Easy to read history of China from 1839 (Opium Wars) until the Communist victory in 1949. Parts of it are difficult to follow due to unfamiliarity with Chinese cities, provinces & regions. But the few maps helped. Heavily illustrated.
Was previously unaware of the volatility of Chinese history. Simply amazing what they have endured; oppression, repression, conquest, massacres, famine & floods. Often due to political power struggles and leaders willing to sacrifice the masses for political advantage.
Describes the decline & fall of the Chinese Empire, the subsequent Republic and its struggle for stability & recognition. It’s fracturing and devolution into region Warlords competing for power, and finally the establishment of the Nationalist and Communist movements and their completion & conflict.
Highly recommended!
