This is one of those books that's difficult to rate. It was well done, but I think it was aimed more at novice dog owners who realize that they need to teach their dog proper manners. I found this book to be very basic, and very common sense, but it was helpful in places, and did provide some good insights and tips that I've already applied in the daily training of our young dog.
Common problems like housebreaking issues, excessive barking, and chewing were addressed, but my little dog's (ahem) pet issue, territorial aggression toward other dogs, was not addressed. If you've got a new dog who hasn't really got any big issues, then this book might be a great training guide. If you've got a smart dog who is good most of the time but who has a significant problem issue (not naming any names, Amy), then this book might not be quite enough. Still, it provides a good training foundation, and certainly no harm can come from reading it.
I see a lot of low reviews for this book, but they comment the book isn’t for advanced dog people. Just because you are the wrong audience doesn’t make it a bad book! I thought this had great information. As someone who fosters dogs, I can tell you many people should read this “common sense” book.
Another book which seems to deny that people who already own a dog will want to read a book about taking care of a dog. Not everyone needs help with choosing and training a puppy. Spare parts of the book were helpful with my 10 year old dogs but most seemed to be a pre-owner's manual.
Fun narration. Especially useful for families to listen together. Children will delight in the "dog narrations" while parents get great advice about the care and training of dogs.
