Okay, I know what you’re thinking. Tui? What kind of name is that? Is it short for something?
Nope. Among the many great things to come out of New Zealand (the Lord of the Rings movies, cats that paint, my mom) is a bird called the tui—not as well known as the kiwi, but a heck of a lot noisier!
I was born July 31 (same birthday as Harry Potter!) in Caracas, Venezuela, and lived in Asuncion, Paraguay; Miami, Florida; and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, before moving to New Jersey in high school, where I started doing theatre—mostly backstage work, because (a) it was fun, and (b) you got to hang out in the dark with cute boys. (Er, I mean . . . because it was artistically fulfilling, yes.)
I graduated from Williams College in ’98 and I currently live in Boston with my husband, my perfect new baby, and my adorable yoodle Sunshine (what’s a yoodle? A puppy that’s three-quarters poodle and one-quarter Yorkshire terrier, of course!).
Much to my parents’ relief, I abandoned my theatrical aspirations after college for the far more stable and lucrative career of fiction writing.
My first two official books were beginning readers, part of Grosset & Dunlap’s “First Friends” series for kids learning to read. MEET MO AND ELLA is tough to find now, but FUN WITH MO AND ELLA should still be out there somewhere.
My first novel for teenagers was THIS MUST BE LOVE, which retells Shakespeare’s play A Midsummer Night’s Dream in a modern-day high school, from the POV of the two heroines, Hermia and Helena.
And now I'm writing in a new project called SEEKERS! It's a children's book series that I'm writing with Erin Hunter. Check out my blog to find out more!
My 7 year old son loves the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise though he is yet to see any of the movies (because I'm not up for the challenge of sitting through an entire movie reading aloud the subtitles). This book was for him the next best thing so we dug in. However, about halfway in we decided to quit because the book is just plain awful.
The story appears to be more of a beat by beat description of what is shown in the screen rather than an actually story. No depth whatsoever. For the adult the story is completely uninteresting and for the child it is just plain confusing with a multitude of names and no faces, feelings or characteristica to prescribe to them. My son kept asking me the same question over and over again: "Who is he?" And as the story progressed I found myself more and more often replying "Good question, I don't remember". It was that disengaging...
A decent re-telling of the first two-thirds of movie that IIRC, actually helped clarify the twisty-turny plot. However, the book ended before the climactic scenes of the film - no reveal of Calypso? Really?
As happy as I am that it comes with movie pictures, this story doesn’t even come close to the end of the movie. It just stops somewhere right after Calypso is freed. Seriously? I always hate it when this happens. A movie novel should be about the whole movie; not just part of it.
I love the movie it is one of my favourites but the book is not worth your time. It is exactly like the movie. There is nothing new or more interesting.
Yo Ho more Pirate fun for me. Overall it seemed as though there was more humor in this third book, specifically with Pintel, Ragetti, and Captain Jack. I have not watched the movie in a long while so I can’t remember if some or all of these scenes were in it.
I liked Captain Jack Sparrow’s crew wearing coconut helmets in the water to float by the unsuspecting East India Trading Company. So silly.
One of my favorite scenes was when they were trying to find Captain Jack in Davy Jones Locker. After all the pirates were screaming in fear for their lives while falling over a huge waterfall Ragetti was grinning. Pintel asked him “what has got into you?” Ragetti said “I thought it was fun.” Pintel answered “It wasn’t fun!” Then he “scowled at Ragetti’s beaming face, and then, relenting, he added, ‘Maybe a little, the titlting-over part—’ ” Ragetti then blurted out “And the big splash at the end!” I love them together, like two big kids at a water park.
It was hilarious with Jack and Barbossa fighting over being Captain, yelling orders over each other and everything. So Juvenile. They were relieved having escaped from the world of the dead and then they ALL drew weapons on each other. I laughed out loud the moment they were discussing their heading. Barbossa: “The Brethren Court is a-gathering at Shipwreck Cove. Jack, you and I be going there, and there’s no arguing the point.” Jack: “I is arguing the point. If there’s pirates a-gathering, I’m a-pointing my ship the other a-away.”
Another Jack moment—he wanted to get over onto the Pearl so “Jack had wrapped a rope around the cannon wheel, a burning fuse lighter in his hand.” Beckett: “You’re mad!” Jack: “Thank goodness for that. Or else this would never work.” Then he lit the cannon. Love the madness.
My disappointment came when it built up to a final battle sequence and ended abruptly before the fight. What!?
This is the third book in the series just like the movie At World’s End is the third movie in the series and it didn’t disappoint. Like the other two books there are pictures from the movies and great descriptions of the places and characters so I would have been able to read the books without seeing the movies first. I loved reading the scene between Captain Teague and Captain Jack and the way it was written out made you see more of a strained relationship between father and son. I think any fan of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies will find these books entertaining and they're written well enough that you can read them without seeing the movie first.

It was my best experience in Singapore. 5 Last week, I read Pirates of the Caribbean. That was former story. I want to read next story, so I choose this one. I felt it has the difference between movie and book. It is very interesting. I think it has different between English book and Japanese Book.
This book was about saving Captain Jack Sparrow and saving pirates all over the seven seas from the East Indian Trading Company and Davy Jones.I gave the book five stars because I kept reading. I didn't want to put the book down because I was never bored or confused about what was happening.I would recommend this book because it was of the best books I have ever read. I would recommend this book for people who like action and mysteries.
This book follows the Pirates of the Caribbean At World's End movie pretty well.
I wasn't a fan of the way that it was written. The pacing was weird for me but I had to keep in mind that this was a junior novel so it was written for a younger audience.
I still enjoyed jumping back in with Captain Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, Elizabeth Swann and the rest of the gang as they follow Jack on another crazy journey.
I realy like this book, because it has very good and interesting topic. But I don't like that moment, when Norington dead, because Bootstrap kill him. My favourite person in this book is pirate Jeck Sparrow. I like him, because he is funny, smart and he never sad. I hate Lord Beckett, he is so cruel. I think this book is the best book in all collection.
Good avdenture book. great for picturing it . in a sense that ts a advenutre book. it also has a actiony , fictoin , way in it. i enjoyed this book very much. And some of the pictures in it. Have a sort of alur to them
the movie and book were so much alike, because the book was written after the movie dawned. So i guess it's save to say the movie was far more entertaining and better.
