Once again Amy Jarecki has done a wonderful highlander romance. Such strong characters and exciting plots never the same. She really brings her characters to life, I can't stop reading it and then sorry I have finished it! Can't wait for her next book.

This is book one in the "Highland Defender" series by Amy Jarecki.
Hugh MacIain hides his identity while imprisoned in Fort William hellhole. About year and half after being there Hugh gets really sick and in bad shape. The other prisoners complain so much about Hugh health that the Guards take him to the "Dr" there. That when Hugh meets Charlotte Hill who helps him to get better and helps him to escape. Charlotte is the leaders daughter there and is a lady. But Hugh is taken with her and can't help but start to have feelings for her and her for him.
This is a great Highlander Love Story that I enjoyed so much an hope that you will too.

A few things you should know about me...
First, I have no willpower when it comes to Historical Romances set in/around Scotland.
Why, you ask...
because kilts
I'm not ashamed of this fact, but I tell you this because my ratings in this sub-genre are not to be trusted. Sometimes they are totally in line with non-biased readers, but more often then not, they aren't. Try not to judge me too harshly, I've at least given you a heads up.
Second, when reading a Historical Romance (Scottish setting or not) historical accuracy is not important to me. I tend to group these stories in a fantasy-lite type category in my mind and I have different expectations for fantasy.
So having said that, I thought the author did a great job weaving together actual historical events and fictitious storylines. I liked the characters and despite a few slow points in the middle I felt like the pacing was appropriate. The H was swoony and the h didn't make me want to kick a highland pony so this was a win for me.
I liked the story and the author's writing style enough that I have already downloaded the next in this series and the first in TWO other series by this author. So, I mean, that in itself should say something even if my ratings can't be trusted.

I have loved so many by this author, Amy Jarecki novels but I think this one is my favorite yet! As this is the first book in a her brand new Highlander defender series it one not to be missed. It blends true factual Scottish history with a fiction romance and adventure, which is my absolutely my favorite kind of read! I think this is Amy Jarecki's best novel yet and if you are like me a Jacobite in your heart, it is one you definitely don't want to miss! A spectacular book that will live you feeling rather satisfied! Definitely one for the keeper and reread shelf, drool worthy, a rare magnificent masterpiece of a read!

It start off where a prisoner of Fort William in Scotland and how a Scottish prisoner captured at the Battle of Dunkeld, Hugh MacLeod, who is actually Hugh Maclain MacDonald, who is actually the heir to Glencoe lands and of one of the most feared jacobite rebellious clans in in Scotland, Clan Maclain Abrach of Glencoe is being mistreated. It's the same old story if you support the exiled Stuart King you suffer, for you support the new worthless deceiving King you are rewarded! Of course Hugh was smart enough to know being son and heir he would of been murdered some time ago so he gives a false name. One of their enemy clans of course. He had been living in the Fort Williams hell pit for prisoners for nearly two years and treated like an animal locked in chains and manacles and only given gruel twice a day and dirty water or ale to survive! As he comes into the surgery with the flux near death, no thanks to the prejudice cruel Doctor and would of died if hadn't been for an angel, one English woman named Charlotte Hill. Charlotte had been assisting the Doctor, but what Hugh isn't aware is she is his warden's daughter Colonial Hill who is the Governor of his hell prison at Fort William!
Charlotte disagrees with the way her father is treating the prisoners and voices her opinion, plus her father is trying to convince her of a match between she and the cruel Doctor of Fort William. A man she feels nothing for except contempt and hates how he has no compassion or sympathy for the prisoners he treats no matter how ill. As she tries to help this ill treated Jacobite prisoner, she starts to feel something for him and in the end she helps him escape, it will be nine month until they meet again. No one recognizes him, but Miss Hill as they have both fallen for each other and this is where the story gets juicy as of course the son and heir of one of the most feared Jacobite clans in all of Scotland and the daughter of the Governor of Fort William is a match no one would agree to. Yet this does not stop the couple from trying until a horrendous tragedy tears them apart.
Amy Jarecki does it again weaving true factual history in a riveting Highland adventure full of drama, suspense, mystery, murder, betrayal, passion and love from start to finish! Readers will be rooting for this star crossed couple, but won't be able to see a happy outcome with feuding clans, and enemies and boulders at every turn. The Fearless Highlander is beautifully written, but have your kleenex nearby as some scenes had me tearing up, tugging at my heartstrings and I just couldn't put it down! I highly recommend you read The Fearless Highlander a truly captivating book readers will absolutely love! If your heart belongs to Scotland you truly don't want to miss this Highland tale!

OK maybe I am hard to please. After reading this book and seeing all the 4 and 5 star reviews, I have come to that conclusion.
I have read Ms. Amy Jarecki before. It would appear that my feelings about her books are consistent: the writing is fine, the story, not so much.
This book has the Glencoe Massacre as the backdrop. Hugh MacIain, the heir to the Glencoe clan, was saved by Charlotte Hill, the daughter of an English governor. After Hugh and Charlotte met each other, they pretty much were "in love", in the sense that both pined for each other after Hugh escaped from the English garrison at Fort William even though their entire encounter constituted a few moments of chest-wiping and short conversations. They saw each other again 9 months later when Hugh's father reluctantly answered William the Orange's call to swear loyalty. The relationship developed quickly and was rather rushed. I would totally call it insta-love. They went from "I am thinking of you" to "I love you with my whole heart" in a blink of an eye after they were reunited. Maybe I am not exactly a romantic but how can you know if you love someone if you have never really talked to each other?
In the beginning I read on with enthusiasm. The writing is not bad at all and having been to Glencoe and Fort William myself and read a few books on the massacre, it was interesting to read a romance story set in that period. Hugh and Charlotte were separated because Hugh had to return to his clan. But the massacre happened, Hugh lost his father and gained the responsibility of being the laird. His responsibility no longer allowed him to pursue Charlotte and somehow the relationship become impossible. I mean the story has its moments. But somehow I lost interests somewhere in the middle and started skimming. It is just.....the "conflict" for Charlotte and Hugh was rather anti-climatic. There was no pull between Charlotte and Hugh. Both were so ready to profess love but somehow Hugh thought he had to sacrifice his relationship with Charlotte to save his clan. The reasoning is not ungrounded, but the interactions were not authentic enough for me.
Hugh was not your typical highlander. I was rather disappointed because he was all lovey-dovey and oh I cannot live without you lass. (Do you see my eyes rolling?) And Charlotte the English rose behaved rather scandalously with Hugh. I mean......come on, really, she is supposed to be a kind, demure, tender-hearted English lady who knew little of passion. But a few kisses with Hugh, she became very forward. Honestly, the characters could be whatever they want to be, but the story has to support the changes in these characters. If you want the lass to a sex-hungry vixen as the heroine, why make her a shy virgin to begin with? Or rather, if you want the lass to go from a shy virgin to said vixen, you gotta show us the way. Not just a few kisses and one orgasm and all of a sudden she became someone else. It just does not make sense.
I regret to say that this book was not great. It was "OK", perfect for Goodreads 2 stars.

Historical facts are woven into the romance of a Highlander and an Englishwoman in this first book in the Highland Defender Series. Charlotte meets Hugh when he is brought into Fort William’s infirmary after spending nearly two years in horrible dungeon conditions. There is instant attraction in spite of Hugh’s illness and the fact that they are on opposite sides of a war. Hugh escapes, recovers his health and then makes an effort to woo Charlotte in spite of their differences. Many issues related to having an occupying force in one’s country, overbearing dragoons to contend with, and evil men out to do harm were presented and dealt with. Hugh and Charlotte did not have an easy uneventful courtship and there were times I wondered if they would get their happily ever after AND if it would actually be happy if they did end up together forever.
After reading this book I needed to look up Glencoe, Jacobites, Williamites, Sassenach and a few other terms. I had heard them before but since European history is not something I have studied recently there was a need to know more. After doing some research I even more appreciated the fact that Ms Jarecki stuck so closely to the facts of history while writing this book.
The story was well written, the characters were well fleshed out and the emotions elicited strong. I did not like the British…not even Charlotte’s father. I have never liked the idea of occupation and bending others to the will of the occupiers. I did like this story and rated it accordingly.

As you can probably tale, I absolutely loved "The Fearless Highlander". I definitely look forward to the next installment. Loved that this one was based on historical characters and covered a historical event in Scottish history. The romance is moving and had me weeping a few tears. The battle scenes were so real, I experienced true horror at the descriptive writing, but in a heart pounding, pulse racing way. I'm so glad I found this excellent book. Happy reading!

I am not an historical romance fan and I went into The Fearless Highlander with low expectations but I was very surprised.
The story starts straight in the middle of an on going political Highland war. Hugh has been a prisoner for nearly two years and he never gave away his true identity, even to Charlotte who steps in to help care to his wounds even for a minimal time before she helps him escape. As time goes on with no sign of Hugh again since she managed to help him to freedom Charlotte starts to court others even when she can't get the broody prisoner out of her mind.
Charlotte is a strong willed character and even as a lady of wealth she doesn't shy away from the dirt and grime that gets thrown her way. Hugh is the typical broody and moody Highlander but it suits the dynamic between Charlotte and Hugh. Hugh is the rough to Charlotte's soft.
There is a lot of tactic talk which did add a lull to the story as I started to loose interest but the slow burn and forbidden touches had me hooked.

The Fearless Highlander by Amy Jarecki is a beautifully written and very engaging story! I could not put this book down, it completely captured my attention. The author did her research. The amount of history that is in this book is fascinating. After reading this book, I went and read up on the Glencoe Massacre because I had not heard of it before. There is so much emotion in this book and I felt it all. The characters were phenomenal! I fell in love with so many of them! The hero and heroine were amazing and I loved reading about them. Absolutely phenomenal read.

The Fearless Highlander by Amy Jarecki is a fabulous Highlander romance. Ms. Jarecki has gifted readers with a well-written book furnished with a phenomenal cast of characters. Charlotte hates the way her father's men treat the Scottish prisoners and tries to help them when she can. Hugh is one of those prisoners. Hugh and Charlotte's tale is packed with drama, humor, action, spice and suspense. I loved every page of The Fearless Highlander and look forward to reading more from Amy Jarecki in the future. The Fearless Highlander is book 1 in the Highland Defender Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete story, not a cliff-hanger.

This book follows two characters through a frustrating story line to say the least. The hero "Hugh" and heroine "Charlotte" see little of each other throughout the book yet their love is strong and pure.
This story is placed in the beginning of the Scottish rebellion placing Charlotte an English commanders daughter and Hugh a Jacobite on opposite sides of the playing field.
***General story line spoilers below***
Charlotte discovers Hugh on his death bed in the surgery after spending two years in the bowels of Fort Williams dungeons after being captured by the English during battle. Despite Hugh's sorry state as well as being titled a murderer Charlotte is determined to help Hugh survive. Providing him with secret extra care as well as assisting him to freedom directly our from under her father "The colonial's" nose. From the beginning pages of the book Charlotte is portrayed as a meek, shy, and sheltered young woman. However she quickly grows into a determined, strong, and intelligent heroine whom is willing to defy her father and risk her very life for Hugh.
Hugh escapes too home barely hanging onto life and spends several months recovering each day thinking of the blue eyed lass that saved his very life. When a proclamation demanding the clan swear fealty to the English king or risk being destroyed reaches Hugh's clan weeks late in a blizzard Hugh and his father have no choice but to depart traveling through a blizzard to try and swear fealty before the provided deadline. This leads Hugh back to the place that put him through hell for two years of his life (Fort Williams), as well as back in the arms of Charlotte. This chance meeting solidifies the feelings of both Hugh and Charlotte leading them on the path of "Forbidden" love.
Hugh travels back to England to court Charlotte in secret determined to earn her fathers approval for his hand in marriage despite Hugh hailing from one of the largest most notorious highland clans. This story is placed in the beginning of the Scottish rebellion placing Charlotte an English commanders daughter and Hugh a Jacobite on opposite sides of the playing field.

Charlotte discovers Hugh on his death bed in the surgery after spending two years in the bowels of Fort Williams dungeons after being captured by the English during battle. Despite Hugh's sorry state as well as being titled a murderer Charlotte is determined to help Hugh survive. Providing him with secret extra care as well as assisting him to freedom directly our from under her father "The colonial's" nose. From the beginning pages of the book Charlotte is portrayed as a meek, shy, and sheltered young woman. However she quickly grows into a determined, strong, and intelligent heroine whom is willing to defy her father and risk her very life for Hugh.
Hugh escapes too home barely hanging onto life and spends several months recovering each day thinking of the blue eyed lass that saved his very life. When a proclamation demanding the clan swear fealty to the English king or risk being destroyed reaches Hugh's clan weeks late in a blizzard Hugh and his father have no choice but to depart traveling through a blizzard to try and swear fealty before the provided deadline. This leads Hugh back to the place that put him through hell for two years of his life (Fort Williams), as well as back in the arms of Charlotte. This chance meeting solidifies the feelings of both Hugh and Charlotte leading them on the path of "Forbidden" love.
Hugh travels back to England to court Charlotte in secret determined to earn her fathers approval for his hand in marriage despite Hugh hailing from one of the largest most notorious highland clans. A very Scottish vs. English love story. Hugh and Charlotte have many challenges ahead of them if they want to marry, not least of which is that they are on opposite sides, politically. A very well written and comprehensive story with the love story connecting everything together. Excellent atmosphere and emotional engagement.

The Fearless Highlander is the first book in Amy Jarecki's latest series – Highland Defenders. I think I have read all of this author's work and can categorically say that this is by far her very best book.
The story is about Charlotte Hill, the daughter of a government colonel who is the governor of Fort William. She often helps out in the infirmary at the Fort, looking after both the soldiers, and it's prisoners.
One of the prisoners she helps is Hugh MacIain. He is a warrior loyal to the Jacobite cause and the Heir to the most notorious clan in the Highlands. He has been hiding his identity while imprisoned in the bowels of Fort William’s 'hell pit'. If they knew who he was they wouldn't think twice about killing him rather than just leaving him to rot in the 'pit'. Instead, they think of him as just another Jacobite. He is taken to the infirmary because he is seriously ill with the 'flux'. He can't believe that after surviving the 'pit' for nearly two years, existing on only slop for food, and left in dark dreadful conditions, that now he might meet his maker by way of the dreaded flux.
Charlotte hasn't seen such a well made man, he is very tall, with an amazing build, despite having been held captive for so long. The doctor, a man who has designs on Charlotte himself, is a rotten man, and he hopes that Hugh will die overnight. After all, he's just another Jacobite that the world will be better off without. Charlotte is incensed and does all that she can to help Hugh recover. During that time they are both attracted to each other. Hugh asks her to help him escape, but she can't. Luckily he does find a way out, and in the end Charlotte ends up helping him not to get caught. They share a quick passionate kiss before he heads back to his clan, and Hugh is determined that one way or another he will see her again.
So that is where the wonderful romance starts, and throughout the rest of the story you see them meet again and watch how they try to beat the odds to be together. The romantic side of the story is so emotional, and very very passionate. But what makes this book even more special is that much of it is based on facts, the war between the Jacobites and Williamites. The telling of the terrible things that were done to the Jacobites, in this case, Hugh's clan, were heartbreaking. As just a made up story it would have been an emotional read, but knowing that it really happened really does make you cry. Well it certainly made this reader cry. Not only did I read a fabulous love story, but happily I learned a bit of history.
The book captivated me from the very first page and I couldn't read fast enough to find out what happened next. I tried to read it all in one go, but by 5 in the morning I just had to put the book down to get some sleep. I picked it straight back up the next day though and finished it. If a book is one that pulls me in that much that I don't want to stop reading it, then I know it's going to be an amazing book. One which I will wholeheartedly recommend.

Although this is a fictitious historical novel it shows recollections of the time during the reign of William of Orange when the English occupied Fort William, leading up to the Glencoe massacre in 1692. It's a well deserved 5 stars rating for the way the fictitious elements are blended into the historical aspects of this story.
Hugh is a strapping young Highlander, the Heir to the MacIain clan. He is emprisoned in Fort William where the conditions are beyond poor. The treatment of the prisoners is abysmal. Hugh is admitted to the surgery in a weak and feverish condition. The doctor doesn't have much empathy for the Highlander and hardly administers any treatment.
Charlotte is the daughter of Colonel Hill who is leading the regiment in Fort William. She volunteers to work in the surgery and is appalled by the doctor's attitude and the lack of treatment.
Charlotte is quite taken with Hugh even in the sorry state in which he is admitted. Hugh is impressed and touched by her compassion. She goes against the doctor's order and tends to Hugh by herself. This only reinforces the attraction between them. Hugh finds a way to free himself but escaping proves to be difficult. Charlotte risks her reputation and the wrath of her father to help him.
This story is full of twists and turns. Just when everything appears to be going in the right direction, something else goes wrong. Despite Colonel Hill's objections, the attack on Glencoe is now imminent. Can Charlotte get a warning to the MacIain clan on time?
The red coats outnumber the clan and to make matters worse, the weather is not favourable. The Highlanders are treated like savages through ignorance from the troops and greed from rival clans. There is a lot of blood shed. Homelessness and starvation follow. There are some heartbreaking moments. Hugh is divided between his duties for his clan and his love for Charlotte. Besides, there is little or no chances of the two of them having a future together! Can they overcome all the obstacles and find a way to be together?
I found Hugh to be loyal, loving and dedicated even when his priorities clash. Charlotte is strong, compassionate and determined. I was fully captivated by the whole story and fully recommend to other readers.

Originally reviewed at My Devastating Reads. I recently won an audiobook from the author on Twitter, and I've just finished listening to this awesome historical romance. Those of you who follow the blog know that I adore historical romance and winning a highlander novel just tickled me pink, so of course I bumped it up to the tops of my listens.
I have to mention how well narrated this book was. I loved how Joel Froomkin was able to bring to life the characters so vividly. Colonel Hill sounded rather stuffy, Hugh sounded hot and Charlotte sounded rather quaint. What's interesting is that while she might have been a bit shy and sheltered, she is an admirable character with a backbone and opinions of her own. She's not about to let anyone mold her life and does set out to make her life her own. And Hugh is her choice in a husband.
The novel is sprinkled with a fair amount of adventure and romance and the pace keeps you moving you right along. The author has woven her tale around real historical events but I wasn't bored for a minute and enjoyed the plot a lot. I wasn't expecting the massacre of Hugh's family, but discovered, thanks to the author's notes, that this was a real historical event, and it's one that shapes the story and romance. I admired Hugh for his bravery and adored him for the depth of emotion that he felt for Charlotte. Parts of this novel were hawt and that's because Hugh is so devoted to Charlotte. Hat off to Amy Jarecki for penning such a passionate and strong hero, and for not making an ass in some way. Sometimes strong heroes come off that way for even part of the novel and Hugh is definitely one hero who never struck me in that light, making this novel that much more enjoyable. I love to be in love with the hero.
If you're in the mood for a great historical romance, or a sexy highlander or a story that is well told and written with polish, then The Fearless Highlander will fit the bill. Entertaining and romantic, this was truly great reading.

First book in a new series from Amy Jarecki the Fearless Highland (Highland Defender Book 1). The book captivated me from the very first page. Charlotte Hill is the daughter of an English government colonel who is the governor of Fort William trying to keep the Scottish under control. Charlotte often helps out in the infirmary at the Fort tending to both soldiers, and its prisoners. This is where she meet our hero Hugh M MacIain. Hugh has been imprisoned in the bowels of Fort William’s 'hell pit' for 18 months when he becomes serious ill ill from the “flux” he is taken to the infirmary. Everyone thinks he is just another dirty Jacobite when in reality he is the sole heir to one of the most notorious clan in the Highlands. If his identity was known they would not think twice about killing him, but a least live he has a chance of survival and escape to get back to his Clan. He wakes up to an angel, Charlotte who has been helping him, he does not trust and her gives a false name. The two are instantly attracted to each other and Charlotte eventually aides in his escape from the prison and the Fort William. After his escape Hugh realizes he is taken with her, he can’t stop thinking about Charlotte and wants to see her again. The land is in turmoil, Scottish turmoil, they are fighting to put the "real" Scottish King on the Scottish throne and whisk their freedom from English control. He is loyal Scottish highland defender to the Jacobite cause and she the daughter of a government English colonel. This an emotional and passionate love story with the two struggling to be together, to beat the odds against them. Charlotte and Hugh have a huge battle ahead of them to overcome several obstacles to find their HEA.

Amy Jarecki is a master at weaving entertaining, romantic Scottish historical romances. The Fearless Highlander is certainly no exception. Her writing style always flows seamlessly across the pages and keeps this NetGalley review completely engaged. She’s definitely one of my top favorite authors in this genre.

My only complaint is around 65% into this romantic storyline the main couple begins to take a backseat to the historical aspects/drama. The brutal assault that occurs is horrific, heartless, and pretty much results in the annihilation of several sub-characters. Though they were barely mentioned, I would have preferred the whole attack been averted so these people could have appeared in future books. It interjected such a dark cloud of despair I found it quite unsettling. Admittedly, I am a “puppies and rainbows” kind of person so always prefer HEA’s for everyone, except for the villians, of course. I would love to Monday Night quarterback and tell you exactly how I would have handled it, but that would risk too many major spoilers.
So, my fellow Scottish romance book-loving friends, if this is your genre, you definitely should check out this book and others written by the talented Amy Jarecki.

This story has everything I love about a highland romance.
A strong and fearless highlander, a strong woman who won't take no for an answer and is strong in her convictions and lots of danger and perlious times.
Hugh, out brawny fearless highlander meets Charlotte in prison. He is a captive and she is the daughter of the Colonel Hill, the man of power. With all the upheaval with Scotland and resistance rising everywhere he makes his sneaky escape with help from an unexpected source.
Charlotte is resigned to her life in Scotland. She misses London but after meeting her highlander she can't get him out of her head. When she finds out who he truly is and that they can never have a future together she fights even harder for her happiness.
With danger all around them, clandestine meetings and secret words are all they can afford until tragedy strikes. Will these two ever be able to overcome the unimaginable trials against them and find true happiness in love? Or will war and hate drive them apart and keep them there?
Amy just keeps getting better and better in my opinion. I absolutely loved this story.

Once again the dreaded Fort William (representing English opression and butchery) is the backdrop against which the initial action of this story plays out. (Yes, the same Fort William that has been the backdrop for a number of highland romances set in the these times).
It's 1692. Charlotte Hill, the daughter of the fort's colonel, and the rugged clan heir, Hugh MacIain meet in the fort's infirmary. He as a patient and she as a nursing assistant. Their story is set against the ongoing English invasion of Scotland and in particular the massacre of Glen Coe.
Imprisonment, attraction, escape, massacre, love, vengeance, clan loyalties and feuds, and political subterfuge all have a part to play.
Charlotte is a woman of great fortitude, not the weakling sassenach that most think her. A staunch Jacobite, Hugh finds himself torn between his love and his cause. Enemies by birth, compellingly attracted to each other, these two must forge something new. Can they?

I loved Amy Jarecki's latest Highland romance. It was an exciting thrill ride through the Jacobean era in Scotland with lots of action, peril, tragedy and passion. Her characters were strong and appealing and the plot captivated me from the first page. The passion between the hero and heroine is hot and steamy. If you love Scottish romance, you will love this book! Can't wait for the next one.

AN UNFORGETABLE AGELESS HIGHLAND ROMANCE
If it were possible I would give this book 20 or more stars.
There are very rare and few times a person is lucky enough to come across a book that will stay with them throughout all time, to be read over and over, each time being like the first. Authors and books such as Kathleen Woodiwiss’ The Flame and the Flower or Wolf and the Dove, Penelope Williamson’s Keeper of the Dream, Judith McNaught’s A Kingdom of Dreams or Whitney, My Love, Johanna Lindsey’s Fires of Winter and Hearts Aflame, Julie Garwood’s Lairds’ Fiancée and Highland Laird’s series, or Jude Deveraux’s Velvet Montgomery series. Amy Jarecki has given us such a book with The Fearless Highlander. This is ultimately one of the best romantic love stories I have ever read, one you can think and dream about forever.
Rich with emotion these well-developed characters pull the reader into their world, making them cry when they cry and laugh when they laugh. Becoming better and better with each turn of the page this amazing tale allows you to almost feel the faraway land where the story unfolds in such a way they may close their eyes and go back in time to this historical era, become part of the setting, and feel the gripping tale unfold.
Amy Jarecki, earning a permanent place as one of my favored treasure, grabs the reader from the first page and holds them there until the last paragraph is read. Excellently written, I very highly recommend this book and author to anyone who loves reading historical romance.
Hugh McClain, a fierce warrior, is captured and imprisoned in the bowels of Fort William’s hell. He endures horror after horror that should see him dead, yet even the bloody flux can’t hold him. Not only being a fierce warrior, he must hide his identity, being the heir to the most notorious clan in the Highlands, with thoughts of revenge ever present in his thoughts.
Charlotte Hill, daughter of a government colonel helps the doctor in the fort’s surgery. One pained look from the prisoner sprawled atop a cot seizes her heart. She recognizes he is no simple common captive.
Hugh manages, with help, to escape and wants to woo the beautiful lass who helped him in the surgery. All the reader should do is open to page one and become completely engrossed. The audiobook is great and captures attention throughout. I highly recommend this book and series along with any other series written by Amy Jarecki.

There are very rare and few times a person is lucky enough to come across a book that will stay with them throughout all time, to be read over and over, each time being like the first. Authors and books such as Kathleen Woodiwiss’ The Flame and the Flower or Wolf and the Dove, Penelope Williamson’s Keeper of the Dream, Judith McNaught’s A Kingdom of Dreams or Whitney, My Love, Johanna Lindsey’s Fires of Winter and Hearts Aflame, Julie Garwood’s Lairds’ Fiancée and Highland Laird’s series, or Jude Deveraux’s Velvet Montgomery series. Amy Jarecki has given us such a book with The Fearless Highlander. This is ultimately one of the best romantic love stories I have ever read, one you can think and dream about forever.
Rich with emotion these well-developed characters pull the reader into their world, making them cry when they cry and laugh when they laugh. Becoming better and better with each turn of the page this amazing tale allows you to almost feel the faraway land where the story unfolds in such a way they may close their eyes and go back in time to this historical era, become part of the setting, and feel the gripping tale unfold.
Amy Jarecki, earning a permanent place as one of my favored treasure, grabs the reader from the first page and holds them there until the last paragraph is read. Excellently written, I very highly recommend this book and author to anyone who loves reading historical romance.

The Fearless Highlander, of the Highland Defender series by Amy Jarecki is a prequel to The Highland Duke and The Highland Commander. This book is set in the days leading up to the time when Scots had finally had enough of English atrocities. The massacre at Glencoe on February 13, 1692, where almost an entire clan was wiped out, was the last straw. As a result, the clans began meeting secretly under the guise of quarterly highland games. At the games, clan members competed to increase their strength and stamina for warfare. During these games the clan leaders met secretly to plan their strategy of revenge.
The results of the hatred and prejudices between the Scots and the English, and of the slaughter of Scots by the English is a lesson humanity has yet to learn. Through the thoughts and voice of the lifelike characters, Jarecki says it best: "Hate was ugly. Hate played irrational tricks on his [Hugh's] mind, and if he let her, hate would eat him alive." Second in command to Charlotte's father was Lieutenant Colonel Hamilton, an English supremacist who wanted nothing less than to wipe all Scottish "savages" from the face of the earth. Sound familiar? In reality, these "savages" lived by a code of honor, hospitality, and respect that the English simply did not understand.
In 1691, the truly fearless Hugh MacIain MacDonald, of Clan McIain, was imprisoned in the dreaded Fort William on trumped up charges. In the prison infirmary, he was shackled to a table and left to die of "the bloody flux". This is the love story of Hugh and Charlotte Hill, an English gentlewoman, and daughter of the governor of Fort William's daughter set against the tumultuous times. Charlotte is a fictitious character. Hugh likely represents John, the real-life son of the murdered clan chief, Alasdair Ruadh MacIain MacDonald, 12th chieftain of Glencoe.

I have a weakness for a good historical romance. The Fearless Highlander by Amy Jarecki has been sitting on my shelf since the 2017 InD’Scribe Con. I hate that I have waited so long to read it. The Fearless Highlander is the first book in the Highland Defender Series. This book starts off in the year 1691 in the dark depths of Fort William’s prison. Hugh MacIain is suffering from the bloody flux but when the Colonel’s daughter, Charlotte Hill, tends to him, he has the strength and will to break free. He finds a way out with the help of Charlotte and vows to never forget her. When Jacobite cause rises, Hugh’s clan is in danger and this danger leads him back to Charlotte once again. Even though they begin to fall for each other, politics and war will threaten to separate them forever.
This book kept me enthralled from beginning to end! Amy Jarecki does a marvelous job at describing the history of the time of the Jacobite rebellion. There is incredible detail that really made me feel as if I was in the story. The research that went into this must have been daunting because there is the historical detail but also the political and social issues of the time. However, the author flawlessly created a beautiful story that is well researched.
I love the characters. Charlotte and Hugh make quite the unstoppable pair. Hugh is complex as he has the survival of his clan to think about but he cannot deny the love he has for Charlotte. I love Charlotte’s conviction. Even defying her father, she knows what is right and nothing holds her back from doing the right thing. Overall, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I really recommend this story for those who love Scottish history and romance.
