery she finds herself embroiled in. Wonderful setting, expect the unexpected...
"Jenna's Journey" has an intricate plot that is nicely woven together. The problem is the first twenty percent of this novel was difficult to get through. There was too much talk about the relationship between Jen and her husband. I got the picture after a brief discussion. Some was need to develop their characters, but there were paragraphs and paragraphs of it. This took away from the mystery and intrigue that had been introduced.
Despite that and some rough transitions, a bit of head hopping, and some minor inconsistencies, the plot was well conceived and the characters were well developed. Two things I especially liked in the story were the inclusion of Greek culture and the two different endings that showed the paths Jen had the option of taking. This was quite clever. I was kept wondering if one path would have lead to disaster. But, you'll have to read for yourself to find out.
Julie Ryan truly has a gift for descriptive writing and I loved reading how she wrote about Greece, the islands and the people. She made those things really come alive and made me think she must have been a travel writer in another life. I enjoyed Jenna and the other characters very much. They were well rounded and made me want to see them find happiness in their lives. I was pulled into the story right away and thought I'd probably run off somewhere if I was married to someone like Jenna was.
I have to say that I didn't love the ending...it seemed odd to me and just didn't do it for me. Obviously an author can't make everyone happy so some other readers may absolutely love it. I certainly wouldn't be adverse to reading the second in the series and honestly think that as a debut novel, this was done well.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.
When Jenna decides on a whim to go to Greece, she's trying to escape her failing marriage. Will Greg let her go so easily though? Can she make a new future for herself and how did she get involved in an antiques smuggling ring? Is fellow holidaymaker Tom all he seems and will it be happy ever after with Nikos? It's not until twenty-five years later that some of the questions are finally answered. ******* I enjoyed reading the book very much. It started as a promise of a journey to remember and it kept that promise.
Characters and places are written well and most of them I was able to see in my mind reading it, although I was never in Greece.
Because of so many things that happens to the main character and the unusual ending, this story gives you some material to think even when you put it down, because you have already finished it...
Jenna's Journey (A Greek Island Mystery) by Julie Ryan
Jenna decides to take a trip to Greece to get away from her husband Greg. Her marriage is not going so well, and she needs time to think things through. While there she finds(herself) twisted into an antiques smuggling ring, falls for a native named Nikos, and has major life altering decisions to make.
I liked Jenna, as a young woman the problem she faces are real. I loved the descriptions of Greece and some of the culture. There were a few minor characters that had a role in the story. At a few points I was a bit confused, but overall the plot was very interesting and good. I recommend to those who love drama/romance/mystery.
Very enjoyable book although seemed to take me a while to get to grips with all the characters in it and how any of them were linked up.
As I continued reading, more of it made sense and it started to have that un-put-downable quality to it.
Was a bit surprised with the going back and forth in time with very few indicators as even which year we were still in would have helped, even as a chapter subheading.
I'm curious enough about the author and my love of Greece is strong enough that I would definitely have a look at the second book in the series.
This is the second book I’ve read by Julie Ryan. The first was the 3rd in the series, Pandora’s Prophecy. Usually, I like to read a series in order but in this case, I think it was helpful reading the books out of sequence. Julie’s description of the settings in the Greek Islands was so vivid, I could imagine myself being right there having everything unfolding around me. The love story and mystery were skillfully interwoven with the physical setting making it an enjoyable read.
I really enjoyed the beginning of the book, and thought that it started off very fast-paced and hooked me quickly. The scenery is amazing and so descriptive, and there is a little mystery thrown in here as well, which I really enjoyed. The ending threw me a little bit with the "choose your own ending" vibe, and made me feel a little unsettled, like I didn't actually know how the novel ended, but overall, one that I really enjoyed.
This story had plenty of twists and turns, it did dart around a bit from place to place and character to character but I could not guess what was going to happen next. It is a slow paced book but with lots of description which I enjoyed. This is a must for those of you that love a romantic story set in a beautiful country. It made me want to go on holiday to Greece.
This was a very different book. I wasn't expecting it to be the way it was. There were so many twists and turns that I will admit confused me at times but all in all it is a good book. I love how Greece was where it took place.
I liked this story. It had a little bit of everything. The flow of the story was good linking the past history to the present. Liked Jenna. She was a great character. I recommend this book. I received a copy for honest review.
I received this book for my honest review. I loved this book. I loved Jenna's story. It was a amazing book to read and follow along on her many adventures and how she overcome them. After 25 years Allies on the same path.
I really enjoyed reading Julie's debut novel. An interesting plot, engaging characters and a romantic location. I wish I'd taken this on holiday with me. It would make a great holiday read.
I picked this thinking it would be a quick lite read and it wasn't. I love Sara Alexi's books and thought a Greek Island Mystery sounded promising. I've given it 2 stars because I did manage to finish it. The author has promise with some really good, descriptive passages. But the storyline and structure are all over the place. She spends pages writing about some things that add nothing to the story. Then my goodness wh jumps ahead and ends the book only to go back and write an alternate ending. And what are we to make of the ending to that ending? I may give her a second chance but if she messes with the story this much I'll give it a pass. The book would be fine if structured like a simple love story with some mystery thrown in. All that extra intrigue and extra characters really do not add anything to the story.
I downloaded this as I am going on holiday to Greece and like to read books set in the location I am visiting. I couldn’t get into this book, though, as the writing was too simplistic for my taste.
A nice story and I did in fact enjoy the read. However On occasions I found the time lapse somewhat difficult to understand. E.g. Comments would be made which suggested Jenna had been there for some time but in fact had only arrived a few days before. These inconsistencies were somewhat annoying and perhaps a good editor would have sorted them out. I also fail to understand the two alternative endings. Very strange.
Jenna’s Journey (A Greek Island Mystery #1), by Julie Ryan, first intrigued my interest when it spoke of a disgruntled and unhappy Jenna fleeing from foggy England, to sunny Greece. As she enjoys her vacation tour, she is accidentally mistaken as a mule for an antiquity smuggling ring, and finds herself at the top of the ruthless leader’s hit list. As Jenna unknowingly walks down a path of danger she becomes the object of two men’s attention: the handsome, Greek, Nikos and the attractive, British Tom. While both men seem nice and interesting, Jenna is not sure whom she can trust; is Nikos really as nice as he seems or just looking for another tourist to add to his accomplishments? Tom seems to have picked Jenna out from the beginning of the tour, but while seeming like a great guy there is definitely something he is hiding. But what? Is anything in Greece really as it seems? Twenty years later, Jenna’s daughter Allie visits Greece to put to rest the ghosts of her mother’s past, but is she prepared for what she will find out? Pair that with a cold case crime, and a detective that is intent of solving the murder; this book seemed like a winner. Unfortunately, this book was not quite all it promised to be. While it does involve a mystery and international smuggling scheme, that is actually a rather small plot point in the scheme of the novel. The smuggling is brought in, and deeply captures the reader’s attention as they wonder about what will happen next; but it is quickly stalled, forgotten, and sewn up with a bow in the end. What the novel really turns out to be is a story of a women going to a foreign place, finding a foreign lover, and learning “about herself and what she what she wants to do with her life”, ending up with said lover and living in that foreign country. Now that type of story isn’t bad, but I was sorely disappointed as from the summary I expected something quite different. The character of Jenna was interesting and enjoyable as I thought the author presented a realistic character in a woman disappointed with life and making a change, yet still doubting herself and leaving the familiar. I also thought the way the she fought with herself over whether to leave her husband or return to work things out was also done well. Jenna has serious problems with her husband, and his emotional abuse, but at the same time still remembers the good they had together and wonders if she may be reacting too quickly. The only thing that I could not stand was the way the author wrote the Jenna and Nikos romance. In the book, Tom is a sweet, nice, handsome guy from England with a great job in antiquities. It seems as if he isn’t being one hundred percent honest about his job, but maybe he is just trying to sound more interesting. However, Jenna finds him so questionable and wants to avoid him as he is “too interested” in her, meaning there must be something wrong with him. However, the equally enigmatic Nikos is viewed “more honest” by Jenna and the man she decides to go away with. Author if you want your heroine with the sexy, Greek guy; just be honest and say that is why. Don’t try and convince your reader it is about his “personality” or something, when we can see right through that, you want the “exciting” one. The Allie part of the story doesn’t have that much of an impact on the novel, being more of a footnote than anything else. The same goes for the detective, who is given a great build up of character, but the author lacked in the follow through, having hardly doing any detecting but having the answer just given to him. I didn’t really enjoy this story and would give it two out of five stars.
Beautifully written, I was confused by the end. It made me try to analyze Part 2 of the storyline. We begin with a present day glimpse into the first day of Jenna's daughter's journey in Greece and then dive right into Jenna's during the 80s. Each chapter is dated, so you're not lost and it doesn't go back and forth between past and present.
The build up for suspense and mystery seemed slow paced for me, but Ryan's writing brings depth to Greece and to Jenna herself. I felt myself there with her and felt the emotions she was going through. I cried like a baby during the first part of Part 2 and was surprised within the second half of Part 2. Jenna's character was solid in the story, but there were characters being brought in left and right with not enough back story or with just a drop of a subject change. However, they were relevant and brought closure for me as far as the mystery was concerned.
Jenna's trip to Greece starts off as a getaway after a big fight with her husband Greg. She finally finds herself and realizes that they don't have the same goals for their marriage. Jenna meets Nick and is swept off her feet while Tom (a fellow holiday goer with her tour company) befriends her and is falling for her. Cluelessly getting caught up in illegal trading and with mysterious things happening to and around her are Nick and Tom the culprit? As clueless as she is? Or do they genuinely have feelings for her?
The mystery that involves Jenna still has me confused to a degree. Almost as if it happened when she was unconscious. I thought I had closure, but the epilogue is making me wonder. Which I really like, even if I'm left confused.
I would recommend this if you like well built main characters and a bit of slight confusion but closure for your mystery adventures. There were moments that made me laugh, gasp and cry, which I love in books I'm reading. I'll actually re-read this again, maybe around March to see if I missed anything first go around.
