Three hundred years can change many things, but love is not among them.
Forbidden to claim the woman he loves as his mate, Gabriel established a yearly meet with Jael to satisfy their hunger for each other. Time has not diminished the vampires’ need, nor made the pain of every other day more bearable. Christmas Eve together might not be much, but pretending for one night that they can belong together is the only way either knows how to survive.
Except this Christmas, Gabriel can't go on pretending. Living for one night is no way to live, and he is determined that he and Jael will see the new day together. The only question is whether after all this time she’s prepared for the consequences of saying yes.
Rosalie Stanton is the retired penname of an award-winning author Holly Denise. All previously released Rosalie Stanton books have been or will be released as Holly Denise, and no new Rosalie Stanton titles are forthcoming.
Okay, I confess -- Rosalie is a very dear friend of mine. However, that does not take away from my absolute enjoyment of this very naughty, very heartfelt nibble. Two vampires forced apart by law, unable to confess their love to each other or create a life together, use one night each year to fill the gaping hole in their existences. Got your attention? If so, definitely check out Dark Solace.
Novelettes are tough creatures. Authors have a very limited word count, a story to tell, and characters to develop. For some readers, there just isn't enough "ummph" to walk away satisfied. As for me...Dark Solace is exactly what I look for in hot PNR novelettes. There is a back history that isn't overly explained but provides just enough insight. There are two protagonists that you grow to care for and want to see together. And there is an element of danger that, although it isn't faced in the most conventional sense that you'd see in a full length work, remains when the story ends and leaves you wondering about these star crossed lovers.
So yeah, I can't say enough about Dark Solace or Ms. Stanton -- aside from this...
*cough* Why wasn't I asked to crit this? It's okay, you know I still love you. :)
Rosalie Stanton is the best author I've ever read. I normally don't like short stories because there isn't enough time to develop the characters, but that wasn't a problem for her. From start to finish, I couldn't wait to find out what happened to Jael and Gabriel. It was hot and steamy, but with enough plot that you actually cared about the characters and not just what they were doing. I look forward to reading anything she publishes in the future!
Bought it the day it was released. Read it right away and loved it, as I do all of Rosalie Stanton's works. I love the premise of this novella, how well the story progresses and how it ends. The characters were riddled with strife and needs, and the romantic angst, the taste of the forbidden, made this a great, well-paced read! Definitely recommend it!
