Rate this book
From #1 Amazon bestselling author Ethan Jones comes Codename: Makarov, the second novel in the Carrie Chronicles spy thriller series.

Carrie O’Connor, the CIS fiercest field operative, is in Pakistan for an extremely secretive meeting with one of the local Taliban leaders. But she falls into an ambush that almost claims her life, and she begins to suspect a mole inside her team is betraying their covert operations.

As she starts her search for the traitor, Carrie is informed about a ruthless ex-KGB assassin, who may have been implicated in her father’s disappearance in Moscow at the height of the Cold War. Carrie dives into this inquiry, and soon finds herself at the center of a decade-long intrigue. Trying to balance her feelings and rein in her emotions, she learns about her ex-partner, Justin Hall, who has gone rogue and is hiding among the lawless terrorist-infested badlands of Syria and Iraq.

Carrie is determined to dispel the cloud of uncertainty looming over her father’s disappearance and eager to bring Justin, the former love of her life, back home. She embarks into what may turn out to be her most dangerous and heart-wrenching operation. Her deadly quest for justice will take her from the blood-soaked Syrian deserts back to Pakistan to settle the accounts once for all with the man who killed her father, and the traitor who backstabbed her and her team.

Codename: Makarov is Ethan Jones’s most explosive novel yet. It is the perfect spy thriller, barreling along with the neck-breaking speed of Brad Thor and the jam-packed action of David Baldacci. Fans of Tom Clancy, Daniel Silva or Lee Child will love this pulse-pounding espionage adventure spanning the globe.

Absolutely fantastic! If there was a 10 starI would give it. Unfortunately, I can only give five stars. Job well done, Ethan Jones.

Codename Makarov - a review by Rosemary Kenny

Female super-spy, Canadian Intelligence Service (CIS) agent supreme, Carrie O'Connor is smart, sassy - and ice-cold when on a mission.

Under cover in global terrorist-ridden territories, she homes in like a heat-seeking missile on wrongdoers and will stop at nothing - including using tactical support from unexpected sources - to satisfy justice and bring those who murdered her father in KGB-ruled Russia, to her own kind of justice.

While under orders to bring in her ex-lover and confirmed 'rogue' agent Justin Hall, Carrie must decide whether it is safe &/or practical to let her heart rule her head, by giving the supposed CIS traitor a chance to be re-evaluated and explain himself to her...or to turn him in as ordered, to face possible elimination, if she demurs to obey and do what's expected from her y her superiors.

What will Carrie decide to do? What will happen as a result?
Is an 'HEA' possible for all concerned?

Ethnic Jones is definitely the Master of the Secret Agent Thriller, with his burgeoning pantheon of CIS Agents, Justin Hall, Javid Pierce and now, the latest illustrious addition to the dynamic of the world of international espionage, Carrie O'Connor, who ramps up the tension and excitement exponentially, in Codename Makarov, Book 2 in the Carrie Chronicles, by the amazing Ethan Jones.

Why not get Book 1, Priority Target, at the same time, to double your reading pleasure? Both are well-worthy of 5-star ratings and a place on your spy-thriller bookshelf!

This is the 2nd book in the series that I have read. As in the previous book, Carrie is working on an assignment, but there always seems to be a roadblock to concluding it successfully. In the 1st part of the story, Carrie is waiting to meet with Kahn, a Taliban leader. While the meeting is taking place, an attack occurs.

After returning to Canada, she is given a mission to assist the Russians in Syria. Again this does not go as easily as it was planned. After this mission, she has another task which will hopefully fill in the missing pieces. She has to travel to Karachi to try and make it happen.

The action that happens in each assignment is immense. The reason or the hikcups in accomplishing each mission will be identified once you start reading the book, you won't be disappointed. As an additional incentive, Justin Hall makes an appearance here as well. To find out what his role is, this again you must read this book.

Codename: Makarov starts out with the history of Carrie O'Connor's father and his final mission in Russia. It involved the death of a Russian defector and her father's eventual death, which was mentioned in Priority Target, Book #1 of the series.

Later on, Carrie receives a call from Elliot, one of her friends who works with MI-6, British Intelligence. He tells her that the name of the man who killed the defector and who was possibly involved with her missing father: Romanov. He was a Russian oil billionaire whose codename was Makarov. The weapon used to kill the defector? Yes, a Makarov pistol.

Follow Carrie as she completes her present mission in Pakistan, as well as her attempt to find her CIS partner, Justin Hall, who seems to have gone rogue. Add to that is her personal mission to find Makarov and determine if he was responsible for killing her father.

You won't be disappointed with Ethan Jones latest novel.

Ethan Jones' Justin Hall series introduced Carrie O’Connor but this book is the second in her own series.  Since learning where her father was buried Carrie is determined to discover how he died. Carrie has a lot to deal with during this book as she juggles this personal ‘mission’ with her official one aiding the Russians in rescuing some captured operatives.  Then there’s the issue of her long term CIS partner Justin having ‘gone rogue’ & how she can help bring him back & keep him out of prison.  If that weren’t enough she makes a trip home to visit her mother who is suffering with Alzhiemers.  I liked seeing this more human side of the character as it helped bring her to life.  How Ethan Jones manages to get all this into such a fast paced novel is amazing.  Doubly so when you add in his trademark awesome action scenes too.  A great read for fans of action spy thrillers & a great addition to Ethan Jones back catalogue proving, if proof is needed, that he doesn’t write bad novels.

DRM-free Epub 2 on Kobo, ISBN 1230000860574; 268 pages, including three chapters from book 3.

A familiar background, set mainly in war-torn Afghanistan (Taliban, ISIS... ) and Carrie O'Connor is in the thick of it. As well as attempting to liaise with a local warlord, dealing with potential moles in her organisation she has two more personal missions: finding Justin Hall and persuading him to return to the fold and identifying who killed her father towards the end of the Cold War...

This can be read as a stand-alone but there are links to other books by this author that will add something to the enjoyment, if this is your bag... If warnings are needed: violence, wounding, death - the mayhem to be expected in war/spy/thrillers. Te viewpoint, from a Canadian perspective adds a twist to the books.

Finding out the answers when there are so many hidden agendas is never easy but Carrie O'Connor is not one to wait around for something to happen. She is always right in the midst of the action. I like her strong character as a CIS agent but I also like seeing as more than just a agent. She is a woman who wants to do want is right for her family and her country. Unfortunately her family usually gets little from her and she feels the loneliness and disappointment in herself as a sister and a daughter. Sometimes she wishes she wasn't alone without a life partner but she is doing all she can for Canada. She is a real life hero in fiction with imperfections but that doesn't stop her from going after terrorist that are after targets she has sworn to protect.

Code name: Makarov is a fast paced, action packed spy thriller that had me roped in from the first page with an excellent storyline, strong characters and unexpected twists.

Enjoyed that Carrie was finally able to put closure to a personal matter along with completing her mission and shot two birds with one stone. I was glad to read that Justin finally reaches out to Carrie but makes no promises and definitely looking forward to what happens next.

Mr Jones continues to keep me on the edge of my seat with another great book.

I enjoyed this book immensely and looking forward to the next Carrie O'Conner book.

Another must read

Carrie Can Kick Some Serious Ass!

As an operative for the Canadian Intelligence Service, Carrie has seen more than her share of ambushes, enemy and friendly forces injured, maimed or killed and destruction. But this book starts as Carrie is trying to discover what happened to her father, a CIS agent during the Cold War, in Russia. Back to the present, Carrie discovers the name of the KGB agent who killed her father. This, of course, is just another day in her harrowing life. She's not afraid to do her job, no matter how messy or death-dealing it becomes. A truly riveting and fast-paced story. You'll be tempted to keep reading even though you really ought to be in bed.

Carrie O'Conner gets another book! Perhaps even better than her appearances with her sometimes partner, Justin Sloan. Codename Makarov is, in every sense of the word , a thriller set in the Middle East. With each book he writes Ethan Jones continues to polish his craft, with this spin-off book being better written & more satisfying than his Justin Sloan books. Priority Target steadily builds to a climax and this time its personal. A very good read I look forward to Carrie's next solo novel.

This installment of the Carrie Chronicles continues the action-packed pace of the previous book. Ethan Jones drops the reader in the middle of a CIA extraction of an asset from the USSR toward the end of the Cold War. And of course, nothing goes as planned, with deadly consequences.
Then the action shifts to Carrie on an op in Afghanistan, where she and her team are betrayed not once, but twice.
This novel provides some backstory on Carrie, as well as further developing her relationship w/ members of her family. These factors definitely are periphery, as the author spends most of the narrative setting up and executing the action sequences. He does well, keeping the reader engaged in the plot. There are few “dull moments” in this book. Also remarkable is how clean Jones keeps the book: no profanity or vulgarity that I recall and no sex scenes. Just action sequences linked by enough transition detail to set up the next action scene.
I’m a fan of this series and will continue to read it. The characters are beginning to develop and gain depth. Jones knows his weapons systems and is accurate in his descriptions and nomenclature.
My only criticism is that the climax seems a little hurried, like the author wants to finish this book quickly and move on to the next. Nonetheless, most of the plot points resolve, with just enough left hanging to keep the forward momentum. Good fun.

CIS operative Carrie O'Connor is in Pakistan on an assignment when she and her partner are ambushed. After getting information of a traitor, Carrie also finds information she has been searching for years for...who killed her father who was also an agent on a mission years ago. Once she has taken care of these situations she must convince her former partner, Justin Hall, who has gone rogue, to return home and face the consequences for his actions.

Codename: Makarov

Carrie O'Connor works for Canada's clandestine services. She's a hardened operator, one of the best. She senses there is a traitor on her team. She fully intends to find who it is. Also, s h e intends to settle a score in Russia. The killer of her father. This is an excellent read bursting with action. I highly recommend!

This was a very interesting read.

Trying not to give the plot is difficult but Carrie is confronted by someone from her father's past and she will stop at absolutely nothing to expose the truth.

The Carrie Chronicles are fast becoming my favorite series of Ethan Jones and can't wait for the next one.

Fast paced

Such a fast paced book, with separate, yet parallel plots converging on one dramatic ending. A stunning book by Ethan Jones. While not totally trusting Russian support, there are a number who believe in the sanxtity of 'an enemy of my enemy is my friend' although in a loose manner.

Terrorists

Jihads, Taliban, ISIS-All being sought by Carrie and her colleagues. With a few traitors thrown in, too. Plus Carrie is looking for the man who killed her father. Very good action!

She's with the Canadian version of the CIA

Carrie O'Connor is an agent with the Canadian equivalent of the CIA. She goes all over the world killing bad guys. And she's good at it. I've read the first two books about her so far. Not bad.

Carrie is out in force again!

This is the second book in the Carrie Chronicles. I first met this character as a partner to the main character in the Justin Hall series. I liked Carrie from the start!

Carrie is a smartly written character, one with a heart, but also a no nonsense, take-no-guff-from-anyone agent -- who also happens to be a woman! I enjoyed this story and that Carrie can finally put some pain behind her. She runs her ops now, and it's fun to read how she kicks butt.

Carrie O’Connor is back again, this time in Pakistan. As her luck would have it, the secret meeting is ambushed. The more they look into the ambush, it seems there is a traitor among them. In addition, rumor has it Justin, who has gone rogue, is in the area.

Continuing on with the mission and trying to determine who is the traitor, Carrie learns a bit more about Justin’s whereabouts, as well as some possible information about her father, who disappeared when she was young.

What can continue with the Taliban leaders when the meeting went wrong? Can Carrier find Justin and bring him home? What does she learn, if anything, about her father? If you have read any of the Justin Hall series, you will see the relationship between Carrie and Justin. If not, he just seems a character from her past.

Loaded with action and espionage, another great spy thriller from Ethan Jones. A mix of old characters and new ones. Another suspense thriller that will keep you turning pages.

One of the things you can count on with this author’s books is that you get drawn into the story very quickly and it’s hard to put the book down. I love reading a female character that kicks butt but still has a soft side and Carrie does not disappoint. Codename: Makarov is definitely an action-packed read with enough suspense to keep you intrigued. I enjoyed this book and look forward to Carrie’s next adventure.

I still think ist is to much shooting and killing for CIS, but I could be wrong. Still it is a bit over due and why would somebody sell out the agents and be in the same car in the ambush ...... makes no sense, he could be killed too.
Soo, some flaws in the story, lot of action, but some things should be thought through again ...........
