Spooky and suspenseful...but also dated and a bit cheesy. I have to admit that I only bought this book because I love seances and this title (and cover!) totally won me over. I'd never heard of this gothic horror series before, but I might (might) read another one—lol!
WHAT I LOVED:
💜 Light and easy writing style
💜 Great characters (though I sometimes wanted to roll my eyes at some of them) with distinct personalities. The "ghost" of Tildy was the most memorable, even though this character is dead.
💜 Fantastic ominous atmosphere
💜 Not at all gory or gross. I wouldn't classify it as horror, but as gothic suspense
💜 The story is set in a small fictional town in New Hampshire (the state where I live!)
Although this novel was a bit unbelievable at times, I allowed myself to go along with the story...and so I enjoyed it more. There was a very surprising ending which I wasn't prepared for (in a good way), but the conclusion was also a little "iffy".
Overall, I got a kick out of reading this eerie vintage paperback and it would be the perfect book to read on the few days leading up to Halloween night. Although Halloween itself is not celebrated in the book and is actually set in the late summer, it has that perfect creepy feel. Give it a try!
